The concept of bordism between branched coverings is a generalization of the concept of regular homotopy between such maps as given in [3].The main result of this article states that for n=2,3 any two branched coverings of the n-sphere with a finite and equal number of sheets are bordant.

1H, 13C and 15N NMR spectral analysis of substituted 1,2,3,4‐tetrahydro‐pyrido[1,2‐a]pyrimidines

The NMR spectroscopic data of a series of thirty‐four 3‐acylpyrido[1,2‐a]pyrimidinium salts are analyzed, which were prepared as either perchlorates or chlorides. Methyl group substituted 3‐aroyltetrahydropyrido[1,2‐a]pyrimidines with the methyl substituent in positions 6, 8 and 9 as well as both in positions 6 and 8 were investigated bearing various aroyl substituents. Unequivocal assignment of all resonances was achieved via two‐dimensional ¹H,¹H‐COSY measurements, ¹H,¹³C and ¹H,¹⁵N HSQC as well as HMBC experiments, and important diagnostic CH and NH couplings in the heteroaromatic ring system are evaluated. The influence of the methyl substituents was analyzed on the proton, carbon and nitrogen shifts. A significant effect of the counter ion on some chemical shifts of the nuclei under discussion of the pyridopyrimidines is found, allowing the indirect detection of the anion, which is confirmed by direct measurement of the ³⁵Cl nucleus of the perchlorates. Characterization and Control of Residual Stress and Curvature in Anodically Bonded Devices and Substrates with Etched Features

While anodic bonding is commonly used in a variety of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications, devices and substrates that incorporate this processing technique are often subjected to significant residual stress and curvature that create post-processing and reliability issues. Here, using an anisothermal anodic bonding procedure, residual stresses and the resulting wafer curvature in these structures are controlled by varying the initial bond temperatures of the silicon and Pyrex wafers independently. Residual stresses are quantified by measuring bulk wafer curvature and, locally, stress concentrations are measured using infrared photoelasticity accompanied by 3-D thermomechanical finite element analysis. Based on the good agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results, this process can be used to determine the bulk post-bond wafer curvature and to reduce the likelihood of structural failure at these sites, by changing the residual stresses from tensile in nature, which may drive initiation and growth of cracks, to compressive, which can suppress such failures.     

The μSR facilities at PSI

TheSR Facility Instruments presently available at PSI and the envisaged medium- and long-term developments are presented. The plans focus on further upgrades of the existing instruments and the development of new techniques using the very high fluxes becoming available at PSI, in particular the setup of a beamline with a fast kicker for muons on request (MORE) and the development of very low energy muon beams.     

The shape invariant of triangles and trigonometry in two-point homogeneous spaces

We define a fourth basic invariant, which, besides the lengths of the three sides of a triangle, determines a triangle in the complex and quaternion projective spaces P ⁿ and P ⁿ (n2) uniquely up to isometry. We give inequalities describing the exact range of the four basic invariants. We express the angular invariants of a triangle with our basic invariants, giving a new completely elementary proof of the laws of trigonometry. As a corollary we derive a large number of congruence theorems. Finally we get, in exactly the same way, the corresponding results for triangles in the complex and quaternion hyperbolic spaces H ⁿ and H ⁿ (n2).     

Asymptotic approximation of functions and their derivatives by Müller’s Gamma operators

We obtain the complete asymptotic expansion of the image functions of Müller’s Gamma operators and of their derivatives. All expansion coefficients are explicitly calculated. Moreover, we study linear combinations of Gamma operators having a better degree of approximation than the operators themselves. Using divided differences we define general classes of linear combinations of which special cases were recently introduced and investigated by other authors.     

Uniform asymptotic regularity for Mann iterates

In Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim. 22 (2001) 641-656, we obtained an effective quantitative analysis of a theorem due to Borwein, Reich, and Shafrir on the asymptotic behavior of general Krasnoselski-Mann iterations for nonexpansive self-mappings of convex sets C in arbitrary normed spaces. We used this result to obtain a new strong uniform version of Ishikawa's theorem for bounded C. In this paper we give a qualitative improvement of our result in the unbounded case and prove the uniformity result for the bounded case under the weaker assumption that C contains a point x whose Krasnoselski-Mann iteration (x_k) is bounded. We also consider more general iterations for which asymptotic regularity is known only for uniformly convex spaces (Groetsch). We give uniform effective bounds for (an extension of) Groetsch's theorem which generalize previous results by Kirk, Martinez-Yanez, and the author.
