We analyzed serum short peptides comprehensively to know whether they were useful to characterize IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Serum samples from 26 patients with untreated IgAN and 25 healthy donors were tested. Short peptides with molecular weights of ~7 kDa, purified from the serum samples by magnetic‐beads‐based weak cation exchange, were detected by mass spectrometry. Then the peptide peaks detected were subjected to the multivariate data analysis by SIMCA‐P+® containing principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial‐least‐squares‐discriminate analysis (OPLS‐DA). A total of 92 peptide peaks were detected in the tested serum samples. The OPLS‐DA analysis revealed that the profile of all the peptide peak intensities discriminated the IgAN group and the healthy group completely with a high R2 value (0.919) and a high Q2 value (0.861). Further, the profile of only five peptide peaks was found to discriminate the two groups. By tandem mass spectrometry and database searching, three of the five peptides which increased in the IgAN group were identified as fragments of fibrinogen alpha chain, and the two peptides which increased in the healthy group were identified as fragments of complement C3f and kininogen‐1 light chain. Taken together, the profile of the serum short peptides would be useful to discriminate IgAN and healthy conditions. The characteristic length of the glass transition temperature was evaluated for crosslinked bulk polystyrenes and poly(methyl methacrylate)s by differential scanning calorimetry. The characteristic length, which corresponds to a length scale of the cooperative rearrangement due to polymer segmental relaxation, was revealed to decrease with increase in the degree of crosslink. The relative values of configurational entropy for crosslinked polymers were evaluated based on a simple polymer network model on a cubic lattice. As a result, the configurational entropy of the smallest cooperatively rearranging region was revealed to decrease with increase in the degree of crosslink, which is responsible for the above behavior of the characteristic length. The effects of crosslink on the characteristic length and the glass transition temperature were found to be stronger for crosslinked poly(methyl methacrylate)s than for crosslinked polystyrenes, which reflects the difference in the structure of crosslink segment. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polymerization of 4‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) with 3,5‐diacetoxybenzoic acid (DABA) was examined to control the morphology of poly(p‐oxybenzoyl) (POB). Polymerizations were carried out at a concentration of 1.0% in an aromatic solvent Therm S‐1000® (mixture of dibenzyltoluene) at 320 °C. Polymerization of ABA yielded the POB fibrillar crystals, but the polymerization with DABA at a concentration in the feed (χf) of 0.10–0.15 afforded novel network structures comprised of spheres connected by fibrillar crystals. The diameter of the spheres prepared at χf of 0.15, which were 0.7 and 5.0 μm, showed bimodality. The network distance, fibril length, and fibril width were 6.1, 2.6, and 0.1 μm, respectively. They possessed high crystallinity. The network structure was formed as follows. Co‐oligomers were first precipitated in the beginning of the polymerization by liquid–liquid phase separation to form the microdroplets. The fibrillar crystals were formed in the coalesced spheres by the crystallization of oligomers induced by the increase of molecular weight. The fibrillar crystals connecting the spheres gradually appeared owing to the shrinkage of the spheres. The fibrillar crystals grew from the surface of the spheres with the crystallization of homo‐oligomers of 4‐oxybenzoyl units, and finally the network structure was completed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Neutron activation analysis of129I and127I in soil has been studied. The limit of detection for129I in soil was about 0.05 mBq/kg or 1×10–9 as129I/127I atom ratio. The range of129I concentration in surface soils collected around Tokaimura (Ibaraki Prefecture) was 0.9–41 mBq/kg.Tracer experiments on the adsorption of iodine were also carried out, in order to obtain information on the behaviour of iodine in soil-water systems. Different adsorption patterns of iodide and iodate on soil were found. It was supposed that iodide was adsorbed by the soil fraction which became unstable at about 200° C and iodate by the fraction which was relatively stable to heating.  相似文献
