Inverse Problem for a Mathematical Model of Adsorption Dynamics

A mixed problem is considered for a system of partial differential equations modeling the process of adsorption dynamics. An existence and uniqueness theorem is proved for this problem, and the solution properties are investigated. The inverse problem is posed, involving the determination of the system coefficient given additional information about the solution. Stress Distribution in an Infinite Elastic Body with a Locally Curved Fiber in a Geometrically Nonlinear Statement

Within the framework of a piecewise homogeneous body model, with the use of three-dimensional geometrically nonlinear exact equations of elasticity theory, a method for determining the stress—strain state in unidirectional fibrous composites with locally curved fibers is developed for the case where the interaction between the fibers is neglected. All the investigations are carried out for an infinite elastic body containing a single locally curved fiber. Numerical results illustrating the effect of geometrical nonlinearity on the distribution of the self-balanced normal and shear stresses acting on the interface and arising as a result of local curving of the fiber are presented.__________Russian translation published in Mekhanika Kompozitnykh Materialov, Vol. 41, No. 4, pp. 433–448, July–August, 2005.     

A Mini-Max Location Problem with Demand Points Arbitrarily Distributed in a Compact Connected Space

Consider a finite set of demand points which exist anywhere on the boundary of a rectangle contained in the two-dimensional Euclidean space. This paper considers the problem of finding an optimal location (on the boundary of the rectangle) which minimizes the maximum average Euclidean distance to the demand points. The method presented is independent of the number of demand points.     

Surface-field induced interband tunneling in InAs

Metal/insulator/semiconductor junctions are prepared on degeneratep-type InAs substrates with hole concentrations ranging from 2.3×10¹⁷ cm^–3 to 2.7×10¹⁸ cm^–3. The low work function of the top metal Yb, Al, or Au and charged interface states influence a two-dimensional (2D) electron inversion layer at the InAs surface. The insulator barrier that is formed by thermal oxidation is designed sufficiently thin, so that the bias voltage applied at the metal electrode mainly drops across the depletion layer separating the electron channel from the bulk. The current-voltage (I–V) characteristics exhibit strong negative differential conductance due to interband, tunneling from the 2D subband into the 3D valence band with peak-to-valley current ratios up to 3.1, 18, and 32 at 300 K, 77 K, and 4.2 K, respectively. In agreement with a theoretical model based on coherentelastic tunneling, the form of the I–V curves resembles those of double-barrier resonant tunnel devices rather than those of 3D Esaki diodes. The series resistance is obtained from the saturation of the differential conductance dI/dV at high forward bias and from the shift of structures in d² I/dV ² arising from phonon assisted tunneling.Dedicated to G. Study of a Microwave Radar Signal Backscattered at Small Incidence Angles: In-Situ Measurements

We present the results of data processing of the field experiment devoted to a study of a microwave signal backscattered by a rough water surface and compare them with the theoretical estimates. The measurements were conducted sequentially using a radar with parabolic and knife-beam antennas. The radar was mounted on the Molitovsky bridge at a height of 40 m across the Oka river in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. For the radar with knife-shaped antenna pattern, we examined the reflected-signal power and the shift and width of the Doppler spectrum as functions of the azimuthal angle for the nadir sounding. For the parabolic antenna, we studied the reflected-signal power as a function of the incidence angle. Leptonic constant of the pseudoscalar <Emphasis Type="Italic">B</Emphasis><Subscript><Emphasis Type="Italic">c</Emphasis></Subscript> meson

We calculate the leptonic constant for the pseudoscalar ground state of the B _c meson in the framework of a QCD-motivated potential model taking into account the two-loop anomalous dimension for the heavy quark current in nonrelativistic QCD as matched with full QCD.     

Approaches to improving critical current density of YBCO superconducting thick films deposited by electrophoresis
