Addition of secondary phosphines to N-vinylpyrroles

Secondary phosphines 1-3 react readily with N-vinylpyrroles 4 and 5 under radical initiation to give regiospecifically anti-Markovnikov adducts, diorganyl-2-(1-pyrrolyl)ethylphosphines 6a-d, highly reactive building blocks for organic synthesis, in 88-91% yields.     

New approach to phosphinoalkynes based on Pd- and Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling of terminal alkynes with chlorophosphanes

[reaction: see text] The first example of direct phosphination of terminal alkynes with chlorophosphanes catalyzed by Ni or Pd complexes is described. Both aromatic and aliphatic terminal acetylenes undergo the coupling reaction to give corresponding coupling product in high yield.     

Stereospecific ion-molecule reactions of anabolic-type steroid tertiary alcohols with proton-donating cations

Isobutane and methane chemical ionization (CI) mass spectra of C-17a-epimeric, 17a-substituted 3-methoxyestra-1,3,5(10),8-tetraen-17a-ols and at C-17-epimeric 17-substituted 3-methoxyestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-17-ols, as well as of some their derivatives, have been studied. In each epimeric pair, the peak intensity ratio [MH-H(2)O](+) / [MH](+) is greater for stereoisomers having an axial (or quasi-axial) hydroxyl group. The same regularity in the peak intensity ratio [MH-CH(3)COOH](+) / [MH](+) is valid for acetates in the D-homo series. The observed quantitative differences in CI mass spectra of epimers are explained by steric hindrance of the attack of the proton-donating cation caused by the angular 18-methyl group. No differences in the ease of elimination of the silanol molecule were observed in CI mass spectra of epimeric silyl ethers.     

Interfacial micellar structures from novel amphiphilic star polymers

An amphiphilic heteroarm star polymer containing 12 alternating hydrophobic/hydrophilic arms of polystyrene (PS) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) connected to a well-defined rigid aromatic core was studied at the air-water and the air-solid interfaces. At the air-water interface, the molecules spontaneously form pancakelike micellar aggregates which measure up to several microns in diameter and 5 nm in thickness. Upon reduction of the surface area per molecule to 7 nm2, the two-dimensional micelles merged into a dense monolayer. We suggest that confined phase separation of dissimilar polymer arms occurred upon their segregation on the opposite sides of the rigid disklike aromatic core, forcing the rigid cores to adopt a face-on orientation with respect to the interface. Upon transfer onto solid supports the PS chains face the air-film interface making it completely hydrophobic, and the PAA chains were found to collapse and form a thin flattened underlayer. This study points toward new strategies to create large 2D microstructures with facial amphiphilicity and suggests a profound influence of star molecular architecture on the self-assembly of amphiphiles at the air-water interface.     

Cyclo- and carbomagnesiation of 1,2-dienes catalyzed by Zr complexes

Cyclo- and carbomagnesiation of 1,2-dienes with EtMgR′ (R′=Et, Br) in the presence of Cp₂ZrCl₂ catalyst lead to alkylidenemagnesiocyclopentanes. Deuterolysis provides insights into the reaction pathways.     

Development and prevalidation of a method for phenol determination by solid-phase spectrophotometry

A simple, sensitive and rapid solid-phase spectrophotometric procedure was developed for the determination of traces of phenol with 4-aminoantipyrine as a reagent (AAP-SPS), and the optimal experimental conditions were established. This method was performed by sorption and direct absorbance measurements of the product phenol-AAP sorbed on the anion-exchanger Dowex 1-X4 (0.2 g) at 495 nm (absorption maximum) and 700 nm (non-absorption wavelength). The sensitivity offered by the AAP-SPS procedure was higher by a factor of 40 compared with the respective conventional spectrophotometric method. Metrological characteristics were established using a prevalidation strategy. The AAP-SPS procedure is characterized by a linear calibration function in the working range of 0.05–0.50 μmol, low standard deviation of procedure (±0.012), low limit of determination (0.021 μmol), and favorable random (±0.85 to ±11.27%) and systematic deviations (−4.55 to +11.50%). Moreover, the accuracy of the system investigated by the recovery test is acceptable (99–102%). Favorable working and performance characteristics make the new SPS method ideal for phenol monitoring in pharmaceutical preparations as well as other matrices.     

Acceleration of the Passerini reaction in the presence of nucleophilic additives

An accelerating effect of nucleophilic additives was revealed for the Passerini multi-component reaction. The influence of aqueous solutions on the reaction rate was studied in detail and the direct involvement of water in the bond-making step was attributed as the basis of an accelerating effect. Other nucleophiles were tested as alternatives to water; as a result N-hydroxysuccinimide is proposed as an accelerant of the Passerini reaction.     

Structure of the 18-Crown-6 Complex with Ammonium Hexafluorosilicate and Water

The crystalline host–guest type complex [(18-crown-6NH₄)₂][SiF₆]4H₂Ohas been obtained as the result of the interaction of SiF₄2NH₃ with 18-crown-6 (18C6) in an aqueous medium. Crystal data: monoclinic, space groupC 2 c, a=26.541(2), b=8.363(2), c=20.469(2) Å, = 122.43(1)°and Z=4. The final R-value is 0.070 for 3253 reflections with I 2(I).The crystals consist of the complex [NH₄18C6]⁺ cations, [SiF₆]^2-anions and water molecules. The ammonium cation is hydrogen bonded by three of its H-atoms to the crown ether oxygen atoms with N(1) O separations2.923(5)–2.940(5) Å and by the fourth H-atom to the fluorine atom of thehexafluorosilicate anion, the N(1)F(4) distance being 2.797(6) Å.The conformation of the macrocycle and the hydrogen-bond geometry in thecomplex cation closely resemble those in related adducts between 18-crown-6and ammonium salts. All crystal components are connected via a system of hydrogen bonds into a ribbon along the b axis in the unit cell.     

Stereospecific fragmentations in the mass spectra of stereoisomeric isoindoloquinazolines

The mass spectrometric behavior of stereo- and regioisomeric, partially saturated isoindoloquinazolines was studied by positive-ion electron ionization (EI) and fast-atom bombardment (FAB/LSIMS) mass spectrometry combined with collision-induced dissociation (CID). A highly stereospecific retro-Diels-Alder process was observed in the cyclohexene-fused isomers under the EI conditions, and a corresponding (although less specific) fragmentation was observed in their FAB spectra. In the absence of RDA fragmentations, regio- and stereoisomers of the cyclohexane-fused heterocycles could be distinguished based on their FAB/CID spectra.
