Asymmetric synthesis of phosphonic acid analogues for acylcarnitine

Phosphonic acid analogues of acylcarnitine were prepared in an optically active form expecting CPT I inhibitory activities. The synthetic methodology was based on catalytic asymmetric dihydroxylation of β,γ-unsaturated phosphonates and subsequent regioselective amination via the cyclic sulfates.     

Preparation, structure and properties of novel 1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene derivatives containing bis(ethynylpyridine) units

1,3-Dithiol-2-ylidene derivatives containing bis(ethynylpyridine) units were synthesized using a Pd-catalyzed reaction of the corresponding dibromide. X-Ray crystal analysis revealed unique crystal structures depending on the aromatic groups. The absorption spectra and redox properties indicated intramolecular charge-transfer interactions between the 1,3-dithiole unit and the pyridyl parts.     

Optical Glucose Monitoring Based on Femtosecond Two-Color Pulse Interferometry

We demonstrate the potential of femtosecond two-color pulse interferometry for in vitro optical glucose monitoring, by dispersion of the group refractive index in a glucose solution sample with respect to a red-color light and a blue-color light. By comparison with femtosecond one-color pulse interferometry, the basic performance of the present system with regard to sensitivity, quantitativeness, and tolerance to surrounding disturbances, is evaluated. The resulting accuracy and precision of glucose determination are 77 and 118mg/dl for 10-mm-sample-thickness, respectively. This near-common-path configuration of the two-color pulse light provides good stability to fluctuations of sample temperature, which is important in clinical applications. Considering the performance of femtosecond two-color pulse interferometry as an optical glucose sensor, a suitable measurement site for in vivo optical glucose monitoring is discussed.     

PHOTORECEPTOR CELL TYPES IN THE RETINA OF VARIOUS VERTEBRATE SPECIES: IMMUNOCYTOCHEMISTRY WITH ANTIBODIES AGAINST RHODOPSIN AND IODOPSIN

Types of photoreceptor cells in the retinas of 36 species of vertebrates (5 classes, 14 orders) were investigated immunocytochemically with monoclonal antibodies against chicken iodopsin (Io-mAb) and antiserum against bovine rhodopsin (Rh-As). In mammals, Rh-As labeled the outer segments of some photoreceptor cells in striped squirrels (a diurnal mammal) and those of most photoreceptor cells in mice (a nocturnal mammal), while Io-mAb labeled any photoreceptor cells in either of them. In all species of birds studied, Io-mAb labeled the principal and accessory members of double cones and single cones with a red oil droplet. Rh-As labeled single cones with a yellow or clear oil droplet in addition to rods. In turtles, both Rh-As and Io-mAb labeled single cones with a red or clear oil droplet and the principal (with a yellow oil droplet) and accessory members of double cones. This suggests that the visual pigments in these cones of turtles have common epitopes with bovine rhodopsin and chicken iodopsin. In Japanese grass lizards, single cones with a yellow oil droplet and double cones were immunoreactive to both Rh-As and Io-mAb. In snakes, rods and cones could not be distinguished but both positively and negatively stained cells were observed by the use of each antibody. In geckos, however, all photoreceptor cells were immunonegative to Io-mAb. In all species studied in amphibians, Rh-As labeled rods but not cones. Neither rods nor cones reacted with Io-mAb. In fishes, almost all species studied had well developed cones, and some of these cones were labeled by Rh-As. However, Io-mAb labeled the outer segments of some cones only in loaches. Rh-As labeled photoreceptor cells in all species of fishes studied. Thus, Rh-As recognized the outer segments of rods in all species studied from fishes to mammals, whereas the epitope recognized by Io-mAb is conserved in some species of fishes, most species of reptiles and all species of birds studied.     

Polymorphy in the stereostructure of periodic polymer backbones

We theoretically investigated the polymorphy of the stereostructures of a periodic polymer. Using the polymer's internal conformation parameters of bond lengths, bond angles, and internal rotation angles, we extended the mathematical treatment for designing polymer backbones. We considered those periodic polymers whose unit cell consists of one (m = 1), two (m = 2), or three (m = 3) kinds of atoms. Moreover, for these three types of polymers, we supposed two catenation types for the skeleton atoms; one is a “homorotatory” sequence and the other is a “heterorotatory” one. To specify the backbone's stereostructure, we introduced several conformation parameters such as the helical pitch number n, the translation distance d, and the inclination angle of the skeleton plane Θ. By combining these parameters, we can systematically understand the variety and the possible polymorphy in the stereostructure of a periodic polymer backbone. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diastereoselective synthesis of new psi[(E)-CH=CMe]- and psi[(Z)-CH=CMe]-type alkene dipeptide isosteres by organocopper reagents and application to conformationally restricted cyclic RGD peptidomimetics

Diastereoselective synthesis of new psi[(E)-CH=CMe]- and psi[(Z)-CH=CMe]-type alkene dipeptide isosteres corresponding to dipeptides having one N-methylamino acid, and application to bioactive peptides, are described. In a key reaction introducing the chiral alpha-alkyl group of the isosteres, organocopper-mediated alkylation of syn-beta-methylated gamma-mesyloxy-alpha,beta-enoate 26a afforded E- and Z-isomers of anti-S(N)2' products in a solvent-dependent manner. The resulting two isosteres, D-Phe-psi[(E)-CH=CMe]-L-Val 27a and D-Phe-psi[(Z)-CH=CMe]-L-Val 28b, which corresponded to trans- and cis-conformers of D-Phe-L-MeVal, respectively, were utilized in a structure-activity relationship study on cyclic RGD peptides 1 and 2, in company with a psi[(E)-CH=CH]-type alkene dipeptide isostere, D-Phe-psi[(E)-CH=CH]-L-Val. The cyclic isostere-containing pseudopeptides 3, 4, and 40 were synthesized and biological activity against integrin alpha(V)beta(3) and alpha(IIb)beta(3) receptors were also evaluated.     

Senecicannabine,a new pyrrolizidine alkaloid from senecio cannabifolius

The structure of senecicannabine($\text{1}$), a new mcrocyclic pyrrolizidine alkaloid isolated from $\text{Senecio cannabifolius}$, has been established by chemical study and X-ray analysis.     

Growth Mechanism of Large Monodispersed Silica Particles Prepared from Tetraethoxysilane in the Presence of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate

Monodispersed silica particles up to ca. 1.2 μm in diameter were prepared by hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The particle size was increased with an increase of SDS added. The geometrical standard deviation of the particles was decreased with an increase of SDS. In the earlier reaction stage, double spherical particles by the coalescence of the particles were frequently observed when large amounts of SDS were added. Particle size was gradually increased after the coalescence occurred and spherical particles were finally obtained. The results of Nielsen’s chronomal analysis suggest that the polynuclear layer growth took place after the coalescence of the particles in the presence of larger amount of SDS.
