Reversible photoswitching in a cell-sized vesicle

A photosensitive amphiphilic molecule can switch the shape of an assembled vesicle as determined by microscopic observation. Photoisomerization induces a change in membrane fluctuation behavior or a morphological transition between ellipsoid and bud shapes, depending on the asymmetrical degree of the initial shape. The mechanism of this reversible photoswitching in the vesicle morphology is interpreted in terms of a change in the effective cross-sectional area of the photosensitive molecule.     

Preparation of Silica-Gel Film with pH Indicators by the Sol–Gel Method

Gel films with various pH indicators were prepared by the sol–gel method without catalysts. The obtained gel films showed good response for various pH solutions as optical pH sensors and no leaching of the indicators was observed. The feature of absorption spectra of the indicators in the gel films was almost the same as that in the aqueous solutions. pKa of the indicators in the gel films was shifted with the increase of the TMOS content in the starting solutions. These results suggest that the pH indicators in the gel films were trapped in similar environment as in the solutions.     

Inductive effect-assisted chain-growth polycondensation. synthetic development from para- to meta-substituted aromatic polyamides with low polydispersities

The polycondensation of m-(octylamino)benzoic acid esters (1) with base was investigated in order to extend the synthesis of well-defined condensation polymers from para-substituted polymers to meta-substituted ones. We expected that the aminyl anion of 2 would deactivate the ester moiety at the meta position of 2 owing to the strong inductive effect of the anion, resulting in, not self-polycondensation, but chain-growth polycondensation. The methyl ester monomer 1a polymerized with lithium hexamethyldisilazide (LiHMDS) in the presence of phenyl benzoate (3a) as an initiator at 0 degrees C to afford a polymer with a low polydispersity, but the product contained a small amount of self-condensation polymer. On the other hand, the polymerization of the ethyl ester monomer (1b) with phenyl 4-methylbenzoate (3b) proceeded through chain polymerization without self-polycondensation. The Mn values of the polymers increased linearly in proportion to the [1b]0/[3b]0 ratio, and the Mw/Mn ratios remained narrow over the entire [1b]0/[3b]0 range. Furthermore, a block copolymer of N-alkylated poly(m-benzamide) and poly(p-benzamide) with a low polydispersity was synthesized by the monomer addition method under this polymerization condition.     

Hydrolysable tannins having enantiomeric dehydrohexahydroxydiphenoyl group: Revised structure of terchebin and structure of granatin B

Revised structure of terchebin is shown by II-B. Granatin B, a new ellagitannin, has structure V in which partial structure Ic?Id is enantiomeric to Ia?Ib in II-B and geraniin.     

Near-infrared subpicosecond pulse generation in a synchronously mode-locked cw dye laser

Tunable subpicosecond pulses have been obtained from a synchronously mode-locked Oxazine-1 dye laser by tandem pumping with output pulses of a mode-locked Rhodamine 6G dye laser. The effects of cavity detuning on the pulse-width and the second harmonic power (the peak intensity of the autocorrelation trace) have been investigated. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with those predicted by a recent model analysis.     

Angle-resolved photoemission spectra of 2H-NbSe2

Angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been made on the metallic layer compound 2H-NbSe₂. From the results, E vs k_∥ dispersion curves have been obtained along two principal symmetry directions in the Brillouin zone. The experimental energy bands are found to be in good agreement with the results predicted by one-dimensional density of initial states along k_⊥.     

Theoretical prediction of maxima in association constants for complex formation between flavin mononucleotide and indoleacetate in the presence of polyelectrolytes

The effects of ionene polymers (6,3-ionene, 6,6-ionene, 6,8-ionene, and 6,12-ionene) with various charge densities upon association constants K for the complexation between flavin mononucleotide and indoleacetate have been studied. Except for 6,12-ionene, K increases with increasing polymer concentration then passes through a maximum, and declines at high polymer concentrations. The value of the maximum K increases in the order 6,8-ionene > 6,3-ionene > 6,6-ionene. In contrast, 6,12-ionene gives only a monotone increasing curve with increasing polymer concentration. These curves are analyzed using the theory of the partition coefficient proposed in the previous paper. The types of the curves that the theory predicts are classified in greater detail than in the previous paper, and examples are given. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
