Formation of Superhydrophobic Alumina Coating Films with High Transparency on Polymer Substrates by the Sol-Gel Method

Transparent, superhydrophobic coating films have been prepared on polymer substrates at low temperatures through the sol-gel method. Al₂O₃ gel films were prepared on poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrates from Al(O-sec-C₄H₉)₃ chemically modified with ethyl acetoacetate. A small roughness of about 20–50 nm was found to form on the surface of the Al₂O₃ gel films dried at room temperature and then immersed in hot water at 60°C. The electron diffraction measurements have shown that this roughened surface consists of pseudoboehmite nanocrystals. The coating of hydrolyzed fluoroalkyltrimethoxysilane on the Al₂O₃ gel films with the small roughness produced transparent, superhydrophobic films with contact angle for water larger than 150°.     

A Simple Frequency Lock of Green YAG Laser to Dispersion Line of the Linear Absorption Spectrum of Iodine Molecules Utilizing an Acousto-Optic Frequency Shifter

Frequency of a 532 nm emission line of a diode-laser-pumped Nd:YAG laser is stabilized by lock of the output line to the linear absorption line of iodine molecules. The stabilization method is very simple utilizing the frequency shift caused with an acousto-optic modulator. The laser frequency was stabilized at the zero-crossing point of the second-derivative of the dispersion curve. Instability obtained by the error signal is affected by the phase-characteristics of detectors, which results in 3^*10^-8.     

Finding of Optimal Calcium Ion Probes for Fluorescence Lifetime Measurement

We have investigated the fluorescence lifetime properties of 8 calcium ion probes, calcium-green-1, calcium green-2, calcium green-5N, calcium orange, oregon green 488 BAPTA-6F, fluo-3, fluo-4, and fluo-5N. We found that the decay time of calcium green-5N varied more sensitively with calcium concentration than calcium green-1 which was known to be a highly sensitive probe. We have also found that the center of observable range of calcium concentration by fluorescence lifetime measurement is lower than that by fluorescence intensity measurement.     

Fabrication of a Near-Field Optical Fiber Probe with a Nanometric Metallized Protrusion

We have developed a novel probe with a nanometric metallized protrusion extending through a subwavelength aperture to increase optical near-field excitation and collection efficiencies. The apex diameter of the fabricated metallized protrusion was 35 nm. The Intensity distribution of the optical near-field at the apex of the probe was measured by scanning another probe across the apex, and it was observed that strong optical near-field was generated at the apex of the metallized protrusion. The width of the intensity distribution was 150 nm including instrumental resolution. Probes with spherical and ellipsoidal metallized protrusion were also fabricated, by which enhancement of the optical near-field is expected due to localized plasmon excitation.     

Facile assay of telomerase activity utilizing a DNA-detectable chemiluminogenic reagent.

Telomerase shows increased activity in most human cancers and germ line cells, but not in normal human somatic cells. We describe a novel chemiluminescence method for the facile assay of telomerase activity in human cells. The telomerase substrate was incubated with the cell lysate containing various amounts of telomerase, and then the telomerase product was amplified by the polymerase-chained reaction (PCR). The PCR products were separated from the excess substrate, primer and deoxyribonucleotide triphosphates by a centrifugal filter, which distinguished different molecular sizes. The isolated products were reacted with a DNA-detectable chemiluminogenic reagent, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenylglyoxal. The proposed assay method gave linearity for the telomerase activity in 100 to 10000 cells (r2=0.997), and allowed the assay not only of lower activity, but also of higher activity of telomerase without the requirement of any special labeled-PCR primers in the assay system.     

The oldest mid-oceanic carbonate buildup complex: Setting and lithofacies of the Vendian (Late Neoproterozoic) Baratal limestone in the Gorny Altai Mountains,Siberia

The Baratal limestone in the Gorny Altai Mountains, southern Siberia, occurs as large allochthonous blocks within a Cambrian accretionary complex that developed around the Siberia craton. Before the final accretion to Siberia in the Cambrian, the terrigenous clastic-free Baratal limestone was deposited directly upon a basaltic basement with a geochemical signature identical to that of modern oceanic plateau. The Baratal limestone with 598 ± 25 Ma (Early Vendian) Pb-Pb isochron age consists of three distinct facies; 1) massive lime mudstone with ooids and stromatolites, 2) bedded lime mudstone, and 3) limestone conglomerate/breccia dominated by ooid-bearing lime mudstone clasts. The first represents a shallow marine environment on top of an ancient oceanic plateau, while the latter two represent the deeper slope to bottom-of-slope facies of a plateau. The Vendian Baratal limestone provides the oldest example of a reconstructed shallow marine carbonate buildup complex developed on a plateau/seamount in a mid-ocean.

Determination of peptide φ angles in solids by relayed anisotropy correlation NMR

A solid state NMR method is presented for determination of a backbone dihedral angle φ in peptides, being based on the previously reported method, relayed anisotropy correlation (RACO) NMR [Y. Ishii et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. 256 (1996) 133]. In the present method, the and the dipolar tensors in the system are two-dimensionally (2D) correlated via polarization transfer from to under magic angle spinning (MAS). This method was applied to N-acetyl , -valine, and the H–C–N–H dihedral angle was determined to be 154.0±1.4° or 206.0±1.4°, the former agreeing with the X-ray value of 154±5°.
