Mild solution synthesis of plate-like and rod-like ZnO crystals

Micro-disks and micro-rods of ZnO were successfully synthesized by a mild solution process using zinc chloride as starting material. The morphology of the ZnO crystals changed substantially, depending on the concentrations of the Zn²⁺ ion and organic additives in the solution. A plate-like Zn₅(OH)₈Cl₂·H₂O precursor with a layered structure could be produced in solutions with high concentrations of chloride ions. The thermal stability, including phase composition and morphology, of the as-prepared Zn₅(OH)₈Cl₂·H₂O in air and water was investigated.     

Selective photoinduced energy transfer from a thiophene rotaxane to acceptor

An energy transfer process was investigated using cyclodextrin-oligothiophene rotaxanes (2T-[2]rotaxane). The excited energy of 2T-[2]rotaxane is transferred to the sexithiophene derivative which is included in the cavity of β-CD stoppers of 2T-[2]rotaxane.     

Alkynylation of benzotriazole with silylethynyliodonium triflates. Regioselective synthesis of 2-ethynyl-2H-benzotriazole derivatives

Phenyl(trimethylsilylethynyl)iodonium and tert-butyldimethylsilylethynyl(phenyl)iodonium triflates were applied to alkynylation of benzotriazole. Treatment of the silylethynyliodonium triflates with the potassium salt of benzotriazole ion in (t)BuOH and CH(2)Cl(2) gave 2-(trimethylsilylethynyl)-2H-1,2,3-benzotriazole and 2-(tert-butyldimethylsilylethynyl)-2H-1,2,3-benzotriazole in 74% and 76% yields, respectively. The regioisomers, 1-silylethynyl-1H-1,2,3-benzotriazole derivatives, were minor. In both cases of the silyl-substitued ethynyliodonium salts, novel regioselective alkynylation of benzotriazole at the 2 position was observed.     

Stereospecific synthesis and redox properties of ruthenium(II) carbonyl complexes bearing a redox-active 1,8-naphthyridine unit

Two stereoisomers of cis-[Ru(bpy)(pynp)(CO)Cl]PF₆ (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, pynp = 2-(2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine) were selectively prepared. The pyridyl rings of the pynp ligand in [Ru(bpy)(pynp)(CO)Cl]⁺ are situated trans and cis, respectively, to the CO ligand. The corresponding CH₃CN complex ([Ru(bpy)(pynp)(CO)(CH₃CN)]²⁺) was also prepared by replacement reactions of the chlorido ligand in CH₃CN. Using these complexes, ligand-centered redox behavior was studied by electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques. The molecular structures of pynp-containing complexes (two stereoisomers of [Ru(bpy)(pynp)(CO)Cl]PF₆ and [Ru(pynp)₂(CO)Cl]PF₆) were determined by X-ray structure analyses.     

Discovery of an excellent IR absorbent with a broad working waveband: Cs(x)WO3 nanorods

Cs(0.32)WO(3) nanorods, synthesized by a designed water controlled-release process, exhibited strong absorption of light in a wide waveband of 800-15,000 nm, quick conversion of photo-energy to local heat and excellent heat rays cutoff character.     

Synthesis and antimicrobial evaluation of some heterocyclic chalcone derivatives

Some new heterocyclic compounds containing isoxazole, pyrazole and oxadiazole ring systems were prepared from various chalcones. The synthesized compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis and spectral methods. These compounds were screened for their antimicrobial activities.     

First-Principles Calculation of Lattice Dynamics of bcc and hcp Iron Under High Pressures

Lattice dynamics and electron-phonon coupling are calculated for non-magnetic hcp iron at 100 GPa by a first-principles linear response full-potential LMTO method. Superconducting transition temperature is estimated to be less than 0.5 K. For ferromagnetic bcc iron lattice dynamical calculations are performed for 9.8 GPa as well as for ambient pressure. The results of calculation reproduce well the pressure dependence of phonon dispersion curves observed by neutron scattering measurements.     

Application of metalloporphyrins and methylviologen-pendent iron porphyrin to reduction of diphenylsulfoxide

In the two-electron reduction of diphenylsulfoxide to diphenylsulfide, which is considered a model reaction of sulfite reduction catalyzed by sulfite reductase, methylviologen-pendent iron(III) porphyrin exhibits much higher catalytic activity than usual iron(III) and manganese(III) tetraphenylporphyrins, while cobalt(II) tetraphenylporphyrin exhibits much less catalytic activity than the others. Discussion about the active species and the reason of the acceleration by methylviologen-pendent is presented.     

Microwave preionization of the tokamak discharge at the electron cyclotron resonance

When ohmic heating power is applied during the microwave discharge at the electron cyclotron resonance, the plasma current and density build-up become fast and the loop voltage required to start the tokamak discharge decreases. The micro-wave burst observed in the initial stage is reduced and the burst of hard X-rays, occurring at the quasi-steady stage of discharge in the case of no microwave injection, disappears, suggesting that the production of run-away electrons is suppressed strongly.
