Boundary slip on smooth hydrophobic surfaces: intrinsic effects and possible artifacts

We report an accurate determination of the hydrodynamic boundary condition of simple liquids flowing on smooth hydrophobic surfaces using a dynamic surface force apparatus equipped with two independent subnanometer resolution sensors. The boundary slip observed is well defined and does not depend on the scale of investigation from one to several hundreds of nanometers, nor on shear rate up to 5 x 10(3)s(-1). The slip length of 20 nm is in good agreement with theory and numerical simulations concerning smooth nonwetting surfaces. These results disagree with previous data in the literature reporting very high boundary slip on similar systems. We discuss possible origins of large slip length on smooth hydrophobic surfaces due to their contamination by hydrophobic particles.

In-silico guided discovery of novel CCR9 antagonists

Antagonism of CCR9 is a promising mechanism for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. There is limited experimental data on CCR9 and its ligands, complicating efforts to identify new small molecule antagonists. We present here results of a successful virtual screening and rational hit-to-lead campaign that led to the discovery and initial optimization of novel CCR9 antagonists. This work uses a novel data fusion strategy to integrate the output of multiple computational tools, such as 2D similarity search, shape similarity, pharmacophore searching, and molecular docking, as well as the identification and incorporation of privileged chemokine fragments. The application of various ranking strategies, which combined consensus and parallel selection methods to achieve a balance of enrichment and novelty, resulted in 198 virtual screening hits in total, with an overall hit rate of 18%. Several hits were developed into early leads through targeted synthesis and purchase of analogs.     

Reversible Diels-Alder addition to fullerenes: a study of equilibria using (3)He NMR spectroscopy.

3He NMR spectroscopy has been used to study the equilibria of Diels-Alder additions of 9,10-dimethyl anthracene (DMA) to (3)He@C(60) and (3)He@C(70). Spectra of a series of equilibrium mixtures showed peaks for the isomeric adducts. One monoadduct, six bis-adducts, eleven tris-adducts, and ten tetrakis-adducts of DMA to C(60) were seen. One monoadduct and three bis-adducts of C(70) were detected. Equilibrium constants were found for these reactions and values for DeltaG, DeltaH, and DeltaS were obtained.
