Charging megadalton poly(ethylene oxide)s by electrospray ionization. A charge detection mass spectrometry study

Ions from compounds of megadalton (MDa) molecular weight were produced in an electrospray ionization source from solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) samples with average molecular weights ranging from 1,000,000 to 7,000,000 Da. Charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS) has been used to determine the mass of the MDa PEOs. Simultaneous measurement of the charge and velocity of individual ions allows the mass determination of the ion, after calibration of the instrument with independent samples. In addition to the mass spectra, CDMS generates charge-versus-mass plots, which allow investigation of the charging of electrosprayed ions over a broad range of masses. The experimental charging capacity of MDa PEOs is compared with a simple model based on the affinity of alkali cations for oxygen sites and on the electrostatic potential energy of the charged polymer. The charging capacity of PEOs was also investigated as a function of the concentration of and the type of alkali ions.     

Tropylium ion mediated α-cyanation of amines

Tropylium ion mediated α-cyanation of amines is described. Even in the presence of KCN, tropylium ion is capable of oxidizing various amine substrates, and the resulting iminium ions undergo salt metathesis with cyanide ion to produce aminonitriles. The byproducts of this transformation are simply cycloheptatriene, a volatile hydrocarbon, and water-soluble potassium tetrafluoroborate. Thirteen total substrates are shown for the α-cyanation procedure, including a gram scale synthesis of 17β-cyanosparteine. In addition, a tropylium ion mediated oxidative aza-Cope rearrangement is demonstrated.     

Silver metallation of hen egg white lysozyme: X-ray crystal structure and NMR studies

The X-ray crystal structure, NMR binding studies, and enzyme activity of silver(I) metallated hen egg white lysozyme are presented. Primary bonding of silver is observed through His15 with secondary bonding interactions coming from nearby Arg14 and Asp87. A covalently bound nitrate completes a four coordinate binding pocket.     

First efficient uncharged reactivators for the dephosphylation of poisoned human acetylcholinesterase

Nerve agents are highly toxic organophosphorus compounds with strong inhibition potency against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Herein, we describe two first extremely promising uncharged reactivators for poisoned human AChE with a superior or similar in vitro ability to reactivate the enzyme as compared to that of HI-6, obidoxime, TMB-4 and HL?-7.     

Synergistic effects of encapsulated phthalocyanine complexes in MIL-101 for the selective aerobic oxidation of tetralin

Metal phthalocyanine complexes encapsulated in MIL-101, and used as "ship-in-a-bottle" catalysts, show outstanding TONs in the aerobic oxidation of tetralin.     

A Lie symmetry analysis and explicit solutions of the two‐dimensional ∞‐Polylaplacian

In this work, we consider the Lie point symmetry analysis of a strongly nonlinear partial differential equation of third order, the ∞‐Polylaplacian, in two spatial dimensions. This equation is a higher order generalization of the ∞‐Laplacian, also known as Aronsson's equation, and arises as the analog of the Euler–Lagrange equations of a second‐order variational principle in L^∞. We obtain its full symmetry group, one‐dimensional Lie subalgebras and the corresponding symmetry reductions to ordinary differential equations. Finally, we use the Lie symmetries to construct new invariant ∞‐Polyharmonic functions.
