A proof of the homotopy push-out and pull-back lemma

The homotopy push-out and pull-back lemma of Iwase (1998) is a generalized version of Theorem 1.1 of Ganea (1965) and the Theorem of Rutter (1971) whose proofs were given under the simply-connectivity condition. The purpose of this paper is to give a proof in the general case.

     

Orientational relationship among main and side chains of a polyimide alignment layer, liquid crystals monolayer and bulk pretilt angle

We have determined the orientational distribution of cyano-substituted side chains of a rubbed polyimide film, and a liquid crystal monolayer adsorbed on the film, by means of optical second harmonic generation. With the orientational distribution of a main chain that was measured in a previous study by means of near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, we have obtained the correlation of all the orientational distributions contributing to the alignment of LC molecules, i.e. pretilt angle. We find that the side chain plays a role in increasing the pretilt angle, but in the case of rubbing strength dependence, the main chain has stronger correlation with the pretilt angle than has the side chain.     

Modeling of filament discharge development in a XeCl excimer laser

Dynamics of a filament discharge in a discharge-excited XeCl excimer laser medium has been simulated for a sequence of discharge pulses (shots). In the present model a filament discharge is triggered at a microprotrusion on a cathode surface. After the first discharge initiation, a hot spot is created near the cathode, then filament develops toward the anode in the second shot. Images of the filament discharge development and its properties in a XeCl excimer laser are presented     

Effective 2,6-substitution of piperidine nitroxyl radical by carbonyl compound

Nitroxyl radicals (nitroxides) with unpaired electron are widely used as antioxidants, contrast agents, and spin probes. Although piperidine nitroxyl radicals have many applications, these are mainly tetramethylpiperidine compounds, and only a few reports consider the substitution of N-O surround as a reaction site, such as 2,2,6,6-tetrasubstituted piperidine nitroxyl radicals. Our results revealed that the 2,6-position of the 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-4-one compound was substituted by cyclohexyl groups to produce 2,2,6,6-tetrasubstituted piperidin-4-one derivatives under mild reaction conditions. An interesting result was obtained by using ¹⁵N-labeled NH₄Cl instead of ¹⁴NH₄Cl: it gave ¹⁵N-labeled 2,2,6,6-tetrasubstituted piperidin-4-one-1-oxyls with a high ¹⁵N content. In conclusion, the new method for the synthesis of nitroxyl radicals readily yields 2,2,6,6-tetrasubstituted piperidin-4-one under mild conditions.     

Wavelength-tunable excited-state absorption and optical limiting effects in the Q band region based on silicon phthalocyanine oligomers

Optical limiting effects of silicon phthalocyanine (SiPc) oligomers have been examined in the Q band region in order to demonstrate a novel concept for controlling the wavelength of optical limiting effects.     

Characterization of Ultra‐Thin Temperature‐Responsive Polymer Layer and Its Polymer Thickness Dependency on Cell Attachment/Detachment Properties

Ultra thin poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) modified glass coverslips (PIAPAm‐CS) using electron beam irradiation exhibited a clear relationship between the polymer thickness and thermal cell adhesion/detachment behavior. The polymer thickness dependency and the characteristic of ultra thin PIPAAm layer, has been illustrated in terms of the molecular motion of the modified PIPAAm chains. PIPAAm‐CSs surfaces with various area‐polymer densities and thicknesses were characterized by AFM and protein adsorption assay. The newly obtained results gave a further insight into the illustration. Finally, the future application of intelligent surfaces was discussed for fabricating tissue and organ.

     

A new biisoflavonoid from the roots of Erythrina variegata

A new biisoflavonoid, biseryvarin A (1a), together with two known compounds were isolated from the roots of Erythrina variegata. The structure of biseryvarin A was established on the basis of spectroscopic evidence. Biseryvarin A is the first dimeric isoflavonoid possessing isoprenoid groups from the genus Erythrina. Biseryvarin A showed low activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).     

Experimental observation of rotational Doppler broadening in a molecular system

The first experimental evidence of rotational Doppler broadening in photoelectron spectra, reported here, show good agreement with recently described theoretical predictions. The dependence of the broadening on temperature and photoelectron kinetic energy is quantitatively predicted by the theory. The experiments verify that the rotational contributions to the linewidth are comparable to those from translational Doppler broadening and must be considered in the analysis of high-resolution photoelectron spectra. A classical model accounting for this newly observed effect is presented.
