This article covers the author's transition from small molecule organic synthesis into polymeric materials and nanotechnology which led to receipt of the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award in 2007. This includes his start in organometallic reaction development, synthesis of precisely controlled oligomers, conjugated polymers, planar conjugated polymers, and his work on fullerenes. Also mentioned are the people of influence in his life during that formative period. The meaning of nanotechnology is explained in light of bottom-up vs top-down construction and then more specifically related to the passive, active, and hybrid sides of nanotechnology research. These three areas are explained using examples from the author's laboratory: from the passive side, functionalization of carbon nanotubes and their use in composites; from the active side, molecular electronics and nanocars; and finally, the hybrid side, complementing silicon with molecules.  相似文献

Graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONRs) are wide bandgap semiconductors that can be reduced to metallic graphene nanoribbons. The transformation of GONRs from their semiconductive to the metallic state by annealing has attracted significant interest due to its simplicity. However, the detailed process by which GONRs transform from wide-bandgap semiconductors to semimetals with a near zero bandgap is unclear. As a result, precise control of the bandgap between these two states is not currently achievable. Here, we quantitatively examine the removal of oxygen-containing groups and changes in the bandgap during thermal annealing of GONRs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show the progressive removal of oxygen-containing functional groups. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that initially small graphene regions in GONRs become large stacked graphitic layers during thermal annealing. These structural and chemical changes are correlated with progressive changes in the electrochemical bandgap, monitored by cyclic voltammetry. These results show that small changes in the thermal annealing temperature result in significant changes to the bandgap and chemical composition of GONRs and provide a straightforward method for tuning the bandgap in oxidized graphene structures.  相似文献

The first TiCl(4)-mediated condensation of secondary amides with aldehydes and ketones has been achieved. The reaction proceeds at room temperature and is complete within 5 h in most cases. The optimized procedure used 5 equiv of an amine base hinting that the in situ activation of both the amide and the Lewis acid is required. The reaction affords polysubstituted (E)-enamides.  相似文献

Nanowires are formed by indenting and subsequently retracting two pieces of sodium metal. Their cross section gradually reduces upon retraction and the diameters can be obtained from the conductance. In previous work we have demonstrated that when one constructs a histogram of diameters from large numbers of indentation-retraction cycles such histograms show a periodic pattern of stable nanowire diameters due to shell structure in the conductance modes. Here, we report the observation of a modulation of this periodic pattern, in agreement with predictions of a supershell structure.  相似文献

Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are exfoliated and functionalized predominantly as individuals by grinding them for minutes at room temperature with aryldiazonium salts in the presence of ionic liquids (ILs) and K(2)CO(3). This constitutes an extremely rapid and mild green chemical functionalization process for obtaining the individualized nanotube structures. A number of ILs and various reaction conditions were surveyed. Raman, XPS, UV/vis/NIR spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis, and atomic force and transmission electron microscopies were used to characterize the products.  相似文献

Two new tetrahydrofuran derivatives, mucorinic acids A (1) and B (2) as well as the three known secondary metabolites dehydroabietic acid (3), Δ8-dihydroabietic acid (4) and 8-pimarenic acid (5) were isolated from a solid culture of the fungus Mucor spp. isolated on insect Acalymma bivittula. The structure of these compounds was elucidated by analysis of NMR and MS spectroscopic data. Compounds were tested in antimicrobial and insecticidal assays. Dehydroabietic acid exhibited moderate larvicidal activity on Aedes aegypti larvae with 65% mortality at 10 ppm. Both new compounds 1 and 2 showed interesting antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistant S. aureus with MIC values in the 8–16 μg/ml.  相似文献
