Local Subexponentiality and Self-decomposability

The class of exponential tilts of convolution equivalent distributions is determined. As a corollary, the local subexponentiality of one-sided infinitely divisible distributions is characterized. It is applied to the subexponentiality of the densities of a self-decomposable distribution and its Lévy measure. Bondesson’s conjecture on the density of the Lévy measure of a lognormal distribution is solved as an example. Results of Denisov et al. on the distributions of random sums are extended to the two-sided case. Finally, the local subexponentiality of the distribution of the supremum of a random walk is characterized.     

Conformational reduction of DOPA in the gas phase studied by laser desorption supersonic jet laser spectroscopy

The conformational reduction in catecholamine neurotransmitters was studied by resonance enhanced multi photon ionization (REMPI), ultraviolet-ultraviolet (UV-UV) hole burning and infrared (IR) dip spectroscopy with applying a laser desorption supersonic jet technique to DOPA, which is one of the catecholamine neurotransmitters and has one more phenolic OH group than tyrosine. It is concluded that DOPA has a single observable conformer in the gas phase at low temperature. Quantum chemical calculations at several levels with or without the dispersion correction were also carried out to study stable conformations. From the comparison between the computational IR spectra and the experimental ones, the most stable structure was determined. It is strongly suggested that the conformational reduction is caused by electrostatic interactions, such as a dipole-dipole interaction, between the chain and OH groups.     

Gas permeation through hydrogels : I. Gel cellophane membranes

Permeabilities and diffusion coefficients of various gases, Ar, N₂, O₂, CO₂, CH₄, C₂H₄, C₃H₈ and C₄H₁₀, were measured for Water-swollen gel cellophane membranes. No dependence of permeabilities on gas pressure below 1 atm was found. It was observed that the permeability coefficients were not related linearly to the coefficients in bulk water. For the two states of water in the membrane, an analytical method is presented to estimate the diffusion coefficients and the solubilities in free water and non-freezing water. It was found that the diffusion coefficients in non-freezing water were lower than those in free water, and the solubilities in non-freezing water were higher than in free water for all gases studied except CO₂ and C₂H₄, which gave reverse results.     

A novel cyclization reaction of oxidodiazoalkanes: formation of pyrazoles and pyridazines

The thermal decomposition of dialkali metal salts of β- and γ-hydroxyketone tosyl-hydrazones in refluxing DME produced pyrazoles and pyridazines, respectively.     

Vibrational spectra and molecular conformations of 1,5-dichloro- and 1,5-dibromopentanes and 1,6-dichloro-and 1,6-dibromohexanes

The Raman and IR spectra of 1,5-dichloro- and 1,5-dibromopentanes and 1,6-dichloro-and 1,6-dibromohexanes have been measured. The normal coordinates have been calculated for these molecules using a consistent set of force constants and the molecular conformations studied by analysing the spectra with reference to the results of the calculations. In the crystalline solid state, 1,5-dichloropentane assumes the trans-trans-trans-gauche form and 1,5-dibromopentane, 1,6-dichloro- and 1,6-dibromohexanes assume the all-trans form. The normal coordinate treatment with the well-established force field was of great help in determining the whole molecular form of the relatively large chain molecules.     

Analysis of the dipole simulation method for two-dimensional Dirichlet problems in Jordan regions with analytic boundaries

This paper presents a stability and error estimate of the dipole simulation method applied to Dirichlet problems in Jordan regions. Specifically, it is proved that the error decays exponentially when the boundary data is analytic, and it decays algebraically when the boundary data is not analytic but belongs to some Sobolev space. Moreover, some numerical results and conjectures are presented.     

Enhancement of nonlinear optical response of exciton–polaritons by controlling thickness of GaAs layer

We demonstrate a remarkable thickness dependence of nonlinear optical response of exciton–polaritons in GaAs thin films by degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) at low temperature (T=5 K). High-quality samples of layer thickness from 80 to 200 nm were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Confined mode of the exciton–polariton dominantly contributed to the reflection spectra, which were examined by the calculation using a transfer matrix method. The DFWM intensity at exciton resonance was enhanced at a particular thickness (110 nm). This thickness dependence is in good agreement with the nonlocal theory, which shows a remarkable size dependence of the internal field relevant to the confined mode of the exciton–polaritons.     

An optical system for measuring the eccentricity of glass wool pipe — for industrial use

An optical system for measuring the eccentricity of the glass wool pipe has been developed for an industrial use. The system consists of a contact sensor, a photo light sensor and a signal processing system with a logic circuit. The system is simple, fast and efficient for practical use; it allows implementation of on-line process monitoring and alarm warning signals for unacceptable pipe eccentricity during manufacturing.
