Synergic extraction of metals with α-acyl-d-camphor and optically active lewis bases

Solvent extraction of europium (III), zinc (II) cobalt (II) with α-acyl-d-camphor and optically active isomers of quinine and quinidine was studied in order to obtain information on chirality recognition based on adduct formation between a chiral metal chelate and optically active isomers. It was possible to differentiate clearly between the adduct formation of quinine and that of quinidine in the synergic extraction of cobalt and europium with 3-heptafluorobutyryl- d-camphor and cobalt with 3-trifluoroacetyl-d-camphor.     

Characteristics of Gain-Guided Laser Diodes with Cylindrical-Mirror Cavity

We have developed highly reliable etched-mirror laser diodes using a dry etching method. The lasers without facet-coating have been operating stably over 2500 h under automatic-power control (APC) at a power of 3 mW/facet at 50°C. The gain-guided laser diodes with a cylindrical-mirror cavity (CMC) have coaxial mirrors and a fan-shaped stripe structure. By decreasing the curvature radius of the inner facet or increasing the stripe width of the inner facet, the beam waist parallel to the junction plane can be moved outside of the laser diode, while the beam waist perpendicular to the junction plane stops at the mirror facet. A particular CMC laser has a low astigmatism of 4.1 μm and a low relative intensity of noise (RIN) less than –134 dB/Hz at 4 mW under 0–1% optical feedback without high frequency current superposition.     

Studies on thermal degradation of acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene copolymer (ABS-Br) containing brominated flame retardant

The thermal degradation of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS-Br; 10 g) containing brominated flame retardant (Br: 9.59 wt.%) was carried out at 450 °C using a semi batch operation using two different temperature programs. The heating rate was found to affect the quality of the degradation oil and yield of products (liquid, gas and residue). Data on the effect of the temperature program on the accumulation of liquid products was presented. It was found that the majority of the bromine was concentrated in the carbon residue and while majority of the nitrogen accumulates in the liquid products irrespective of degradation mode. The use of a one step constant heating rate process (I) produced a higher liquid yield (39%), than a two step process (29%). Differences were also noted in the Br and N contained in the liquids produced by the two processes.     

Application of polyfluorophenazines to dichroic fluorescent dyes in guest-host liquid crystal displays

Novel dichroic fluorescent 2- and 2,7-disubstituted perfluorophenazines exhibit emission maxima in the range 570-600 nm in MLC-2039. The order parameter of fluorescence was observed in the range 0.29-0.49.
