Structural study of self-assembled monolayers of ferrocenylalkanethiols on gold by angleresolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

An angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study has been performed on structures of self-assembling systems, viz ferrocenylthiols on a gold (111) crystal. The angular dependence of the intensities of photoemission reveals that ferrocenyl groups are on the outermost layer, separated from the gold substrate by hydrocarbon chains of the thiol groups.     

On kinematical invariances of the equations of motion

Invariance properties of the equations of motion are considered from the differential geometric viewpoint, on making use of vector fields and differential forms. It will be shown that the kinematical symmetries generated from first integrals and the invariance such as the dilation can be treated on an equal footing.     

Two new tetranor-cycloartane glycosides from cimicifuga rhizome

Two new tetranor-cycloartane glycosides (1, 2) were isolated from Cimicifuga Rhizome. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis. These compounds suggested the existence of a biogenetic pathway into C-23 lactone-type cycloartane glycosides.     

Direct conversion to 2-phenyl-4-quinolones via a 4-alkoxyflavylium salt from a naturally occurring flavanone

A flavanone, in which a hydroxyl group at the 5-position was protected with a methyl group, converted to the corresponding 5-methoxy-2-phenyl-4-quinolone via flavylium salt under mild conditions. Flavanone-O-rhamnoglucoside, naringin, was also converted to 5-methoxy-2-phenyl-4-quinolon-7-O-rhamnoglucoside in the same way in an overall 25% yield.     

Analysis of tamoxifen and its metabolites in synthetic gastric fluid digests and urine samples using high-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray mass spectrometry

We report on the transformation of tamoxifen at 37 degrees C in synthetic gastric fluid as studied by high-performance liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The major transformation products detected were (E)-isomer of tamoxifen, metabolite D, and several unidentified components having m/z 404. Addition of pepsin to the gastric fluid inhibited formation of all of these products. We analyzed several urine samples from breast cancer patients undergoing tamoxifen treatment. Metabolite D was identified in the urine samples and in the gastric fluid digest at a retention time of 22.0 min eluting from a reversed-phase HPLC column. Although several metabolites were found in all the urine samples of patients, some metabolites were detected in one sample but not others, suggesting tamoxifen metabolism varies in patients.     

Two new cycloartane glycosides from the underground parts of Aquilegia vulgaris

Two new cycloartane glycosides, named aquilegiosides K and L, have been isolated from the dried underground parts of Aquilegia vulgaris. Their structures were determined by two dimensional (2D) NMR spectroscopic analysis and chemical evidence.     

Photoluminescence decay dynamics of silver/porous-silicon nanocomposites formed by metal-assisted etching

We investigate the photoluminescence (PL) properties of silver/porous-silicon (Ag/PSi) nanocomposites prepared by metal-assisted etching in ${\mathrm{Ag}}_2\mathrm{O}/\mathrm{HF}$ solution, on the basis of steady-state and time-resolved PL spectroscopy measurements. The PL intensity and peak position are strongly dependent on the ${\mathrm{Ag}}_2\mathrm{O}$ concentration. Time-resolved PL measurements reveal that the nonradiative rate decreases with an increase in the ${\mathrm{Ag}}_2\mathrm{O}$ concentration for the Ag/PSi nanocomposites. It is found from x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements that the decrease in the nonradiative rate is caused by the formation of ${\mathrm{SiO}}_2$ layers on the PSi surfaces. Further, the number of light-emitting Si nanocrystals in the nanocomposites, which is estimated from the PL decay rate and PL intensity, increases with the ${\mathrm{Ag}}_2\mathrm{O}$ concentration. From the wavelength dependence of the PL decay rate, it is found that the nonradiative rate is considerably dispersive, i.e., the shorter the wavelength, the higher the nonradiative rate.
