Cyclization of 1,6-enynes with allylic chromate species

[reaction: see text] Treatment of 1,6-enynes with tetramethallylchromate induces a cyclization reaction with concurrent introduction of a methallyl group. A catalytic amount of CrCl(3) combined with methallylmagnesium chloride also achieves this cyclization process. The resultant cyclic organometallic species undergo further functionalization upon reaction with electrophiles.     

Structural study of self-assembled monolayers of ferrocenylalkanethiols on gold by angleresolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

An angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study has been performed on structures of self-assembling systems, viz ferrocenylthiols on a gold (111) crystal. The angular dependence of the intensities of photoemission reveals that ferrocenyl groups are on the outermost layer, separated from the gold substrate by hydrocarbon chains of the thiol groups.     

Cardiac glycosides: 5. Stereoselective syntheses of digitoxigenin α-D, β-D, α-L,and β-L-glucosides

As part of a continuing study of cardiac g1ycos1des,^1,2 stereoselective syntheses of the four possible glucosides of digitoxigenin were developed via the thermodynamically produced tetra-O-benzyl-D- and L-glucosyl α-trichloroacetaimidates 2α and 11α, and the kinetically produced β-trichloroacetaimidates 2β and 11β. A 58%:19% isolated yield ratio of α-D and β-D benzyl protected glycosides 6 and 3 could be obtained in 30 minutes reaction at ?10°. Halide ion catalysis with a 2:1 excess of tetra-O-benzyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl bromide for 14 days in methylene chloride at room temperature gave a 39%:11% ratio of 6 and 3, along with 43% of recovered digitoxigenin. Debenzylation of the D-glucosides required milder conditions (20% Pd/C, atmospheric pressure, 45 min-1 hr) than the L-glucosides (40% Pd/C, 2 hr) but yields were typically 80% for both groups.     

On kinematical invariances of the equations of motion

Invariance properties of the equations of motion are considered from the differential geometric viewpoint, on making use of vector fields and differential forms. It will be shown that the kinematical symmetries generated from first integrals and the invariance such as the dilation can be treated on an equal footing.     

Network images of drainage channels in sea spray icing by MR microscopy

An MR imaging system was developed to visualize brine drainage channels in sea spray icing. Brine pockets trapped in spray-ice matrices during ice growth are structural features of sea spray icing. Brine in the spray ice sample had drained out; therefore, using a suction pump, we filled the air gaps in the drainage channels with dodecane. In the experiments, 0.5-1.0 h was necessary to accumulate signals sufficient to obtain a 3-D micro-image; the image matrix comprised 128(3) voxels (each voxel was 200 microm per side). The MIP view showed that sea spray icing has a developed drainage-channel network structure.     

Electrochemical assembly and potential-dependent plasmon absorption of au nanoclusters covered with a 4-aminothiophenol self-assembled monolayer

Gold nanoclusters covered with 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were electrochemically assembled on an Au or ITO electrode. The assembly mechanism is discussed on the basis of results of electrochemical, FT-IR, and XPS measurements. The intensity of plasmon absorption of the gold nanocluster assembly was shown to be dependent on applied potential as a result of electrochemical doping/undoping of a counteranion in the polyaniline film.     

Photochemical ligation of DNA conjugates through anthracene cyclodimer formation and its fidelity to the template sequences

Anthracene readily forms photoadducts, anthracene dimers, and this photodimerization reaction has been well characterized. In general, however, the reaction requires close proximity and certain spatial alignment of both reaction partners. DNA could provide an ideal scaffold for accelerating the photocyclic addition. We synthesized a number of anthracene-DNA conjugates. The sequences of the conjugates, 5'AntODNn and 3'AntODNn (the length of methylene linkers: n = 3 or 6), were designed to bind adjacent sequences of the template with the anthracene units directed such that they stacked with each other. The conjugates were only dimerized in the presence of the template by light irradiation. The efficiency was affected by one-base displacement in the template sequence.     

Two new tetranor-cycloartane glycosides from cimicifuga rhizome

Two new tetranor-cycloartane glycosides (1, 2) were isolated from Cimicifuga Rhizome. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis. These compounds suggested the existence of a biogenetic pathway into C-23 lactone-type cycloartane glycosides.     

Regioselective allylmetalation of allenes with tetraallylmanganate or allylmagnesium chloride under MnCl2 catalysis

[reaction: see text] Treatment of allenes with tetraallylmanganate provides allylated products with high regioselectivity. A catalytic amount of MnCl(2) combined with allylmagnesium chloride also achieves efficient allylmetalation of allenes. The resulting alkenylmagnesium species react with various electrophiles. In the presence of molecular oxygen, the alkenylmagnesium undergoes diallylation reaction. A cyclization reaction of 1,2,6-heptatriene with tetraallylmanganate is also described.
