Stereoselective synthesis and conformational study of novel 2',3'-Didehydro-2',3'-dideoxy-4'-selenonucleosides

Stereoselective synthesis of novel 2',3'-didehydro-2',3'-dideoxy-4'-selenonucleosides (4'-seleno-d4Ns) 4a- c was accomplished via 4'-selenoribofuranosyl pyrimidines 11a- c, as key intermediates. 4'-Selenoribofuranosyl pyrimidines 11a- c were efficiently synthesized from d-ribose or d-gulonic gamma-lactone using a Pummerer-type condensation as a key step. Introduction of 2',3'-double bond was achieved by treating cyclic 2',3'-thiocarbonate with 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,3,2-diazaphospholidine.     

Effect of substrate temperature on electrical and magnetic properties of epitaxial La1−x Pb x MnO3 films

Epitaxial La_1−x Pb _x MnO₃ (LPMO) thin films, grown on (100) SrTiO₃ substrates by laser ablation technique at different temperatures between 600 and 850°C, have been characterized for electrical and magnetic properties. The temperature dependence of resistivity showed that the metal-insulator transition temperature (T _MI) decreases with increasing substrate temperature, which has been attributed to decrease in Pb content in the filsm. The YBa₂Cu₃O _x /La_1−x MnO₃ heterostructures, exhibiting both superconductivity and ferromagnetism, have been fabricated.     

Microwave absorption studies of MgB2 superconductor

Microwave absorption studies have been carried out on MgB₂ superconductor using a standard X-band EPR spectrometer. The modulated low-field microwave absorption signals recorded for polycrystalline (grain size ∼ 10 μm) samples suggested the absence of weak-link character. The field dependent direct microwave absorption has been found to obey a ✓H dependence with two different slopes, which indicated a transition from strongly pinned lattice to flux flow regime.     

First synthesis of 4'-selenonucleosides showing unusual Southern conformation

The first synthesis of 4'-selenonucleosides was achieved using a Pummerer-type condensation as a key step. All stereoelectronic effects shown in 4'-oxonucleosides were overwhelmed by the size of selenium and steric interactions, driving the conformation to the C2'-endo/ C3'-exo twist (Southern) conformation.     

Working group report: Heavy-ion physics and quark-gluon plasma

This is the report of Heavy Ion Physics and Quark-Gluon Plasma at WHEPP-09 which was part of Working Group-4. Discussion and work on some aspects of quark-gluon plasma believed to have created in heavy-ion collisions and in early Universe are reported.     

Studies on the valence electronic structure of Fe and Ni in Fe x Ni1−x alloys

K _β-to-K _α X-ray intensity ratios of Fe and Ni in pure metals and in Fe _x Ni_1−x alloys (x=0.20, 0.50, 0.58) exhibiting similar crystalline structure have been measured following excitation by 59.54 keV γ-rays from a ²⁴¹Am point source, to understand as to why the properties of permalloy Fe_0.2Ni_0.8 is distinct from other alloy compositions. It is observed that the valence electronic structure of Fe_0.2Ni_0.8 alloy is totally different from other alloys which may be attributed to its special magnetic properties.     

Backlund transformations and exact solutions for a nonlinear elliptic equation modelling isothermal magnetostatic atmosphere

The equations of magnetostatic equilibria for a plasma in agravitational field are investigated analytically. For equilibriawith an ignorable spatial coordinate, the equations reduce toa single nonlinear elliptic equation for the magnetic potentialu known as the Grad-Shafranov equation. By specifying the arbitraryfunctions in this equation, a Liouville equation is obtained.Bäcklund transformations are described and applied to obtainexact solutions for the Liouville equation modelling an isothermalmagnetostatic atmosphere, in which the current density J isproportional to the exponential of the magnetic potential andmoveover falls off exponentially with distance vertical to thebase with an e-folding distance equal to the gravitational scaleheight.

Cycloaddition of Cyclohexa-2,4-dienones with Nitroolefins: An Unusual Regioselectivity and Expeditious Entry into Nitro-bicyclo[2.2.2]octenones

Cycloaddition of electron-deficient cyclohexa-2,4-dienones with nitroolefins leading to functionalized bicyclo[2.2.2]octenones with nitro groups is reported. A highly unusual regioselectivity was observed. Crystal structure of one of adducts has also been reported.
