In this paper the authors develop a method to accurately calculate localized vibrational modes for partially optimized molecular structures or for structures containing link atoms. The method avoids artificially introduced imaginary frequencies and keeps track of the invariance under global translations and rotations. Only a subblock of the Hessian matrix has to be constructed and diagonalized, leading to a serious reduction of the computational time for the frequency analysis. The mobile block Hessian approach (MBH) proposed in this work can be regarded as an extension of the partial Hessian vibrational analysis approach proposed by Head [Int. J. Quantum Chem. 65, 827 (1997)]. Instead of giving the nonoptimized region of the system an infinite mass, it is allowed to move as a rigid body with respect to the optimized region of the system. The MBH approach is then extended to the case where several parts of the molecule can move as independent multiple rigid blocks in combination with single atoms. The merits of both models are extensively tested on ethanol and di-n-octyl-ether.  相似文献

Electric fields offer a variety of functionalities to Lab‐on‐a‐Chip devices. The use of these fields often results in significant Joule heating, affecting the overall performance of the system. Precise knowledge of the temperature profile inside a microfluidic device is necessary to evaluate the implications of heat dissipation. This article demonstrates how an optically trapped microsphere can be used as a temperature probe to monitor Joule heating in these devices. The Brownian motion of the bead at room temperature is compared with the motion when power is dissipated in the system. This gives an estimate of the temperature increase at a specific location in a microfluidic channel. We demonstrate this method with solutions of different ionic strengths, and establish a precision of 0.9 K and an accuracy of 15%. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that transient heating processes can be monitored with this technique, albeit with a limited time resolution.  相似文献

Steady free surface flows are of interest in the fields of marine and hydraulic engineering. Fitting methods are generally used to represent the free surface position with a deforming grid. Existing fitting methods tend to use time-stepping schemes, which is inefficient for steady flows. There also exists a steady iterative method, but that one needs to be implemented with a dedicated solver. Therefore a new method is proposed to efficiently simulate two-dimensional (2D) steady free surface flows, suitable for use in conjunction with black-box flow solvers. The free surface position is calculated with a quasi-Newton method, where the approximate Jacobian is constructed in a novel way by combining data from past iterations with an analytical model based on a perturbation analysis of a potential flow. The method is tested on two 2D cases: the flow over a bottom topography and the flow over a hydrofoil. For all simulations the new method converges exponentially and in few iterations. Furthermore, convergence is independent of the free surface mesh size for all tests.  相似文献

Agricultural residues, such as grain by-products, are rich in the hydrolyzable carbohydrate polymers hemicellulose and cellulose; hence, they represent a readily available source of the fermentable sugars xylose and glucose. The biomass-to-ethanol technology is now a step closer to commercialization because a stable recombinant yeast strain has been developed that can efficiently ferment glucose and xylose simultaneously (coferment) to ethanol. This strain, LNH-ST, is a derivative ofSaccharomyces yeast strain 1400 that carries the xylose-catabolism encoding genes ofPichia stipitis in its chromosome. Continuous pure sugar cofermentation studies with this organism resulted in promising steady-state ethanol yields (70.4% of theoretical based on available sugars) at a residence time of 48 h. Further studies with corn biomass pretreated at the pilot scale confirmed the performance characteristics of the organism in a simultaneous saccharification and cofermentation (SSCF) process: LNH-ST converted 78.4% of the available glucose and 56.1% of the available xylose within 4 d, despite the presence of high levels of metabolic inhibitors. These SSCF data were reproducible at the bench scale and verified in a 9000-L pilot scale bioreactor.  相似文献
