Investigating the impact of an urban community school effort on middle school STEM-related student outcomes over time through propensity score matched methods

This study investigates the impact of an urban community school reform initiative that focuses on an immigrant and refugee population in middle school. A 6th–8th grade cohort of students in the community school are followed over time and compared to a propensity score matched group on overall GPA, mathematics, and science academic outcomes and traditional college preparedness indicators. Further, a deeper dive into the intersection of gender and race/ethnicity was examined on all outcomes. Findings revealed that students in the urban community school demonstrated significantly more preparedness to enroll in college and move into a STEM field if they desired compared to the matched students. All gender/racial groups in the community school performed significantly higher than those in the matched group. Further, all gender/racial groups of students in the urban community school defied standard academic achievement drops common over time in middle school, and instead increase overall, math, and science grades from 6th to 8th grade.     

Predicting supercontinuum pulse collisions with simulations exhibiting temporal aliasing

Interactions between supercontinuum (SC) light pulses, produced by the propagation of rapidly sequenced picosecond pump laser pulses along a photonic crystal fiber, result in spectral broadening, which we attribute to interpulse soliton collisions. This phenomenon was measured experimentally, following our observation of spectral broadening in numerical simulations that exhibit so-called "pulse wraparound" or "temporal aliasing." This occurs in simulations with narrow time grids: as early parts of the SC pulse leave the computational time domain, they "reenter" at the beginning and so interact with later parts of the evolving SC pulse. We show that this provides an effective model to predict the experimentally observed spectral changes.     

Fingerprinting DNA Oxidation Processes: IR Characterization of the 5‐Methyl‐2′‐Deoxycytidine Radical Cation

Methylated cytidine plays an important role as an epigenetic signal in gene regulation. Its oxidation products are assumed to be involved in active demethylation processes but also in damaging DNA. Here, we report the photochemical production of the 5‐methyl‐2′‐deoxycytidine radical cation via a two‐photon ionization process. The radical cation is detected by time‐resolved IR spectroscopy and identified by band assignment using density functional theory calculations. Two final oxidation products are characterized with liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.     

Modeling pi-pi interactions with the effective fragment potential method: the benzene dimer and substituents

This study compares the results of the general effective fragment potential (EFP2) method to the results of a previous combined coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)] and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) study [Sinnokrot and Sherrill, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2004, 126, 7690] on substituent effects in pi-pi interactions. EFP2 is found to accurately model the binding energies of the benzene-benzene, benzene-phenol, benzene-toluene, benzene-fluorobenzene, and benzene-benzonitrile dimers, as compared with high-level methods [Sinnokrot and Sherrill, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2004, 126, 7690], but at a fraction of the computational cost of CCSD(T). In addition, an EFP-based Monte Carlo/simulated annealing study was undertaken to examine the potential energy surface of the substituted dimers.     

Kinetic studies of composite propellants by differential scanning calorimetry : Effect of heating rate and sample geometry

Differential scanning calorimetry has been used to calculate some kinetic parameters of a typical composite solid propellant (PBAA based). The heating-rate affects the development of thermograms and also the apparent activation energy. Sample geometry has a definitive influence on thermograms and on sample ignition but seems to have no effect on activation energy calculations.     

Preparation of 2-iodotryptamine and 2-iodo-5-methoxytryptamine

The regiospecific iodination of indole and 5-methoxyindole, and the elaboration of these 2-iodoindoles to the corresponding tryptamines, are described.     

The Synthesis of Benzimidazoles and Quinoxalines from Aromatic Diamines and Alcohols by Iridium‐Catalyzed Acceptorless Dehydrogenative Alkylation

Benzimidazoles and quinoxalines are important N‐heteroaromatics with many applications in pharmaceutical and chemical industry. Here, the synthesis of both classes of compounds starting from aromatic diamines and alcohols (benzimidazoles) or diols (quinoxalines) is reported. The reactions proceed through acceptorless dehydrogenative condensation steps. Water and two equivalents of hydrogen are liberated in the course of the reactions. An Ir complex stabilized by the tridentate P^N^P ligand N²,N⁶‐bis(di‐isopropylphosphino)pyridine‐2,6‐diamine revealed the highest catalytic activity for both reactions.
