Second-order nonlinear optical properties from poled silicate channel-waveguide

Thin film waveguides of germanosilicate glass are fabricated byrf-sputtering. Second-order nonlinearity ofd ₃₃=3.2 pm/V is obtained from electrically poled film, and the lifetime of the nonlinearity is found to be310 years. The poled channel-waveguide is prepared and the Cerenkov-type phase-matched frequency doubling is successfully observed.     

Michael addition reactions of acetoacetates and malonates with acrylates in water under strongly alkaline conditions

Michael addition reactions of acetoacetates and malonates with acrylates in a 5 M KOH aqueous solution without using any other catalysts are described. When they are either tert-butyl or benzyl esters, the reaction proceeded very rapidly to afford moderate to high yields of the corresponding bis-Michael adducts that are unexpectedly stable under these conditions.     

Temperature-Responsiveness of A-B-A Block Telomers at Solid-Liquid Interfaces

Macroinitiators were prepared by coupling disuccinimidyl ester of 4,4'-azobis(cyanovaleric acid) with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PIPA), which had an amino group at its end. Styrene was telomerized with the initiators in THF. When the styrene content in the A-B-A block telomer obtained (PIPA-b-PSt-b-PIPA) was high, the telomer formed an irreversible aggregation resulting in microspheres, whereas the telomer with a much shorter styrene block could be dispersed monomolecularly. The telomers dispersed in water were aggregated by raising the temperature above 32 degrees C due to a coil-globule transition of PIPA moieties. The PIPA-b-PSt-b-PIPA could be strongly adsorbed to polystyrene (PSt) solid surfaces to form a layer, and the PSt blocks might lay on the PSt surface and the PIPA blocks might direct to the solution phase. The contact angle of air bubbles on the surface of telomer-coated PSt in the air-in-water system was dependent on temperature; that is, with the increase in temperature the contact angle of air bubbles largely decreased and leveled off above the coil-globule transition temperature (Tc). Correspondingly, the amount of protein Concanavalin A adsorbed to the telomer layer deposited on the PSt surface increased gradually with an increase in temperature and leveled off above the Tc. These phenomena were attributed to the changes in hydrophobicity of the telomer layer below and above the Tc. The usefulness of macroinitiators in preparing various kinds of block telomers which have responsiveness to external stimuli was strongly suggested. Copyright 1999 Academic Press.     

pH-regulated formation of amyloid-like beta-sheet assemblies from polyglutamate grafted polyallylamine

A novel artificial protein with simple primary structure, poly(gamma-methyl-L-glutamate)-grafted polyallylamine, has been prepared and the resultant peptide has shown a unique property of pH-regulated conformation and morphology.     

Efficient synthesis of isoplagiochin D, a macrocyclic bis(bibenzyls), by utilizing an intramolecular Suzuki-Miyaura reaction

Isoplagiochin D, a highly strained macrocyclic bis(bibenzyls) with two biaryl units isolated from the liverwort Pladiochila fruticosa, was prepared in 10.6% overall yield for the 11 steps by an efficient synthetic approach involving the construction of two bibenzyl and one biaryl units using Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons and Suzuki-Miyaura protocols.     

Effects of dipole moment, linkers, and chromophores at side chains on long-range electron transfer through helical peptides

Octadecapeptides carrying a ferrocene moiety at the molecular terminal were self-assembled on gold, and long-range electron transfer from the ferrocene moiety to gold was investigated by electrochemical methods. Effects on electron transfer of dipole moment of helical peptides, linkers connecting the peptide to gold, and chromophores introduced into the side chains were discussed. Cyclic voltammetry of the monolayers in an aqueous solution revealed that long-range electron transfer over 40 A occurred along the peptide molecule. Chronoamperometry showed that the long-range electron transfer should be ascribed to a hopping mechanism with use of amide groups as hopping sites. Electron transfer through the long peptide was not significantly accelerated by the dipole moment. However, the linker remarkably affected electron transfer depending on whether it was a methylene chain or a phenylene group, suggesting that local electron transfer between gold and the peptides should be the slowest step to determine the overall rate. Pyrenyl groups introduced into the side chains in the middle of the peptide molecule did not noticeably change electron transfer, probably because pyrenyl groups were too distant to allow direct electron transfer between them. Electrostatic potential profiles across the peptide monolayers were also calculated to explain reasonably the several interesting features in the present peptide systems.     

Electron microscope observation of lattice defects in the FeCr σ-phase

The lattice image of the FeCr σ-phase was observed by high-resolution electron microscopy with the c axis of the tetragonal cell parallel to the incident beam. It was found that bright dots of the observed image correspond to the positions of atoms in the $\text{z = ±}\text{1}\text{4}$ planes of the σ-phase structure. Sequence faults were found in the irregular part of the lattice image. The analysis of the faults shows that an extra plane of $\text{1}\text{2}\text{a}{}_0$ width is inserted into the regular structure and one side of the fault is slightly shifted parallel to the fault plane with respect to the other side, which is consistent with the model proposed by Frank and Kasper. A unit cell step of the sequence faults was found and a model of the step was proposed.     

2,2′-Isopropylidenebis[(4S,5R)-4,5-di(2-naphthyl)-2-oxazoline] ligand for asymmetric cyclization-carbonylation of meso-2-alkyl-2-propargylcyclohexane-1,3-diols

The oxidative cyclization-carbonylation of meso-2-alkyl-2-propargylcyclohexane-1,3-diols mediated by Pd(II) with chiral bisoxazoline (box ligand) afforded bicyclic-β-alkoxyacrylates. Based on a ligand screening, 2,2′-isopropylidenebis[(4S,5R)-4,5-di(2-naphthyl)-2-oxazoline] ligand has been developed. The products with a chiral quaternary carbon were obtained in 71-100% yields with 85-95% ee.     

Synthetic studies directed toward the assembly of the C-glycoside fragment of the telomerase inhibitor D8646-2-6

[reaction: see text] Construction and characterization of the C-glycosidic moiety of telomerase inhibitor D8646-2-6 (1) are described. This is the first example of the C-glycosylation using electron-poor aromatics, 4-hydroxypyrone, as a glycosyl acceptor. The glycosylation reaction and base-promoted isomerization affords desired beta-C-glycoside in a 61% overall yield.     

The first synthesis of a methano[60]fullerene with an electron-donating group at the methano-bridge carbon: synthesis and reaction of aminomethano[60]fullerene

[reaction: see text] Aminomethano[60]fullerene was synthesized for the first time as a trifluoromethanesulfonic acid salt by applying the Curtius rearrangement of azidocarbonylmethano[60]fullerene as the key reaction. Aminomethano[60]fullerene thus obtained was found to be able to react with various acyl chlorides to afford the corresponding amides.
