Cross‐sectional structural characterization of the surface of exfoliated HOPG using HRTEM‐EELS

We analyzed the surface atomic structure of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate exfoliated with adhesive tape, using high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy‐electron energy‐loss spectroscopy (STEM‐EELS). The surface step height of the exfoliated HOPG substrate was determined using high‐angle annular dark‐field‐scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF‐STEM) images and the depth profiles of the EELS spectra of a cross‐sectioned thin foil specimen prepared via focused ion beam milling. The exfoliated surface of the HOPG substrate presented disordered and curved graphene layers. The STEM‐EELS measurements indicated that upon exfoliation, the surface of the HOPG substrate reacted with atmospheric water and oxygen molecules.     

Fragmentation of the metastable molecular ion of methyl lactate: The formation of oxygen-protonated methanol [CH3OH2]+ involving double hydrogen atom transfers

The spontaneous unimolecular dissociation reaction of methyl lactate (1) ionized by electron impact was investigated by a combination of mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy spectrometry and deuterium labeling. The metastable ions 1^+· decompose in a variety of ways: four fragment peaks are observed at m/z 89, 76, 61, and 45, which correspond to the losses of ?H₃, CO, CH₃?O, and ?OOCH₃, respectively. Double hydrogen atom transfer occurs in the third reaction. The source-generated m/z 61 ions decompose into oxygen-protonated methanols at m/z 33 ([CH₃OH ₂ ⁺ ]) by the loss of CO with double hydrogen atom migration. Both hydroxyl and methyne hydrogen atoms in 1 ^+· are present in the resultant protonated methanols.     

Enantioselective acylation of 1,2- and 1,3-diols catalyzed by aminophosphinite derivatives of (1S,2R)-1-amino-2-indanol

A phosphinite derivative that can be easily prepared in two steps from commercially available aminoindanol was found to be an effective catalyst for enantioselective acylation of diols. For the asymmetric desymmetrization of meso-1,2-diols, the corresponding monoester was obtained in up to 95% ee from the reaction in the presence of 5 mol % catalyst.     

MNBA-mediated β-lactone formation: mechanistic studies and application for the asymmetric total synthesis of tetrahydrolipstatin

Various β-lactones were prepared from β-hydroxycarboxylic acids by intramolecular dehydration condensation using MNBA, an effective coupling reagent, along with a nucleophilic catalyst. The transition state that provides the desired 4-membered ring model system is disclosed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the structural features of the transition form are discussed. This method was successfully applied to the asymmetric total synthesis of tetrahydrolipstatin (THL), an antiobestic drug used in clinical treatment to inhibit the activity of pancreatic lipase.     

Fluorescence imaging of potassium ions in living cells using a fluorescent probe based on a thrombin binding aptamer-peptide conjugate

When a biotinylated FRET probe based on a peptide-thrombin binding aptamer conjugate was introduced together with streptavidin and biotinylated nuclear export signal peptide into HeLa cells, the resulting ternary complex enabled visualization of K(+) concentration changes in the cell.     

Synthesis of diazepinoquinoxalines and imidazolobenzopteridines

Diazepinoquinoxalines 3, 4 and imidazolobenzopteridines 5, 6a-d, 7a-d, 8, 9 were synthesized from 3-allylamino-6,7-dimethyl-2-quinoxalinecarboxamide ( 1 ) and 2-allylamino-6,7-dimethyl-3,4-dihydrobenzo[g]pteridin-4-one ( 2 ) by the intramolecular cyclization using phenylselenenyl chloride.
