Determination of urea by ion chromatography with an immobilized urease reactor

An immobilized urease reactor can be used with ion chromatography for the simultaneous determination of urea, and sodium, potassium and ammonium ions. The conversion of urea to ammonium ion was found to be 76.5%. The calibration graph for urea was linear over the range 1 × 10^?5?1 × 10^?3 M (RSD 3%). The method was applied to human urine and a chemical fertilizer.     

Antitumor and immunomodulating activities of a beta-glucan obtained from liquid-cultured Grifola frondosa

The effects of the beta-1,3-glucan, LELFD, obtained from liquid-cultured mycelium of Grifola frondosa, on the growth of syngeneic tumors and immune responses in mice were examined. In Meth A or IMC solid tumor systems, LELFD administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) or intralesionally (i.l.) exhibited significant antitumor effects. However, the growth of L1210 and P388 leukemias was unaffected by the injection of LELFD. The injection of LELFD i.p. enhanced the activities of natural killer cells and macrophages in mice. LELFD also enhanced the antibody response when it was injected i.p. with sheep red blood cells into mice. Furthermore, it was found that LELFD could activate the alternative complement pathway.     

Facile construction and divergent transformation of polycyclic isoxazoles: direct access to polyketide architectures

[reaction: see text] Base-promoted cyclocondensation of C-chloro oximes with cyclic 1,3-diketones affords functionalized isoxazoles in good yield and under convenient reaction conditions. This process enables the synthesis of highly substituted products with notable functional group tolerance. The products obtained are directly converted to a variety of polyketide-derived polycyclic structures including xanthenes, anthracenes, and benzophenones.     

A new microbial electrode for BOD estimation

A new microbial electrode using immobilizedClostridium butyricum was prepared for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) estimation of wastewaters. The current of the electrode was decreased with time until a steady state was reached. The steady state current was in all cases attained within 30-40 min at 37°C, and the maximum current output was obtained at 37°C and pH between 6.2 and 7.0. A linear relationship was obtained between the steady state current and BOD. The steady state current values were reproducible within ±7% of the relative error. The BOD of industrial wastewaters can be estimated by using the microbial electrode. Relative error of the BOD estimation of industrial wastewaters was within ± 10%. The current output of the microbial electrode was almost constant for 30 days.     

Detection of environmental chemicals by SPR assay using branched cyclodextrin as sensor ligand

We obtained the association constants Ka of estrogen (E2) and environmental chemicals by the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assay using the immobilized mono-6-O-α-maltosyl-β-CD (G₂βCD) compared with the immobilized β-CD and the immobilized estrogen receptor (ER). The association behavior of G₂βCD was shown as a ER model compound. The calibration curve was determined by the initial rate of association depending on the various concentrations, and the minimum detectable concentrations in the order of parts per billion were calculated. The SPR assay has advantages that the pre-treatment of the sample is not necessary and the immobilized ligand is stable and useful for the repeated measurement.     

4,7‐Diiodo‐2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole and 7,7′‐diiodo‐4,4′‐bi(2,1,3‐benzothiadiazole)

In the crystal structures of the title compounds, C₆H₂I₂N₂S, (I), and C₁₂H₄I₂N₄S₂, (II), respectively, a large number of short inter‐heteroatom contacts, such as S?N, I?I and N?I, are observed. In (II), which is non‐centrosymmetric, two halves of the mol­ecule are related by a crystallographic twofold axis.     

Reversed-phase high-performance thin-layer chromatography of hematoporphyrin and its nickel,copper and zinc complexes

Summary The thin-layer chromatographic mobility of hematoporphyrin IX (Hp) and its metal complexes on octyl (C₈)- or octadecyl (C₁₈)-bonded silica gel plate is described. The mobility order for those compounds is regular on both kinds of plate with various compositions of methanol-phosphate buffer mixtures as the developing solvents; thus, Cu-complex < Ni-complex < Hp (free acid) < Zn-complex. The combination of a C₁₈-plate with an 85∶15 (vol/vol) mixture of methanol and phosphate buffer (pH 3) is recommended for the successful separation of these four compounds.     

Unexpected formation of benzaldehydes by the reactions of dithioacetals derived from cinnamaldehydes with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone in aqueous solvents

1,3-Dithianes 1 , 1,3-dithiolanes 2 , and diphenyl dithioacetals 3 derived from cinnamaldehydes reacted with 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone in aqueous solvents to give benzaldehydes 4 . Hydride transfer from 1–3 to 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone followed by hydrolysis and oxidative carbon-carbon bond cleavage would produce benzaldehydes 4 .     

Singular value decomposition applied to the compression of T3 amplitude for the coupled cluster method

We apply the singular value decomposition to compress the degrees of freedom of T3 amplitude for the CCSDT-1 method (compressed CCSDT-1). This method enables us to make the number of the T3 amplitudes less than that of the T2 amplitudes, making CCSDT-1 calculations much less expensive without losing accuracy. We perform test calculations on some atoms and molecules to investigate the applicability of this method. Computational results for the electronic energies as well as timings of these calculations are presented.
