Experimental observation of electrostatic ion cyclotron waves modified by minority ions

Electrostatic ion cyclotron waves in the presence of light minority-species ions are experimentally investigated. The observations reveal that already a small fraction (～1%) of the minority concentratios leads to a new cutoff and resonance near the minority-cyclotron-resonance frequency.     

Age-dependent plasticity in the superior temporal sulcus in deaf humans: a functional MRI study

Background  

Sign-language comprehension activates the auditory cortex in deaf subjects. It is not known whether this functional plasticity in the temporal cortex is age dependent. We conducted functional magnetic-resonance imaging in six deaf signers who lost their hearing before the age of 2 years, five deaf signers who were >5 years of age at the time of hearing loss and six signers with normal hearing. The task was sentence comprehension in Japanese sign language.     

Efficient synthesis of (±)-γ-lycorane employing stereoselective conjugate addition to nitroolefin

(±)-γ-Lycorane 3 was synthesized in 52% overall yield via seven steps from 5 by employing the highly stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of 5 to 9 and diastereoselective conjugate addition of aryllithium to a nitroolefin 10 as two key steps.     

Ancillary ligand effect on single-site styrene polymerization: isospecificity of group 4 metal bis(phenolate) catalysts

Styrene is polymerized isospecifically by group 4 metal complexes that contain a C2-symmetrically coordinated 1,4-dithiabutane-linked bis(phenolato) ligand activated by methylaluminoxane.     

Total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes by sequential chemoselective conjugate addition-stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of an omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester

[reaction: see text] An omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester underwent a chemoselective conjugate addition of a nitroolefin moiety with aryllithium to produce a psi-aryl-omega-nitro-alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, which was then stereoselectively cyclized by intramolecular nitro-Michael reaction giving a functionalized cyclohexane applicable to the total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes.     

Critical behavior of metal-insulator transition in La1-(x)Sr(x)VO3

Critical behavior of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) coupled with spin/orbital correlations has been investigated for single crystals of La1-(x)Sr(x)VO3. In the paramagnetic (PM) metal phase (x > 0.260), the precursor to the MIT manifests itself as an enhancement of carrier effective mass. In the antiferromagnetic (AF) metal phase (0.178 < or = x < or = 0.260), the carrier density decreases and the correlation of the orbital seems to evolve towards the MIT (x = 0.178). In the AF insulating phase (x < 0.178), the distinct first-order structural phase transition occurs with the decrease of temperature, perhaps concomitantly with the orbital ordering.
