Efficient synthesis of (±)-γ-lycorane employing stereoselective conjugate addition to nitroolefin

(±)-γ-Lycorane 3 was synthesized in 52% overall yield via seven steps from 5 by employing the highly stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of 5 to 9 and diastereoselective conjugate addition of aryllithium to a nitroolefin 10 as two key steps.     

Total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes by sequential chemoselective conjugate addition-stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of an omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester

[reaction: see text] An omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester underwent a chemoselective conjugate addition of a nitroolefin moiety with aryllithium to produce a psi-aryl-omega-nitro-alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, which was then stereoselectively cyclized by intramolecular nitro-Michael reaction giving a functionalized cyclohexane applicable to the total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes.     

Alternate stranded triplex formation of chimeric DNA composed of tandem alpha- and beta-anomeric strands

A chimeric oligoDNA composed of a natural beta-anomeric oligonucleotide portion and an unnatural alpha-anomeric oligonucleotide portion forms an alternate stranded triplex possessing enhanced thermal stability compared to the triplexes composed of the parental oligomers.     

An intense pulsed positron beam

A positron pulsing system for an intense positron beam generated by an electron linac is reported. The pulsing system generates an intense pulsed positron beam of variable energy and variable pulse period. The pulsed positron beam is used as a non-destructive probe for various material research. In this paper, we also discuss applications of the pulsed positron beam: positron lifetime spectroscopy, age-momentum correlation spectroscopy, positronium time-of-flight measurement, and positron annihilation-induced Auger electron spectroscopy with a time-of-flight technique.     

Drying dissipative structures of the aqueous suspensions of monodisperse bentonite particles

Macroscopic and microscopic dissipative structural patterns formed in the course of drying the fractionated and monodisperse bentonite particles (plate-like in their shape) in aqueous deionized suspension and in the presence of NaCl have been studied on a cover glass. The patterns coexisted with the broad ring of the hill accumulated with the particles and with the round hills are formed around the outside edges of the film and in the center, respectively, in the macroscopic scale. By the addition of NaCl the pattern shifts from the broad ring to the round hill in the center. The spoke-like cracks, which have been observed for the suspensions of the spherical particles so often hitherto, are not observed at all for the bentonite suspensions. The characteristic convection flow of the particles and the interactions among the particles and substrate are important for the macroscopic pattern formation. Wrinkled, branch-like and/or star-like fractal patterns are observed in the microscopic scale. These patterns are determined mainly by the electrostatic and polar interactions between the particles and/or between the particle and the substrate in the course of drying.     

Age-dependent plasticity in the superior temporal sulcus in deaf humans: a functional MRI study

Background  

Sign-language comprehension activates the auditory cortex in deaf subjects. It is not known whether this functional plasticity in the temporal cortex is age dependent. We conducted functional magnetic-resonance imaging in six deaf signers who lost their hearing before the age of 2 years, five deaf signers who were >5 years of age at the time of hearing loss and six signers with normal hearing. The task was sentence comprehension in Japanese sign language.     

The unusual micelle micropolarity of partially fluorinated gemini surfactants sensed by pyrene fluorescence

New gemini surfactants having two fluorocarbon chains were prepared by refluxing partially fluorinated alkyl bromide with N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-1,6-diaminohexane in acetonitrile. The partially fluorinated gemini surfactants containing a six-methylene spacer chain are easily soluble in water. The critical micelle concentrations (cmc's) were determined by various fluorescent probe methods. The hydrophobicity of a CF2 group was estimated to be 1.5 times that of a CH2 group according to the cmc values. The micelle micropolarity of a fluorocarbon gemini sensed by pyrene fluorescence was unusually high, suggesting an apparent iceberg-like environment in the location of pyrene. The significantly small micelle aggregation numbers of fluorinated gemini surfactants were ascertained by the pyrene fluorescence quenching method. The micelle ionization degree estimated by fluorescence quenching of 6-methoxy-N-(3-sulfopropyl)quinolinium (SPQ) gave tendencies similar to those of the corresponding hydrocarbon geminis.     

Multiple-scattering approach to Sn L3-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) analyses for organic tin compounds

We apply multiple-scattering calculations to the analyses of Sn L₃-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra for environmental organotin compounds such as SnCl_4−nMe_n, SnCl_4−nBt_n, and SnCl_4−nPh_n (n = 0–4) where Me = CH₃, Bt = C₄H₉, and Ph = C₆H₅. The XANES peak at 3960 eV has rich information on the local structure. Referring to the optimized structures by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, multiple-scattering calculations well explain the observed spectral changes for different “organic extents”. The present study also supports the widely-used semiempirical rule called ‘Natoli’s rule’ for these environmental compounds, which will be useful to use XANES spectra for the practical analytical tools.
