Synthesis of large macrocyclic tetraaza compounds with a methylene backbone: Cyclo[-NH- (CH2)n-]4, (n = 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10). The formation of 28-, 32-, 36-, 40- and 44-membered rings

A series of macrocyclic tetraamines with 28-, 32-, 36-, 40- and 44-membered rings have been efficiently prepared from the corresponding ditosylamide and monobromoalcohol derivatives in 6 steps via a double condensation reaction. Overall yields were: 41, 41, 46, 29, and 33%, respectively, for 1,8,15,22-tetraazacyclooctacontane ( 11a ), 1,9,17,25-tetraazacyclodotriacontane ( 11b ), 1,10,19,28-tetraazacyclohexatriacontane ( 11c ), 1,11,21,31-tetraazacyclotetracontane ( 11d ) and 1,12,23,34-tetraazacyclotetratetracontane ( 11e ).     

Thermodynamically stable vesicle formation from glycolipid biosurfactant sponge phase

Thermodynamically stable vesicle (L(alpha1)) formation from glycolipid biosurfactant sponge phase (L(3)) and its mechanism were investigated using a "natural" biocompatible mannosyl-erythritol lipid-A (MEL-A)/L-alpha-dilauroylphosphatidylcholine (DLPC) mixture by varying the composition. The trapping efficiency for calcein and turbidity measurements clearly indicated the existence of three regions: while the trapping efficiencies of the mixed MEL-A/DLPC assemblies at the compositions with X(DLPC)< or =0.1 or X(DLPC)> or =0.8 were almost zero, the mixed assemblies at the compositions with 0.1 or =0.8 were multilamellar vesicles (L(alpha)) with diameter from 2 to 10 microm. Meanwhile, dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement revealed that the average size of the vesicles at the composition of X(DLPC)=0.3 was 633.2 nm, which is remarkably small compared to other compositions. Moreover, the mixed vesicle solution at the composition of X(DLPC)=0.3 was slightly bluish and turbid and kept its dispersion stability at 25 degrees C for more than 3 months, indicating the formation of a thermodynamically stable vesicle (L(alpha1)). These results exhibited the formation of a thermodynamically stable vesicle (L(alpha1)) with a high dispersibility from the MEL-A/DLPC mixture. The asymmetric distribution of MEL-A and DLPC in the two vesicle monolayers caused by the difference in geometrical structures is very likely to have changed their self-assembled structure from a sponge phase (L(3)) to a thermodynamically stable vesicle (L(alpha1)).     

Cu(I)-catalyzed direct enantioselective cross aldol-type reaction of acetonitrile

Direct catalytic enantioselective cross aldol-type reaction of an acetate surrogate was developed using Cu alkoxide-chiral phosphine complexes as catalysts. Chemoselective activation and deprotonation of the donor substrate (acetonitrile) by the soft metal alkoxide in a strongly donating solvent (HMPA) are key to success in this reaction. Useful chemical yields and promising enantioselectivities are produced using either DTBM-SEGPHOS or a tuned BIPHEP as a chiral ligand. [reaction: see text]     

Ion-exchange selectivity and chromatographic separation of trivalent metals on titanium antimonate

Summary The ion exchange selectivity of trivalent metal ions has been determined on titanium antimonate cation exchanger prepared by coprecipitation of antimony to titanium at different mole ratios. The selectivity sequence Al³⁺<Cr³⁺<Ga³⁺<In³⁺<Fe³⁺ was found for trivalent metal ions at an initial concentration of 10^–4 mol dm^–3 in nitric acid media. A high separation factor ^Ga/Al = Kd^Ga/Kd^Al, 4.8×10³, was observed for the Ga³⁺–Al³⁺ pair on titanium antimonate with an antimony to titanium ratio of 0.34. The effective separation of Ga³⁺ and In³⁺ from Al³⁺ was achieved using a 3 cm×0.5 cm i.d. column containing titanium antimonate with an antimony to titanium ratio of 0.34.     

Image analysis in the electron microscopy of cellulose protofibrils II. Digital correlation methods

Electron micrographs of parallel arrays of negatively stained ramie cellulose protofibrils were analyzed using the two-dimensional digital autocorrelation function (ACF). The method is based upon the statistical analysis of images in real space. The ACF shows strong parallel streaks of high correlation, and the lateral distance between adjacent streaks allows the mean interfibrillar distance to be estimated as 3.7 nm. The intensity profile along the streaks shows a weak modulation with peaks occurring at integral multiples of 3 or 6 nm. These results provide direct evidence that there is a regular axial texture in the protofibrils, and corroborate the conclusions previously drawn from optical diffraction analysis. Using the difference vectors found in the ACF it has been possible to reduce the picture noise level by linear integration, thereby obtaining an enhanced image. A preliminary result obtained in this way suggests that the projected protofibril morphology associated with the observed axial periodicity is a ribbon-like zigzag structure. Possible applications of the method for future work are discussed.     

Emission spectrographic determination of trace elements in atmospheric particulate matter

Air containing particulate material was passed continuously for one month through a low-volume air sampler equipped with a cyclone to exclude particulates greater than 10 μm in diameter. The samples and filters were ashed in a low-temperature plasma and, after addition of In₂O₃ support, palladium internal standard and graphite buffer, the ashes were analyzed by a.c. are emission spectrometry. Standard samples were prepared from a commercial standard containing 49 elements. The procedure allows the determination of 14 trace metals (Ag, Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sn, Ti, V, Zn) with relative standard deviations of 1.4–15.1%. The procedure has been applied successfully to monthly determinations of the average atmospheric concentrations of these elements in Kobe City for the past three years.     

Contracted polarization functions for B to Ar

Using optimal exponents for B through Ne given by Dunning and those for Al through Ar by Woon and Dunning, d-type contracted polarization functions (2d/1d), (3d/1d), and (3d/2d) are generated from natural orbitals of atomic single and double excitation configuration interaction (SDCI) calculations, where the numbers before and after the slash are those of the primitive and contracted Gaussian type functions. The resulting contracted functions are tested on N₂ and P₂ molecules by self-consistent field and SDCI calculations, which clarify characteristics of the present polarization functions. Cross-linking chemistry and biology: development of multifunctional photoaffinity probes

An efficient method of photoaffinity labeling has been developed based on rationally designed multifunctional photoprobes. Photoaffinity techniques have been used to elucidate the protein structure at the interface of biomolecules by the photochemical labeling of interacting sites. However, the identification of labeled sites within target proteins is often difficult. Novel biotinyl bioprobes bearing a diazirine photophore have contributed significantly to the rapid elucidation of ligand binding sites within proteins, thereby extending conventional photoaffinity methods. This article discusses the synthesis and applications of various photoprobes bearing a biotin, including strategies using cleavable linkages between photophores. The combination of photoaffinity methods with chip technology is also described as a novel entry to rapid affinity-based screening of inhibitors. This review focuses on a rapid and reliable photoaffinity method utilizing diazirine-based multifunctional photoprobes with numerous potential applications in functional proteomics of biomolecular interactions.     

Removal of the impurities from environmental water samples for tritium measurement by liquid scintillation counting

Liquid scintillation counting is the most popular method for tritium measurement, however, it takes much time and a lot of doing to distill off the impurities before mixing the sample water and liquid scintillation cocktail. We have investigated the possibility of an alternative method to the distillation. We have found out that the filtration can be an alternative to distillation for the environmental water samples before electrolytic enrichment.     

Synthesis of dehydroxy-trans-resorcylide by intramolecular alkylation of the protected cyanohydrin using a butadiene telomer as a building block

Dehydrroxy-trans-resorcylide ($\text{15}$) was synthesized by efficient intramolecular alkylation of the protected cyanohydrin. The butadiene telomer obtained by the palladium catalyzed reaction of butadiene with acetic acid was used as a suitable block of the carbocycle.
