Density effect in d - d catalyzed fusion with ortho-and para-enriched deuterium

The ortho-para dependence of d-d fusion neutrons time spectra has been investigated using different target densities at similar temperatures. Even at the similar temperatures, the ortho-para effect on the fusion neutron yields in the liquid phase showed the opposite tendency from that in the gas phase. The result evidenced significant density dependence on resonant ddμ formation.     

Impurity effect on superconducting gap and pseudogap

Co substituted Bi2212 samples of Bi_2.1Sr_1.9Ca(Cu_1−xCo_x)O_8+δ (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and Tc = 85,71,52,35 K) were prepared, and their electronic density states were characterized by a low temperature STM. The experimental results revealed that superconducting gap-like features were rapidly destroyed, while pseudogap-like features were enhanced with increasing impurities, suggesting that the origin of the pseudogap is different from that of a superconducting gap. We suggested a two phase-like model to explain the behavior of a gap map and a gap distribution function. On the other hand, spatial gap and pseudogap inhomogeneity persisted in all Co concentrations. This indicates that the origin of inhomogeneity is not related to in-plane disorder or impurities.     

High-Tc superconductor near the S–I transition

We report on the density of states measurements of Bi2212 (Bi_2+xSr_xCaCu₂O_8+δ) near the superconductivity-insulator transition using a low temperature scanning tunneling microscope. We prepared highly underdoped Bi rich Bi2212 single crystals (T_c  32 K). The energy gap distribution did not provide an energy scale proportional to T_c. Averaged tunnel spectra with various doping levels were scaled into a single line if energy was normalized by their respective gap values. This indicated there was no crossover energy, which separates a pseudogap and a superconducting gap.     

SmI2-induced cyclization of optically active (E)- and (Z)-β-alkoxyvinyl sulfoxides with aldehydes

SmI₂-induced reaction of (E)-β-alkoxyvinyl (R)- and (S)-sulfoxides with aldehydes effected a highly stereoselective intramolecular cyclization to give 2,6-anti-2,3-cis- and 2,6-syn-2,3-trans-tetrahydropyran-3-ols, respectively. The reaction of (Z)-(R)-isomer gave 2,6-syn-2,3-cis-tetrahydropyran-3-ol and a ring-opened product, and that of (Z)-(S)-isomer yielded many products.     

Charge-transfer host complex with channel-like cavity using disubstituted-1,1′-bi-2-naphthol and benzylviologen

A novel charge-transfer (CT) host system is developed using CT complexes composed of rac-3,3′-dihydroxy-1,1′-bi-2-naphthol and 1,1′-dibenzyl-4,4′-bipyridinium dichloride. This CT host complex has a 1D channel-like cavity in which guest (MeOH and EtOH) molecules can be discharged and adsorbed. The color and DRS of the CT crystals change according to the presence of guest molecules in the host complex.     

LC Method for the Determination of Meropenem in Cerebrospinal Fluid: Application to Therapeutic Drug Monitoring

A simple, rapid and accurate liquid chromatography method using ultrafiltration to pretreat cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples was developed to determine meropenem concentrations in human CSF in clinical settings. Meropenem in CSF samples was stabilized by mixing with 1 mol L^?1 3-morpholinopropanesulfonic acid buffer (pH 7.0) (1:1). The mixture was transferred to a Nanosep 10 K centrifugal filter device; after centrifugation, the filtrate was subjected to reversed-phase LC and the eluate was monitored at 300 nm. The retention time for meropenem was 5.8 min. The calibration curve of meropenem in human CSF was linear over 0.05–50 μg mL^?1. The intra-day and inter-day precision was 0.27–5.66 % and accuracy was 99.0–109.5 %. The limit of detection was 0.01 μg mL^?1. This method was successfully applied to neurosurgical patients, showing that it is applicable for therapeutic drug monitoring in patients receiving meropenem.     

Detection of Biologically Important Anions in Aqueous Media by Dicationic Azaborines Bearing Ammonio or Phosphonio Groups

Not common sense, but specific : Dicationic azaborines bearing ammonio or phosphonio groups showed enhanced Lewis acidity as well as improved water solubility. Complexation between the azaborines and fluoride or cyanide ions was observed in aqueous media (see figure; DMSO= dimethyl sulfoxide).

     

Psychological and Antibacterial Effects of Footbath Using the Lindera umbellata Essential Oil

Lindera umbellata (Lu) essential oil primarily contains linalool and has relaxation properties. We investigated the psychological and antibacterial effects of footbath with Lu essential oil. The participants included 20 women without medical history and received two intervention plans: footbath without any essential oil and footbath using Lu essential oil. Next, questionnaires regarding impressions and mood states were provided for them to answer. In addition, their autonomic nervous system activity was measured, and the aerobic viable of count on the feet was determined. The high-frequency value reflecting the parasympathetic nervous system activity significantly increased after footbath using Lu essential oil. In the questionnaire about the mood states, the subscale scores of tension–anxiety, depression, fatigue, and confusion after intervention were lower than those before intervention regardless of the use of the essential oil. Conversely, the anger–hostility score decreased only in the group using Lu essential oil. Furthermore, the decrease in aerobic viable count after intervention was not significantly different between the two groups. Footbath using Lu essential oil increased the parasympathetic nervous system activity and relieved anger. Taken together, we suggest that footbath using Lu essential oil has a relaxation effect.     

Quasiparticle scattering induced by charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors probed by collective vortex pinning

Charge doping of iron-pnictide superconductors leads to collective pinning of flux vortices, whereas isovalent doping does not. Moreover, flux pinning in the charge-doped compounds is consistently described by the mean-free path fluctuations introduced by the dopant atoms, allowing for the extraction of the elastic quasiparticle scattering rate. The absence of scattering by dopant atoms in isovalently doped BaFe2(As(1-x)P(x))(2) is consistent with the observation of a linear temperature dependence of the low-temperature penetration depth in this material.
