Fast and Robust Nanocellulose Width Estimation Using Turbidimetry

The dimensions of nanocelluloses are important factors in controlling their material properties. The present study reports a fast and robust method for estimating the widths of individual nanocellulose particles based on the turbidities of their water dispersions. Seven types of nanocellulose, including short and rigid cellulose nanocrystals and long and flexible cellulose nanofibers, are prepared via different processes. Their widths are calculated from the respective turbidity plots of their water dispersions, based on the theory of light scattering by thin and long particles. The turbidity‐derived widths of the seven nanocelluloses range from 2 to 10 nm, and show good correlations with the thicknesses of nanocellulose particles spread on flat mica surfaces determined using atomic force microscopy.

     

Synthesis of 6-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-1,3,2,6-dioxathiazocine 2-oxides

Four 6-phenyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-1,3,2,6-dioxathiazocine 2-oxides were synthesized by the reaction of the corresponding N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)aniline with thionyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine.     

Ruthenium-catalyzed hydrophosphinylative cyclization of 1,6-diynes. Stereoselective synthesis of exocyclic 1,3-dienylphosphine oxides

The first catalytic synthesis of exocyclic 1,3-dienylphosphine oxides was achieved by the ruthenium-catalyzed selective hydrophosphinylative cyclization of 1,6-diynes. A plausible mechanism involving a ruthenacyclopentatriene intermediate is proposed on the basis of the DFT calculations of model ruthenium complexes.     

Total synthesis of unsaturated imine venom alkaloids of Costa Rican ant by way of Schmidt reaction via allyl/pentadienyl cations

Total synthesis of α,β-, and α,β,γ,δ-unsaturated imine ant venom alkaloids is described. The labile two conjugated imine alkaloids were synthesized by late stage intramolecular Schmidt reaction via allyl and pentadienyl cation intermediates.     

Mass spectral fragmentations of 6-aryl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-1,3,2,6-dioxathiazocine 2-Oxides

The mass spectral fragmentation of 4-, 5-, and 4,8-disubstituted derivatives of 6-aryl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-1,3,2,6-dioxathiazocine 2-oxides is reported.     

Precise measurement of hfs constant of the muonium substituted radical in cis-polyacetylene

The state of the muon in cis-polyacetylene was studied by muon spin rotation method under high transverse magnetic field. The most of the muons are found to be in muonium substituted radical state. The hyperfine coupling constant was determined to be 91 MHz with a line width of 10 MHz.     

Paper spray ionization with ion mobility spectrometry at ambient pressure

A paper spray ion source was combined with a drift tube operating at ambient pressure for mobility measurements of ions derived from pharmaceutical solutions. Paper spray ionization with solvent alone resulted in a mixture of ions convolved to a single peak with a reduced mobility of 2.19 cm²/Vs in the mobility spectrum. These were mass-identified principally as m/z 157, (MeOH)₂(HCOOH)₂H⁺ and m/z 129, (MeOH)₄(H₂O)H⁺ while pharmaceuticals with nitrogen bases formed MH⁺ product ions. The duration of response was governed by the volume of liquid added to the paper source and was limited by evaporation of solvent in gas at 58 °C venting the drift tube. Quantitative variation was attributed in part to morphologic changes in the tip of the paper spray source. This was associated with mass flow in the electrical discharge and not due alone to cycles of wetting and drying of the paper. Mobility spectra of chlorpromazine in urine, exhibited a single product ion peak and linear response was 30 to 500 ng with an estimated limit of detection of 1.5 ng. Ion flux could be prolonged by continuous addition of liquid and findings portend a combination of paper spray ionization IMS with paper chromatography.
