Amphotericin B dimers with bisamide linkage bearing powerful membrane-permeabilizing activity

[structure: see text] Covalently linked dimers of amphotericin B were prepared by cross-linking its carboxylic acid. Among these, a dimer with a linkage of 1,6-hexanediamine revealed potent hemolytic activity (EC50, 0.25 microM) while its N-acetyl derivative gave rise to large K+ ion flux in phosphatidylcholine liposomes, regardless of the presence or absence of sterols, suggesting that the dimers may serve as a tool for elucidating the structure of the ion channel assemblage formed by amphotericin B.     

Total synthesis of ecteinascidin 743

The total synthesis of ecteinascidin 743 (1), an extremely potent antitumor agent, has been accomplished. The synthesis features Ugi's 4CC reaction, intramolecular Heck reaction, phenol-aldehyde cyclization, and acid-induced intramolecular sulfide formation.     

Chilling resistances of isolates of Pythium ultimum var. ultimum from the Arctic and Temperate Zones

Chilling resistances in moss pathogenic fungi, Pythium ultimum var. ultimum, from Longyearbyen, Svalbard (78 degree N, 15 degree E), located in the Arctic Zone and in the same isolates from Temperate Zone, were determined. Both strains had similar optimum growth temperatures. However, the strains from Svalbard could grow and survive at 0 - 5 degrees C. In addition, chilling treatment induced irregular mycelial morphology in the Arctic isolates. On the other hand, the isolates from Japan did not grow at temperatures below 5C and were destroyed after chilling stress (0 degree C for 3 days or at 4 degrees C for 1 week). The results suggested that isolates from Svalbard highly adapted to the severe spring condition in Polar environments.     

Improved lattice action for Wilson fermions

An improved lattice action for gauge theories with Wilson fermions is presented.     

The electronic viewpoint on the morphology of the microclusters

Although the five-fold symmetry conflicts with the crystalline long range order, it can appear in some finite systems. In order to search for such possibility in the microclusters in the small size limit and to clarify the roles of the electrons in the morphology, the electronic states are studied in the tight binding scheme. The single electron spectra coming from thes- andp-atomic orbitals are derived for three types of the 13-atom clusters; with the fcc-like configuration, the hcp-like and the icosahedral. If the transfer integral between two surface atoms is put equal to that between the central and a surface atom in the icosahedral case, this configuration has the lowest total electronic energy in many cases studied, but not always. The fact that a surface atom has larger number of neighbours in the icosahedral configuration is surely of great advantage. Convergence of the arithmetic-geometric mean procedure for the complex variables and the calculation of the complete elliptic integrals with complex modulus

The convergence of the arithmetic-geometric mean procedure is checked for complex variables. The procedure is shown to be useful for the evaluation of the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds with complex modulus. It is suggested that the procedure will be useful also for the numerical calculation of the elliptic integrals and the Jacobian elliptic functions with complex modulus in general.     

Stroboscopic phase portrait and strange attractors

External periodic modulation of a nonlinear oscillator may lead to a chaotic output behaviour. This phenomenon is attributed to the existence of a strange attractor, which embodies essentially a folding motion as is met in Bernoulli shift or the Baker's transformation.     

On the miscibility gap in liquid bismuth-bismuth tribromide system

We have determined the location of the miscibility gap in liquid Bi-BiBr₃ system in the concentration-temperature, x?T, plane from the measurement of the electrical conductivity. The measurements have been done in the concentration range between 30.5 and 92.5 mol.% Bi and in the temperature range between 300 and 600°C. It is found that the temperature dependence of the conductivity of the mixture changes near the retrograde solubility region.     

Vector meson pole dominance in Jψ decays into mesons

The validity of the assumption that $\text{J}\text{ψ}$ decays into mesons proceed via ω, φ and ?⁰ poles followed by cascade decays is examined. $\text{Λ(}\text{J}\text{ψ}\text{→}\text{B}\text{π)}$ is well reproduced by using $\text{Λ(}\text{J}\text{ψ}\text{→ ?π), Λ(ω → ?π), Λ(}\text{B}\text{→ ωπ)}$ and the B → ωπ helicity structure. The structure of OZI-violating $\text{J}\text{ψ}\text{?}\text{V}{}^0$ transitions including the electromagnetic contribution is examined, and compared with the data on inclusive $\text{J}\text{ψ}$ decay.
