New alkali doped pillared carbon materials designed to achieve practical reversible hydrogen storage for transportation

We propose a new generation of materials to maximize reversible H2 storage at room temperature and modest pressures (<20 bars). We test these materials using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations with a first-principles-derived force field and find that the Li pillared graphene sheet system can take up 6.5 mass% of H2 (a density of 62.9 kg/m(3) at 20 bars and room temperature. This satisfies the DOE (Department of Energy) target of hydrogen-storage materials for transportation. We also suggest ways to synthesize these systems. In addition we show that Li-doped pillared single-wall nanotubes can lead to a hydrogen-storage capacity of 6.0 mass% and 61.7 kg/m(3) at 50 bars and room temperature storage, which is close to the DOE target.

Atomistic configurations and energetics of crack extension in silicon

We report the first atomistic determination of the minimum energy path for a series of bond ruptures to advance a crack front. Saddle-point configurations on (111) cleavage planes in Si reveal a steplike distribution of atomic displacements, implying a kink mechanism which is known to control dislocation mobility. Manifestations of lattice trapping and directional cleavage anisotropy are further elucidated.     

Fluorinated imidazoles as proton carriers for water-free fuel cell membranes

We propose an alternative new material (2,4,5-trifluoroimidazole impregnated Nafion) for use as a high-temperature, water-free membrane for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. This material has been tested computationally using molecular dynamics and quantum mechanics techniques, leading to an estimated conductivity of approximately 0.06 S/cm at 177 degrees C. This material overcomes the weakness of the imidazole-impregnated membranes, i.e., the poisoning of the Pt electrode. We find that 2,4,5-trifluoroimidazole binds weakly to platinum surfaces, so poisoning is not expected.     

Tensegrity: construction of rigid DNA triangles with flexible four-arm DNA junctions

A tensegrity strategy has been explored to construct a rigid geometrical structure (triangles) from flexible DNA four-arm junctions. The resulting DNA triangles could self-assemble into 1D and 2D arrays. This tensegrity strategy is expected to play an important role in the design of biomimetic nanomaterials.     

Ultraslow bright and dark optical solitons in a cold three-state medium

We show the formation of ultraslow bright and dark optical solitons in a lifetime-broadened three-state atomic system under Raman excitation. We also discuss why such ultraslow optical solitons may not exist under the conditions of the usual electromagnetically induced transparency configuration where zero one- and two-photon detunings are required.     

Self-starting passive harmonic mode-locked femtosecond Yb3+-doped fiber laser at 1030 nm

We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, a self-starting passive harmonic mode-locked femtosecond Yb3+-doped fiber laser with a scalable repetition rate of up to 585 MHz and >45 dB of supermode suppression. Pulse-to-pulse jitter of approximately 14 ps is measured by optical cross correlation at the ninth harmonic, and radiofrequency (RF) spectrum measurements show that certain correlations exist between pulses in harmonic mode. Our results suggest that one of the proposed passive harmonic mode-locking mechanisms may be dominant for this laser.     

Fluorometabolite biosynthesis and the fluorinase from Streptomyces cattleya

This review outlines the recent developments in uncovering the enzymes and intermediates involved in fluorometabolite biosyntheses in the bacterium Streptomyces cattleya. A particular emphasis is placed on the purification and characterisation of the fluorinase, the C-F bond forming enzyme which initiates the biosynthesis. Nature has hardly developed a biochemistry around fluorine, yet fluorinated organics are important commercial entities, therefore a biotransformation from inorganic to organic fluorine is novel and of contemporary interest.
