Understanding jet scaling and jet vetos in Higgs searches

Jet counting and jet vetos are crucial analysis tools for many LHC searches. We can understand their properties from the distribution of the exclusive number of jets. LHC processes tend to show either a distinct staircase scaling or a Poisson scaling, depending on kinematic cuts. We illustrate our approach in a detailed study of jets in weak boson fusion Higgs production.     

Bose-fermi mixtures in a three-dimensional optical lattice

We have studied mixtures of fermionic (40)K and bosonic (87)Rb quantum gases in a three-dimensional optical lattice. We observe that an increasing admixture of the fermionic species diminishes the phase coherence of the bosonic atoms as measured by studying both the visibility of the matter wave interference pattern and the coherence length of the bosons. Moreover, we find that the attractive interactions between bosons and fermions lead to an increase of the boson density in the lattice which we measure by studying three-body recombination in the lattice. In our data, we do not observe three-body loss of the fermionic atoms. An analysis of the thermodynamics of a noninteracting Bose-Fermi mixture in the lattice suggests a mechanism for sympathetic cooling of the fermions in the lattice.     

Molecules of fermionic atoms in an optical lattice

We create molecules from fermionic atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice using a Feshbach resonance. In the limit of low tunneling, the individual wells can be regarded as independent three-dimensional harmonic oscillators. The measured binding energies for varying scattering length agree excellently with the theoretical prediction for two interacting atoms in a harmonic oscillator. We demonstrate that the formation of molecules can be used to measure the occupancy of the lattice and perform thermometry.     

Synthesis of 3H-labeled Efomycine M

For in-depth characterization as a putative pan-selectin antagonist 3H-labeled Efomycine M was synthesized starting from the natural product derived from Elaiophyline.     

Human carbonic anhydrase II as a host for piano-stool complexes bearing a sulfonamide anchor

d(6)-piano-stool complexes bearing an arylsulfonamide anchor display sub-micromolar affinity towards human Carbonic Anhydrase II (hCA II). The 1.3 ? resolution X-ray crystal structure of [(η(6)-C(6)Me(6))Ru(bispy 3)Cl](+)? hCA II highlights the nature of the host-guest interactions.     

Curvature-direction measures of self-similar sets

We obtain fractal Lipschitz–Killing curvature-direction measures for a large class of self-similar sets $F$ in $\mathbb{R }^{d}$ . Such measures jointly describe the distribution of normal vectors and localize curvature by analogues of the higher order mean curvatures of differentiable sub-manifolds. They decouple as independent products of the unit Hausdorff measure on $F$ and a self-similar fibre measure on the sphere, which can be computed by an integral formula. The corresponding local density approach uses an ergodic dynamical system formed by extending the code space shift by a subgroup of the orthogonal group. We then give a remarkably simple proof for the resulting measure version under minimal assumptions.
