We examine the usefulness of a two-dimensional self-consistent mean-field theory for predicting polymer-induced forces between a finite object and a surface. The predictions are compared with scaling results for the compression of a single, end-grafted chain by a disk and for the compression of a brush with an athermal wall. For the former, the mean-field predictions agree with scaling theory and, in addition, provide the necessary prefactor in the scaling expressions for the Helmholtz potential and force of compression. For the brush, the mean-field results agree with the Alexander-de Gennes scaling result at moderate compressions and also provide an analytical expression for the force without any unknown parameters. We also use the mean-field theory to examine the interaction of a model bacterium with a planar substrate and show that steric interactions due to a single polymer chain alone can dominate van der Waals attraction under typical practical conditions and thus prevent bacterial adhesion to the surface.  相似文献

We report the excitation by flexural acoustic waves of an individual cladding mode in a single-mode photonic crystal fiber. The propagation constant and the field distributions of the mode have been investigated by use of this technique. CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) were embedded in films of cellulose triacetate (CTA) to give clear films with the broad absorbance and well-defined, size-tunable fluorescence characteristic of QDs. The relative quantum yields of the QDs in polymer were compared to that of the initial QDs dispersed in toluene. Alkaline hydrolysis of the film surfaces to regenerated cellulose rendered the previously hydrophobic CTA film surfaces hydrophilic and compatible with aqueous papermaking. Films containing combinations of different sized QDs gave more complex emission patterns. Small pieces of fluorescent films were added to pulp slurries and incorporated into laboratory paper sheets through hydrogen bonding between the regenerated cellulose film surfaces and cellulosic pulp fibers. The film system (cellulose ester bulk/cellulose surface) can be used to incorporate hydrophobic particles or molecules compatible with solutions of cellulosic polymers into paper products at both high and low loadings. QDs in paper may prove useful for security applications, such as sheets with unique optical signatures.  相似文献

The molecules of the title compounds, C16H15NOS2, (I), and C16H13Br2NOS2, (II), are E,E‐isomers and consist of an extensive conjugated system, which determines their molecular geometries. Compound (I) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c. It has one thiophene ring disordered over two positions, with a minor component contribution of 0.100 (3). Compound (II) crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Pca21 with two independent molecules in the unit cell. These molecules are related by a noncrystallographic pseudo‐inversion center and possess very similar geometries. The crystal packings of (I) and (II) have a topologically common structural motif, viz. stacks along the b axis, in which the molecules are bound by weak C—H...O hydrogen bonds. The noncentrosymmetric packing of (II) is governed by attractive intermolecular Br...Br and Br...N interactions, which are also responsible for the very high density of (II) (1.861 Mg m−3).  相似文献

Synthesis of a series of 2-substituted benzimidazoles was carried out for screening anti-inflammatory activities. 2-(N-benzylpyrrolyl)-benzimidazoles 9a-k were synthesized from N-benzyl-2-pyrrole carboxylic acids 8a-d and 4-substituted-1,2-phenylenediamines by cyclocondensation utilizing polyphosphoric acid (PPA) as condensing agent. The N-benzyl-2-pyrrole carboxylic acids were prepared by standard method of N-benzylation of 2-pyrrole carboxylate using NaH/DMF and appropriately substituted benzyl halides followed by alkaline hydrolysis.  相似文献

A conformational analysis of a stereochemically complete set of peptide analogues based on a cis-enediol unit is presented. The cis-enediol unit, which can replace a two or a three amino acid segment of a peptide, contains two "side chains", four asymmetrical carbon atoms, and six free dihedral angles. To determine the accessible conformational space, the molecules are divided into three fragments, each containing two free dihedral angles. The energy surfaces are computed for all dihedral angle values, and the possible conformations of the cis-enediol unit analogues are built using all combinations of the surface minima. Such a "build-up" procedure, which is very fast, is able to reproduce 75% of the minima obtained from a full dihedral angle exploration of the conformational space. The cis-enediol unit minima are compared with the corresponding di- and tripeptide minima; all peptide minima can be closely matched by a cis-enediol unit minimum of low energy (less than 2.2 kcal/mol above the lowest energy conformer). However, there are low energy minima of the cis-enediol unit that have no corresponding minima in peptides. The results are shown to depend strongly on the chirality of the analogues. The ability of each of the stereoisomers to mimic natural peptides, evaluated by the present approach, is correlated with its experimental activity in a renin inhibition assay.  相似文献

Combinations of the five polyketide synthase (PKS) genes for biosynthesis of tylosin in Streptomyces fradiae (tylG), spiramycin in Streptomyces ambofaciens (srmG), or chalcomycin in Streptomyces bikiniensis (chmG) were expressed in engineered hosts derived from a tylosin-producing strain of S. fradiae. Surprisingly efficient synthesis of compounds predicted from the expressed hybrid PKS was obtained. The post-PKS tailoring enzymes of tylosin biosynthesis acted efficiently on the hybrid intermediates with the exception of TylH-catalyzed hydroxylation of the methyl group at C14, which was efficient if C4 bore a methyl group, but inefficient if a methoxyl was present. Moreover, for some compounds, oxidation of the C6 ethyl side chain to an unprecedented carboxylic acid was observed. By also expressing chmH, a homolog of tylH from the chalcomycin gene cluster, efficient hydroxylation of the 14-methyl group was restored.  相似文献

Peptide sequences that can discriminate between gold facets under aqueous conditions offer a promising route to control the growth and organisation of biomimetically-synthesised gold nanoparticles. Knowledge of the interplay between sequence, conformations and interfacial properties is essential for predictable manipulation of these biointerfaces, but the structural connections between a given peptide sequence and its binding affinity remain unclear, impeding practical advances in the field. These structural insights, at atomic-scale resolution, are not easily accessed with experimental approaches, but can be delivered via molecular simulation. A current unmet challenge lies in forging links between predicted adsorption free energies derived from enhanced sampling simulations with the conformational ensemble of the peptide and the water structure at the surface. To meet this challenge, here we use an in situ combination of Replica Exchange with Solute Tempering with Metadynamics simulations to predict the adsorption free energy of a gold-binding peptide sequence, AuBP1, at the aqueous Au(111), Au(100)(1 × 1) and Au(100)(5 × 1) interfaces. We find adsorption to the Au(111) surface is stronger than to Au(100), irrespective of the reconstruction status of the latter. Our predicted free energies agree with experiment, and correlate with trends in interfacial water structuring. For gold, surface hydration is predicted as a chief determining factor in peptide–surface recognition. Our findings can be used to suggest how shaped seed-nanocrystals of Au, in partnership with AuBP1, could be used to control AuNP nanoparticle morphology.  相似文献
