We study the thermal fluctuations of an optically confined probe particle, suspended in an aging colloidal suspension, as the suspension transforms from a viscous liquid into an elastic glass. The micron-sized bead forms a harmonic oscillator. By monitoring the equal-time fluctuations of the tracer, at two different laser powers we determine the temperature of the oscillator, T(o). In the ergodic liquid the temperatures of the oscillator and its environment are equal, while in contrast, in a nonequilibrium glassy phase we find that T(o) substantially exceeds the bath temperature.  相似文献

Although laser surgery has been widely advocated for use in the treatment of vocal fold papilloma because it does not incur bleeding, it has been questioned for use in treating Reinke's edema due to the possibility of heat dispersion to normal surrounding tissue and of scarring. We present a series of 8 cases in which laser surgery was the method of treatment for bilateral Reinke's edema. In each case, voice therapy was selected as the initial treatment; laser surgery was performed following voice therapy. Prior to and following surgery, videostroboscopic examinations were performed on the subjects. Only 4 subjects were available for assessment at the 1-month postoperative period. From the audio track of the videotape, the speaking fundamental frequency, perturbation measures for the vowel /i/, and noise-to-harmonic ratio of a completely voiced sentence were obtained. From the videostroboscopic recordings, the symmetry of the vocal folds, the presence or absence of the mucosal wave and the glottic closure pattern, prior to and after surgery, were judged independently by 3 examiners. The fundamental frequencies approximated the normal male and female ranges for those subjects seen 1 month after surgery. In addition, the noise-to-harmonic ratio and the relative average perturbation improved. Stroboscopy revealed irregularities in the symmetry of vocal folds, mucosal wave, and glottic closure 1 month after surgery.  相似文献

The apparent activation enthalpies, ΔH, for externally sensitized mesolytic fragmentations in benzophenone-dithiane adducts were obtained in variable temperature photolyses and compared with DFT activation barriers calculated for β-scission in the corresponding oxygen-centered radicals. The results of these experimental and theoretical studies further support the mechanism in which deprotonation of the hydroxy-group, in the transient cation radical, is coupled with intramolecular electron transfer furnishing the O-centered radical, which subsequently fragments. The quantum yields of fragmentation increase for higher alkyl substituted dithiane adducts.  相似文献

The syntheses of stereodiverse libraries of 12 and 19 are reported, where each asterisk represents an independently varied stereocenter. These scaffolds provide additional templates for investigations of geometric diversity in library syntheses. Libraries of these N-Fmoc-amino acids were further functionalized by incorporation into a peptide sequence, demonstrating the utility of 12 and 19 as building blocks for diversity oriented synthesis.  相似文献

Constituent long-chain fatty acids and alcohols from the meibomian secretions of the rat were examined as trimethylsilyl (TMS) and methyl ester-TMS derivatives by capillary gas chromatography and by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The positions of double bonds and methyl branch points were determined by the mass spectra of picolinyl esters and nicotinates for long-chain fatty acids and alcohols, respectively. Fatty acids had chain lengths from C12 to C34 and were of the straight-chain iso, anteiso and monounsaturated types. The unsaturated acids had double bonds in the omega-7 and omega-9 positions. The alcohols had corresponding structures. In common with the constituent acids and alcohols of other meibomian secretions, the chain lengths of the constituents showed a biphasic distribution with maxima around C16-C18 and C25-C27. The profile was qualitatively similar to that obtained from human meibomian secretion but with some differences in the relative proportions of certain acids and alcohols.  相似文献

The vibrational structure of native anchoring tryptophan (Trp) and tyrosine residues in an integral membrane protein, bacterial outer membrane protein A (OmpA), have been investigated using UV resonance Raman (UVRR) spectroscopy for the first time. Spectra of native OmpA, a single-Trp mutant, and a Trp-less mutant were recorded in folded and unfolded states, and reveal significant changes in tryptophan structure and local environment. Salient alterations upon folding include loss of hydrogen-bonding character of indole N1H, evidenced by a shift in W17 frequency from 874 and 878 cm(-1), and growth in hydrophobicity of the local tryptophan environment, supported by increase in the ratio I1361/I1340. In addition to these site-specific changes in a single tryptophan residue, modification of the vibrational structure of the remaining native tryptophan and tyrosine amino acids is also evident. Finally, the UVRR data presented here indicate that the structures of OmpA folded in vesicle and folded in detergent may differ, and provide important foundations for ongoing studies of membrane protein folding.  相似文献

Fully protected 3,5-difluorotyrosine (F2Y), Fmoc-F2Y(tBu)-OH, is efficiently prepared by a chemoenzymatic process and incorporated into individual peptides and combinatorial peptide libraries. The F2Y-containing peptides display kinetic properties toward protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) similar to their corresponding tyrosine-containing counterparts but are resistant to tyrosinase action. Bio-based flame retardant (FR) resins typically exhibit diminished mechanical properties compared with their petroleum-based counterparts. Recent experiments identified a promising FR phosphorus-bearing vanillin-based epoxy resin, EP2, that exhibited superior thermomechanical properties compared to that of petroleum-based diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. However, the structure/property relationships of such phosphorus-containing bio-based resins are relatively under-explored and cannot be resolved via experiments alone. Here, molecular simulations are used to explore these relationships for a resin comprising EP2 cured with 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane. The predicted thermomechanical properties are consistent with experimental observations, and critically, the structural analysis reveals the importance of the pendant phosphite group in the monomer as central to maintaining extensive hydrogen-bonding networks, giving rise to the excellent Young's modulus. This work provides the foundation for knowledge-based strategies to systematically improve the structure/property relationships in FR bio-based epoxy resins.  相似文献
