Novel mesophases in fluorine substituted banana-shaped mesogens

A new homologous series of achiral banana-shaped mesogens ('Dn') has been synthesized and studied by the classical techniques (optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, miscibility studies and electro-optic investigations). The short homologues (D6-D8) exhibit a two-dimensional phase 'B1_x' different from a B1 phase with a rectangular lattice. The longer homologues (D9-D14) present a mesophase which displays the defects of the B7 phase of the PIMB-NO₂ compounds. Nevertheless the D9-D14 mesophase is not miscible with the B7 phase, and contrary to B7, exhibits a bistable behaviour ('ferroelectric' type) suggesting at least a B7 variant.     

Improvement of Regio-Specific Production of Myricetin-3-O-α-l-Rhamnoside in Engineered Escherichia coli

Myricetin is an important flavonol whose medically important properties include activities as an antioxidant, anticarcinogen, and antimutagen. The solubility, stability, and other biological properties of the compounds can be enhanced by conjugating aglycon with sugar moieties. The type of sugar moiety also plays a significant role in the biological and physical properties of the natural product glycosides. Reconstructed Escherichia coli containing thymidine diphosphate-α-l-rhamnose sugar gene cassette and Arabidopsis-derived glycosyltransferase were used for rhamnosylation of myricetin. Myricetin (100 μM) was exogenously supplemented to induced cultures of engineered E. coli. The formation of target product—myricetin-3-O-α-l-rhamnoside—was confirmed by chromatographic and NMR analyses. The yield of product was improved by using various mutants and methylated cyclodextrin as a molecular carrier for myricetin in combination with E. coli M3G3. The maximal yield of product is 55.6 μM (3.31-fold higher than the control E. coli MG3) and shows 55.6 % bioconversion of substrate under optimized conditions.     

Novel C1-symmetric dibenzophosphole ligands: application in hydroformylation reactions

A new family of non-symmetrical disubstituted dibenzophospholes possessing different steric and electronic effects have been synthesized and characterized. Their preliminary evaluation in rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation reactions is presented.     

A rapid way to synthesize Brønsted acidic ionic liquid and its application as an efficient catalyst for esterification

A novel and time-saving method to prepare a Brønsted acidic ionic liquid, 1-carboxymethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate ([CMI][HSO₄]), in high yield and purity was performed under microwave irradiation. The ionic liquid showed an incomparable catalytic efficiency in the microwave-accelerated esterification of arenecarboxylic acids. Moreover, its ability of being recovered and reused many times without loss of activity has made [CMI][HSO₄] more favorable from the viewpoint of green chemistry.

Two new cycloartanes from the leaves of Combretum quadrangulare growing in Vietnam and their biological activities

Two new cycloartanes, combretanones G and H (1 and 2), were isolated from the leaves of Combretum quadrangulare. Their structures were elucidated by applying a set of spectroscopic methods, while their relative configurations were determined using DFT-NMR chemical shift calculations and subsequent assignment of DP4 probabilities. Compounds 1 and 2 are C-23/C-24 stereoisomers of the previously-reported euphonerin E. Both exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines. Compound 2 was shown to be a potent antiparasitic. Our results confirm the traditional medicinal uses of Combretum quadrangulare in Vietnam.     

Hydrogen Peroxide Detection Using Prussian Blue-modified 3D Pyrolytic Carbon Microelectrodes

A highly sensitive amperometric Prussian blue-based hydrogen peroxide sensor was developed using 3D pyrolytic carbon microelectrodes. A 3D printed multielectrode electrochemical cell enabled simultaneous highly reproducible Prussian blue modification on multiple carbon electrodes. The effect of oxygen plasma pre-treatment and deposition time on Prussian blue electrodeposition was studied. The amperometric response of 2D and 3D sensors to the addition of hydrogen peroxide in μM and sub-μM concentrations in phosphate buffer was investigated. A high sensitivity comparable to flow injection systems and a detection limit of 0.16 μM was demonstrated with 3D pyrolytic carbon microelectrodes at stirred batch condition     

Spectral probing of carrier traps in Si–Ge alloy nanocrystals

Photogenerated carriers in Si–Ge alloy nanocrystals (NCs) prepared by co‐sputtering method were investigated by mean of transient induced absorption. The carrier relaxation features multiple components, with three decay life times of τ ≈ 600 fs, 12 ps, and 15 ns, established for Si_0.2Ge_0.8 alloy NCs of a mean crystal size of 9 nm and standard deviation of 3 nm. Deep carrier traps, identified at the boundary between the NCs and the SiO₂ host with the ionization energy of about 1 eV, are characterized by a long‐range Coulombic potential. These are responsible for rapid depletion of free carrier population within a few picoseconds after the excitation, which explains the low emissivity of the investigated materials, and also sheds light on the generally low luminescence of Si/Ge and Ge NCs.
