Differential equations on closed subsets of a probabilistic normed space

This paper is concerned with the problem of existence of solutions to the initial value problemu′(t) = A(t,u(t)), u(a) = z in a probabilistic normed space, whereA : [a, b) × D → E is continuous,D is a closed subset of a probabilistic normed spaceE, andz ? D. With a dissipative type condition onA, we estabilish sufficient conditions for this initial value problem to have a solution.     

Quantum-theoretical treatment of motions of ions in ion cyclotron resonance cells

A quantum-mechanical treatment of the power absorption of ICR ions based on a minimized wavepacket-approach is presented. With the aid of minimum wavepackets constructed using the exact wavefunctions for the ion motions in a homogeneous magnetic field, the power absorption of the ions in cyclotron resonance has been treated within the framework of the linear response theory. The result agrees with that obtained according to the projection-operator formalism.     

One-step extension of the Bergman shift

In this paper we answer a question of Curto and Fialkow: there exists a quadratically hyponormal weighted shift which is not positively quadratically hyponormal.

     

Proton-irradiation effect on the luminescence of the MEH-PPV conjugated polymer

We report proton-irradiation effect on luminescence in the MEH-PPV conjugated polymer. While the luminescence was severely weakened by the low-energy irradiation with a high dosage, it was affected only weakly by the high-energy irradiation with a low dosage. The electroluminescence was affected by the irradiation more severely than the photoluminescence was, preserving the external quantum efficiency. While the luminescence spectrum of the severely damaged polymer was broadened with a blue-shift, a weak damage resulted only in a decrease in the luminescence intensity apparently preserving the spectral shape. The change in the luminescence spectra may be explained by chain conformational disorders as well as chain scission induced by the irradiation.     

On some notions of good reduction for endomorphisms of the projective line

Let Φ be an endomorphism of ${\mathbb{P}^1_{\overline{\mathbb{Q}}}}$ , the projective line over the algebraic closure of ${\mathbb{Q}}$ , of degree ≥ 2 defined over a number field K. Let v be a non-archimedean valuation of K. We say that Φ has critically good reduction at v if any pair of distinct ramification points of Φ do not collide under reduction modulo v and the same holds also for any pair of branch points. We say that Φ has simple good reduction at v if the map Φ _v , the reduction of Φ modulo v, has the same degree of Φ. We prove that if Φ has critically good reduction at v and the reduction map Φ _v is separable, then Φ has simple good reduction at v.     

On a new continuous selection and its applications

In this paper, we shall prove a new continuous selection theorem, and as applications, we shall prove a generalization of the Debreu—Gale—Nikaido theorem and a new intersection theorem     

Synthesis of new julolidine dyes having bithiophene derivatives for solar cell

Three novel organic dyes containing julolidine and bithiophene derivatives were synthesized. Nanocrystalline TiO₂ dye-sensitized solar cells were fabricated using these dyes. A solar-to-electric conversion efficiency of 2.95% is achieved with JK-14. We found that the power conversion efficiency was shown to be quite sensitive to the structural variations of bridging bithiophene moiety.     

Photophysical properties and energy transfer pathway of Er(III) complexes with Pt-porphyrin and terpyridine ligands

The photophysical properties of Er(III) complexes coordinated with platinum[5,10,15-triphenyl-20-(4-carboxyphenyl)-porphyrin] (PtP) and terpyridine (tpy) ligands in organic solution were investigated. The Er(III) complex emitted sensitized near-IR (NIR) luminescence when the PtP ligands were excited under deoxygenated conditions. The quantum yield (PhiLn) of the sensitized luminescence was 0.015%, as evaluated from luminescence lifetime. The photophysical studies and theoretical calculations suggest that the F?rster resonance mechanism is very suitable for the energy transfer from PtP to the Er(III) ion and occurred through the first triplet excited state of PtP. The 12.3% energy transfer from the triplet state to the 4F9/2 and 4I9/2 states of Er(III) occurred with a rate distribution of 3.36x10(5) and 6.67x10(4) s(-1), respectively. In addition, the observed triplet quantum yield of the PtP ligand in [Ln(PtP)3(tpy)] proved that the energy transfer from the singlet excited state of the PtP ligand to the Er(III) ion did not take place.     

Regulation of cell growth by fatty acid-CoA ligase 4 in human hepatocellular carcinoma cells

Fatty acid-CoA ligase 4 (FACL4) is a central enzyme controlling the unesterified free arachidonic acid (AA) level in cells and the free AA is known to induce apoptosis. We have recently reported that expression of FACL4 is upregulated in about 40% of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and 50% of HCC cell lines, suggesting that FACL4 may be involved in liver carcinogenesis. In this study, we investigated whether HCC cell growth is regulated by FACL4. Immunoblot analysis showed that SNU 398 cells express very low or no detectable level of FACL4. We, therefore, transfected the SNU 398 cells with FACL4 expression vector, and clones expressing FACL4 were pooled and analyzed. We found that forced expression of FACL4 in SNU 398 promotes the growth of cells. In addition, we observed that triacsin C, a FACL4 inhibitor, inhibits the growth of Hep 3B cell line which expresses high level of endogenous FACL4. We also found that the triacsin C-mediated growth inhibition in Hep 3B cells results from the induction of apoptosis with evidence of Bcl-2 reduction. Altogether, our data show that FACL4 affects HCC cell growth and suggest that modulation of FACL4 expression/activity is an approach for treatment of HCC.
