10 GHz, 2.4 ps pulse generation using a single-stage dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator

This Letter reports on picosecond pulse generation at a repetition of 10 GHz by using a single-stage electro-optic LiNbO(3) Mach-Zehnder modulator, stressing the simplicity of its setup. It is analytically and experimentally proved that dual-arm modulation with in-phase sinusoidal signals having slightly different amplitudes generated a highly coherent optical comb with a great spectral flatness and a parabolic phase relationship in its spectrum. The generated comb was Fourier synthesized and shaped into an ultrashort pulse train with an optical bandpass filter and a dispersive fiber. The pulse source was highly stable, exhibiting an ultralow timing jitter of less than 130 fs.     

NMR evidence for higher-order multipole order parameters in NpO2

We report a microscopic investigation of multipolar order parameters in the ordered state of NpO2 conducted via 17O NMR on a single crystal. From the angular dependence of hyperfine fields at 17O nuclei, we have obtained clear evidence for the appearance of field-induced antiferro-octupolar as well as field-induced antiferro-dipolar moments below T0 = 26 K. We have also observed oscillatory spin-echo decay, which is well understood in terms of small electric field gradients created by antiferro-quadrupolar ordering. This reveals that the quadrupolar order parameter is directly observable by means of NMR. The present NMR studies provide definitive support for a proposed longitudinal triple-q type octupolar-quadrupolar ordering model for NpO2.     

Effects of pressure and temperature on the solubility of monosodium L-glutamate monohydrate in water

Abstract

The solubility of monosodium L-glutamate monohydrate (MSG.H₂O) in water was measured at pressures in the range of 0.10-300MPa and 298.15K. The density of MSG solution at high concentrations and heat of solution at saturated concentration were also measured at atmospheric pressure. The solubility, m_s, increased with increasing pressure and the pressure coefficient, Θ_p, [?(? In m_s,? p)_T] at 0.10 MPa was (2.0 ± 0.1) × 10-¹⁰Pa-1. It agrees well with (2.1 ±0.2)× 10-¹⁰ Pa-¹ thermodynamically estimated using the partial molar volume, the activity coefficient of the solute in solution, and the molar volume of the crystal. The excellent agreement at 0.10MPa gives us confidence in the solubility data at higher pressures. The heat of solution data and other pertinent values were used to calculate the temperature coefficient of solubility, Θ_T [? (? In m_s/?(1/T))_p], by a thermodynamic equality. The resulting Θ_T compares well with the data directly measured by Ogawa.     

A variant of Shelah's characterization of Strong Chang's Conjecture

Shelah considered a certain version of Strong Chang's Conjecture which we denote , and proved that it is equivalent to several statements, including the assertion that Namba forcing is semiproper. We introduce an apparently weaker version, denoted , and prove an analogous characterization of it. In particular, is equivalent to the assertion that the the Friedman‐Krueger poset is semiproper. This strengthens and sharpens results by Cox and sheds some light on problems posed by Usuba, Torres‐Perez and Wu.     

Application of Novel Glycosides Prepared with Odorless Benzenethiols in Glycosylation Reaction

p‐Dodecylbenzenethiol (1) and p‐octyloxybenzenethiol (2) were synthesized as new odorless benzenethiols. Moreover, preparation of novel 1‐thioglycosides using 1 and 2 as well as their application for glycosylation reactions was performed. As a result, it was found that these 1‐thio‐glycosides were excellent glycosyl donors, and especially 2‐thio‐sialoside prepared from 1 and 2 afforded the best result to date in terms of α‐ and β‐selectivity in the sialylation where only the single C‐3 hydroxyl group of acceptor D‐galactopyranoside was free. All procedures from the preparation of thioglycosides to glycosylation reaction were attainable under completely odorless conditions.     

The Sixth Painlevé Equation as Similarity Reduction of $${\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}_3}$$ Generalized Drinfel’d–Sokolov Hierarchy

Scaling symmetry of -type Drinfel’d–Sokolov hierarchy is investigated. Applying similarity reduction to the hierarchy, one can obtain the Schlesinger equation with (n + 1) regular singularities. Especially in the case of n = 3, the hierarchy contains the three-wave resonant system and the similarity reduction gives the generic case of the Painlevé VI equation. We also discuss Weyl group symmetry of the hierarchy.      

Loop corrections to the heterotic string effective lagrangian

We derive string-loop corrections (torus topology) to the quartic curvature term in the low-energy effective lagrangian for the heterotic string theory. The one-loop correction is found to give the relative weight of two tensor structures different from the tree level.
