Crystal structure and high-pressure properties of γ-Mo2N determined by neutron powder diffraction and X-ray diffraction

We prepared samples of cubic γ-MoN_x (x∼0.5) by high-pressure-high-temperature synthesis. N atom site occupancies within the defect rock salt structure were determined from time-of-flight neutron diffraction and powder X-ray diffraction data by Rietveld analysis. The results show that N atoms occupy only octahedral sites within the structure. The semi-metallic compound is a superconductor, with determined by SQUID magnetometry. The compressibility of the material was determined by synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements at high pressure in the diamond anvil cell. The vibrational density of states was studied by Raman scattering spectroscopy.     

Defect-effects on the photoluminescence of ZrO2 bulk,film and nanocrystals

The photoluminescence (PL) properties of ZrO₂ have been measured at different temperatures between 7 and 300 K, using various kinds of ZrO₂ specimens: bulk crystal melt-grown by a large solar furnace, thermally oxidized zirconium plate (ZrO₂ film crystal on Zr ) and nanocrystals (surface area: 35–45m²/g, diameter: 20–30 nm). The results clarify the deep and shallow energy level structures in the energy gap. Reversible UV-laser-light-induced spectral changes are observed for all of the specimens in different specimen-atmospheres (vacuum and O₂ gas). The results elucidate the defect-effects of the PL properties and the PL enhancement mechanism in ZrO₂ nanocrystals.     

Functional Monomers and Polymers. CXXXVI. Effect of Metal Ions on the Interaction of Synthetic Nucleic Acid Analogs

The effect of metal ions on the conformation of thymine-containing poly-D-lysine was studied by CD spectra in aqueous solution. Of the metal ions studied, only copper(II) ion affected the conformation of nucleic acid analogs. Copper(II) ion also affected the specifically interacting system made up of thymine-containing poly-D-lysine and polyadenylic acid.     

Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Amines on a Mediator‐Modified Electrode by Electrochemical Copolymerization of Nitroxyl Radical Precursor Containing Pyrrole Side Chain and Bithiophene

This paper describes the electrocatalytic oxidation of amines on TEMPO (2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐1‐oxyl)‐modified electrodes prepared by electrochemical copolymerization of TEMPO precursor containing pyrrole side chain and 2,2′‐bithiophene. The modified electrode exhibits electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of primary and secondary amines. Cyclic voltammetric studies showed that the peak current of the cyclic voltammogram increased linearly with increasing concentration of amine in the sample solution.     

High Pressure Synthesis of Cycloadduct of Fullerene C60 with 2H-Pyran-2-one∗∗

Under high pressure conditions, fullerene C₆₀ smoothly reacts with 2H-pyran-2-one to give a [4+2] cycloadduct, which can be reduced to an alcohol derivative.

     

Water inclusion as a trigger for modulation of anthracene arrangement and fluorescence emission of organic salt

An organic salt composed 9,10-bis(4-aminophenyl)anthracene and hypophosphorous acid emits yellow-green fluorescence in the crystalline state. The salt also gives water inclusion crystal which provides blue-green fluorescence. Single X-ray crystal studies revealed that water molecules induced the fluorescence change resulting from reaggregation of molecular packing.     

Fluorine in Shark Teeth: Its Direct Atomic‐Resolution Imaging and Strengthening Function

Atomic‐resolution imaging of beam‐sensitive biominerals is extremely challenging, owing to their fairly complex structures and the damage caused by electron irradiation. Herein, we overcome these difficulties by performing aberration‐corrected electron microscopy with low‐dose imaging techniques, and report the successful direct atomic‐resolution imaging of every individual atomic column in the complex fluorapatite structure of shark tooth enameloid, which can be of paramount importance for teeth in general. We demonstrate that every individual atomic column in shark tooth enameloid can be spatially resolved, and has a complex fluorapatite structure. Furthermore, ab initio calculations show that fluorine atoms can be covalently bound to the surrounding calcium atoms, which improves understanding of their caries‐reducing effects in shark teeth.     

Minimization of erase-band in shingled PMR with asymmetric writer

To make the write-field much stronger with sharper cross-track field gradient in Shingled perpendicular Magnetic Recording (SMR), we have successfully developed asymmetric SMR heads with one-side shield design. Using these heads, higher track density capability on the shielded-side was demonstrated, which came from narrower erase-band width at shielded side.     

Diastereoselective Synthesis of a Hydroazulene Derivative by Tandem Michael-Wittig Reactions

The reaction of a cyclic phosphonium ylide [ 1 ] with enoate 2 gives a hydroazulene derivative with stereoselectivity.     

3,4-Thienylene-ethynylene Oligomers

Several well-defined 3,4-thienylene-ethynylene oligomers with different chain lengths have been synthesized and characterized. X-Ray crystallographic analyses proved their unique, totally helical conformations.
