This paper provides the most fully comprehensive evidence to date on whether or not monetary aggregates are valuable for forecasting US inflation in the early to mid 2000s. We explore a wide range of different definitions of money, including different methods of aggregation and different collections of included monetary assets. In our forecasting experiment we use two nonlinear techniques, namely, recurrent neural networks and kernel recursive least squares regression—techniques that are new to macroeconomics. Recurrent neural networks operate with potentially unbounded input memory, while the kernel regression technique is a finite memory predictor. The two methodologies compete to find the best fitting US inflation forecasting models and are then compared to forecasts from a naïve random walk model. The best models were nonlinear autoregressive models based on kernel methods. Our findings do not provide much support for the usefulness of monetary aggregates in forecasting inflation. Beyond its economic findings, our study is in the tradition of physicists’ long-standing interest in the interconnections among statistical mechanics, neural networks, and related nonparametric statistical methods, and suggests potential avenues of extension for such studies.  相似文献

Aspartic acid derivatives with branched N-alkyl or N-arylalkyl substituents are valuable precursors to artificial dipeptide sweeteners such as neotame and advantame. The development of a biocatalyst to synthesize these compounds in a single asymmetric step is an as yet unmet challenge. Reported here is an enantioselective biocatalytic synthesis of various difficult N-substituted aspartic acids, including N-(3,3-dimethylbutyl)-l -aspartic acid and N-[3-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)propyl]-l -aspartic acid, precursors to neotame and advantame, respectively, using an engineered variant of ethylenediamine-N,N′-disuccinic acid (EDDS) lyase from Chelativorans sp. BNC1. This engineered C–N lyase (mutant D290M/Y320M) displayed a remarkable 1140-fold increase in activity for the selective hydroamination of fumarate compared to that of the wild-type enzyme. These results present new opportunities to develop practical multienzymatic processes for the more sustainable and step-economic synthesis of an important class of food additives.  相似文献

A canonical (contact) transformation is performed on the time variable (in extended phase space) to reexpress relativistic dynamics in terms of proper time, leaving the generalized coordinates and canonical momentum as functions of this time variable. The form of the energy functional conjugate to this time variable is seen to be similar to that of a nonrelativistic dynamics at all values of particle momenta. The formulation is explored for single- and multiparticle classical systems. The (form) invariance of the theory is determined by a group which results from a similarity action of the contact group on the Poincaré group. One advantage of this approach is that it overcomes the no-interaction difficulties introduced by standard methods.  相似文献

S-factors for direct capture reactions can be found at astrophysical energies from asymptotic normalization coefficients which provide the normalization of the tail of the overlap function. For example the overlap for 8B → 7Be+p defines the S-factor for 7Be (p, γ)8B. Peripheral transfer reactions offer a technique to determine these asymptotic normalization coefficients. As a test of the technique, the 16O(3He, d)17F reaction has been used to determine asymptotic normalization coefficients for transitions to the ground and first excited states of 17F. The S-factors for 16O(p, γ)17F calculated from these 17F → 16O+p asymptotic normalization coefficients are found to be in very good agreement with recent measurements. Following the same technique, the 10B(7Be, 8B)9Be and 14N(7Be, 8B)13C reactions have been used to measure the asymptotic normalization coefficient for 7Be(p, γ)8B. This result provides an indirect determination of S 17(0).  相似文献

In order to introduce flexibility into the simple point-charge (SPC) water model, the impact of the intramolecular degrees of freedom on liquid properties was systematically studied in this work as a function of many possible parameter sets. It was found that the diffusion constant is extremely sensitive to the equilibrium bond length and that this effect is mainly due to the strength of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The static dielectric constant was found to be very sensitive to the equilibrium bond angle via the distribution of intermolecular angles in the liquid: A larger bond angle will increase the angle formed by two molecular dipoles, which is particularly significant for the first solvation shell. This result is in agreement with the work of Hochtl et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 4927 (1998)]. A new flexible simple point-charge water model was derived by optimizing bulk diffusion and dielectric constants to the experimental values via the equilibrium bond length and angle. Due to the large sensitivities, the parametrization only slightly perturbs the molecular geometry of the base SPC model. Extensive comparisons of thermodynamic, structural, and kinetic properties indicate that the new model is much improved over the standard SPC model and its overall performance is comparable to or even better than the extended SPC model.  相似文献

In the present study, a facility, i.e., a mechanical deflection system (MDS), was established and applied to assess the long-term reliability of the solder joints in plastic ball grid array (BGA) assembly. It was found that the MDS not only quickly assesses the long-term reliability of solder joints within days, but can also mimic similar failure mechanisms in accelerated thermal cycling (ATC) tests. Based on the MDS and ATC reliability experiments, the acceleration factors (AF) were obtained for different reliability testing conditions. Furthermore, by using the creep constitutive relation and fatigue life model developed in part I, a numerical approach was established for the purpose of virtual life prediction of solder joints. The simulation results were found to be in good agreement with the test results from the MDS. As a result, a new reliability assessment methodology was established as an alternative to ATC for the evaluation of long-term reliability of plastic BGA assembly.
