We report the results of an experimental investigation of the transition to turbulence in a pipe over approximately an order of magnitude range in the Reynolds number Re. A novel scaling law is uncovered using a systematic experimental procedure which permits contact to be made with modern theoretical thinking. The principal result we uncover is a scaling law which indicates that the amplitude of perturbation required to cause transition scales as O(Re-1).  相似文献

Three-dimensional composition maps of nominally pure Ge domes grown on Si(001) at 600 degrees C were obtained from grazing incidence anomalous x-ray scattering data at the Ge K edge. The data were analyzed in terms of a stack of layers with laterally varying concentration. The results demonstrated that the domes contained a Si-rich core covered by a Ge-rich shell and were independently supported by selective etch experiments. The composition profile resulted from substrate Si alloying into the Ge during growth to partially relax the stress in and under the domes.  相似文献

The burning and extinction characteristics of isolated small nonane droplets are examined in a buoyant convective environment and in an environment with no external axial convection (as created by doing experiments at low gravity) to promote spherical droplet flames. The ambience is air and a mixture of 30%O2/70%He to assess the influence of soot formation. The initial droplet diameter (Do) ranges from 0.4 to 0.95 mm. Measurements are reported of the extinction diameter and time to extinction, and of the evolution of droplet diameter, flame diameter, soot shell diameter, burning rate, and broadband radiative emissions.In a buoyancy-free environment for air larger droplets burn slower than smaller droplets for the range of Do examined, which is attributed to the influence of soot. In the presence of a buoyant flow in air, no influence of Do is observed on the burning rate while the buoyant flames are still heavily sooting. The effect of Do is believed to be due to a combination of dominance of the nonluminous, nonsooting, portion of the buoyant flame around the forward half of the droplet on heat transport and the secondary role of the luminous wake portion of the flame. In a non-sooting helium inert at low gravity, no effect of Do is found on the evolution of droplet diameter.Flame extinction is observed only in the 30%O2/70%He ambience. For all of the observations, extinction appears to occur before the disappearance of the droplet which is then followed by a period of evaporation. The extinction diameter and time to extinction increases with Do and an empirical correlation is presented for these two variables.  相似文献

The indirect adhesive procedures constitute recently a substantial portion of contemporary esthetic restorative treatments. The resin cements have been used to bond tooth substrate and restorative materials. Due to recently introduction of the self-bonding resin luting cement based on a new monomer, filler and initiation technology has become important to study the degree of conversion of these new materials. In the present work the polymerization reaction and the filler content of dual-cured dental resin cements were studied by means of infra-red spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetry (TG). Twenty specimens were made in a metallic mold (8 mm diameter × 1 mm thick) from each of 2 cements, Panavia® F2.0 (Kuraray) and RelyX? Unicem Applicap (3M/ESPE). Each specimen was cured with blue LED with power density of 500 mW/cm2 for 30 s. Immediately after curing, 24 and 48 h, and 7 days DC was determined. For each time interval 5 specimens were pulverized, pressed with KBr and analyzed with FT-IR. The TG measurements were performed in Netzsch TG 209 under oxygen atmosphere and heating rate of 10°C/min from 25 to 700°C. A two-way ANOVA showed DC (%) mean values statistically significance differences between two cements (p < 0.05). The Tukey’s test showed no significant difference only for the 24 and 48 h after light irradiation for both resin cements (p > 0.05). The Relx-Y? Unicem mean values were significantly higher than Panavia® F 2.0. The degree of conversion means values increasing with the storage time and the filler content showed similar for both resin cements.  相似文献

Time-resolved femtosecond multicolor absorption spectroscopy of silver nanoparticle (NP) colloids with particle diameter in range of 10–30 nm is presented. The amplified femtosecond excitation of the surface plasmon resonance band resulted in transient absorption spectra reflecting the electron-phonon relaxation dynamics, which takes place on the early picosecond time scale. The monitored band with enhanced absorption in the 490–540 nm spectral range exhibited red-shift with increasing pump fluency from 0.4 mJ/cm2 to the 1.5 mJ/cm2 level. The growth of the relaxation time with increasing pump fluency reveals the temperature dependent relaxation dynamics caused by the nanometer sized electron confinement in the case of silver. This effect was confirmed also by identification of the relaxation time dependence on the particle diameter at constant pump fluency. The complex experimental results revealed nonlinearities both in the laser excitation and electron relaxation processes.  相似文献

Presented is a theory of a new type of resonant dispersion of sound in a gas-liquid bubble media based on the use of effective dynamic density. We show that because of spheroidal-translational oscillations of the bubbles the dynamic density of the gas-liquid media has a resonance dependence on the frequency, which is manifested in wave process as a low-frequency resonant dispersion of sound. This dispersion is significantly different from the known high-frequency resonant dispersion, which is due to resonance in the volume oscillations of the bubbles. The results of the experiments confirming the existence of the resonant dispersion of sound at a frequency equal to half the natural frequency of the spheroidal oscillations of bubbles are provided.  相似文献

Detecting pipe irregularities such as intrusions can be challenging. However, subtle changes can be identified in the complex acoustic fields measured over a range of frequencies and over a time interval given an “array” of receivers. In particular, for two receivers one can coherently process the signals via matched field processing (MFP) to infer whether or not there have been changes such as new intrusions relative to undisturbed fields measured earlier. There is no acoustic modelling of the fields required, only the simple linear processor is applied, and only test data (five scenarios) are used in this demonstration. A key advantage to using MFP plus two (or more) microphones is that absolute sound levels need not be carefully measured.  相似文献

A 2 + 1-dimensional nonlinear differential equation integrable by the inverse-spectral-transform method with the quartet operator representation is proposed. This GL(2, C)-valued chiral-field-type equation is the generating (prototype) equation for the Davey-Stewartson and Ishimori equations. It coincides with the nonlinear equation for the Davey-Stewartson eigenfunction ψDS. The initial-value problem for this equation is solved by the techniques for the and the nonlocal Riemann-Hilbert problem. The classes of exact solutions with the functional parameters and exponential-rational solutions are constructed by the method. The static lump solution in the case α = i and the exponentially localized solution at α = i are found. Other similar examples of nonlinear integrable equations in 2 + 1 and 1 + 1 dimensions are discussed.  相似文献

The two-photon absorption that leads to the ultraviolet upconversion luminescence in the SiO2-Al2O3-B2O3-Na2O3-Zr2O: Cd3+ glass has been investigated. The inference has been made that no photon cascade emission takes place under excitation by monochromatic light corresponding to the maximum of the absorption band of the Cd3+ ion (204 nm). The mechanisms of concentration quenching and energy transfer between Cd3+ ions and optically active defects of the aluminoborosilicate glass have been discussed.  相似文献
