NMR study on an Li+-ion diffusion in the solid solution Li4−x(PO4)x(SiO4)1−x with the Li4SiO4-type structure

Diffusive motion of an Li⁺ion in the solid solution Li_4?x(PO₄)_x(SiO₄)_1?x (0 ≦ x ≦ 0.35) was studied by ⁷Li pulsed nmr between ? 70 and 440°C. Activation energies for an Li⁺ ion diffusion decreased monotonically with increasing x in the composition. These values are smaller than those reported from the measurement of ionic conductivity. Discrepency seems to result from the local nature of an Li⁺ diffusion observed by nmr contrary to the long-range one in the ionic conduction.     

Proton polarization and differential cross section for the (3He,p) reaction on 6Li and 9Be at 14 MeV

Angular distributions of the proton polarization and the differential cross section have been measured for the reaction (³He, p) initiated by 14 MeV incident ³He particles and proceeding to the ground and the first excited states of the final nuclei ⁸Be and ¹¹B. Large polarization values were observed, especially for the ⁹Be(³He, p)¹¹B reaction leading to both the ground and the first excited states in ¹¹B. The experimental results have been analysed in terms of a two-nucleon transfer spindependent distorted-waves theory using finite-range formalism and including corrections due to the non-locality of the optical potentials. A proper coherent summation over L and S, whenever necessary was included in the DWBA calculations of the polarization and the differential cross section as implied by the presence of the spin-orbit terms in the optical-model potentials used to generate the distorted waves.     

Anisotropy of dielectric relaxation in crystal form II of poly(vinylidene fluoride)

The anisotropy of the crystalline relaxation (α relaxation) in oriented poly(vinylidene fluoride) in crystal form II has been studied. The dielectric increment Δε is analyzed on the basis of the two-site model. A linear relation between Δε/χξ and cos²θ is obtained, where χ is the degree of crystallinity, ξ is the ratio of the internal field to the applied field, and θ is the angle between the applied electric field and the molecular axis. The dipole moment changes direction only along the molecular axis in the relaxation in crystal form II; the molecular motion cannot be explained by chain rotation around the molecular axis. Possible models for the α relaxation are proposed: change in conformation with internal rotation can occur in the crystalline chains, and defects in the crystalline regions play an important role in the α relaxation.

Detection of ozone by differential absorption using CO2 laser

The differential absorption method with the conventional CO₂ laser is discussed for the detection and monitoring of ozone in ambient atmosphere. By using the P(14) line in the (00°1 to 02°0) and the R(16) line in the (00°1 to 10°0) band, the measurement of ozone was made in a field. As an experimental result, the minimum detectable concentration of 0.15 ppm was obtained with the system, and the concentration of 0.2 ppm was measured in a photo-chemical smog.     

Evidence of complete fusion in the sub-barrier 16O+238U reaction

Evaporation residue cross sections in the 16O+238U reaction were measured for the energy range from above- to extreme sub-barrier. The cross sections are reproduced by a statistical model calculation, for which partial cross sections are calculated by a coupled-channel model taking into account the prolate deformation of 238U. Complete fusion was observed in the collision of the projectile with the tips of the 238U target, in the same way as the side collision.
