TDPAC study in ZnTiF6·6H2O between room temperature and 1273 K

Using the time differential perturbed angular correlation technique, the hyperfine interactions as titanium sites in ZnTiF6·6H₂O and its decomposition products were determined between room temperature (300 K) and 1273 K. The different steps in the decomposition pattern were identified and a simple model is given for it.     

Finite Hurwitz braid group actions for Artin groups

We prove that (with two possible exceptions) the Hurwitz braid group action on the sequence of standard generators of an irreducible Artin group has a finite orbit if and only if the Artin group is of finite type (i.e., the corresponding Coxeter group is finite).     

Analytical formulas for the velocity field induced by an infinitely thin vortex ring

Three different analytical solutions are presented for a potential vortex ring using three different streamfunctions. Verification studies confirm that all three approaches are valid. It is found that the solution obtained using the Biot–Savart law is the most efficient method due to its simplicity. It is shown that all analytical results are accurate to within machine accuracy and sample calculations are included. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Local radial Phragmén-Lindelöf estimates for plurisubharmonic functions on analytic varieties

We give a sufficient condition for a local radial Phragmén-Lindelöf principle on analytic varieties. This condition is expressed in terms of existence of hyperbolic directions.

     

Strategic commitment to price to stimulate downstream innovation in a supply chain

It is generally in a firm’s interest for its supply chain partners to invest in innovations. To the extent that these innovations either reduce the partners’ variable costs or stimulate demand for the end product, they will tend to lead to higher levels of output for all of the firms in the chain. However, in response to the innovations of its partners, a firm may have an incentive to opportunistically increase its own prices. The possibility of such opportunistic behavior creates a hold-up problem that leads supply chain partners to underinvest in innovation. Clearly, this hold-up problem could be eliminated by a pre-commitment to price. However, by making an advance commitment to price, a firm sacrifices an important means of responding to demand uncertainty. In this paper we examine the trade-off that is faced when a firm’s channel partner has opportunities to invest in either cost reduction or quality improvement, i.e. demand enhancement. Should it commit to a price in order to encourage innovation, or should it remain flexible in order to respond to demand uncertainty. We discuss several simple wholesale pricing mechanisms with respect to this trade-off.     

Vinyl‐type polymerization of norbornene by nickel(II) bisbenzimidazole catalysts

Novel nickel(II) bisbenzimidazole complexes were prepared via a three‐step synthetic procedure consisting of aniline/diacid condensation, ligand N‐alkylation, and metal complexation. The complexes were characterized by X‐ray crystallography and found to possess a pseudotetrahedral geometry. Upon activation with methylaluminoxane, these nickel bisbenzimidazoles did not polymerize simple olefins (e.g., ethylene, propylene, and 1‐butene) but were found to carry out the rapid and efficient polymerization of norbornene. The polynorbornene products were characterized by gel permeation chromatography/light scattering, ¹³C NMR, and IR, and their Mark–Houwink and dn/dc parameters were determined. The molecular weights of the polynorbornenes were very high (weight‐average molecular weight = 587,000–797,000 g/mol). ¹³C NMR suggested that the polymerization occurred via vinyl addition (i.e., a 2,3‐linked polymer); no ring‐opened product was observed. Improvements to air mass calculations for ground-based infrared measurements

High-resolution ground-based infrared solar spectra are routinely recorded at the Network for the Detection of Stratospheric Change (NDSC) stations. These data sets play a key role in providing a long-term record of atmospheric composition and their links to climate change. The analysis of observed infrared spectra involves comparison to a computer-modeled atmosphere where knowledge of the air mass distribution is an essential component. This note summarises improvements made to an existing and widely used computer code (FSCATM) to perform refractive ray-tracing and calculation of the air mass distribution. Changes were made towards higher vertical resolution in the troposphere and increased numerical precision. The revised FSCATM improves the analysis of infrared spectra mostly through the more accurate representation of the temperature profile. Air mass differences with respect to earlier versions are documented and are typically <0.7%, exceptions being extreme cases of inversion layers. The current version provides ray tracing and air mass calculations for any terrestrial observation site. The output files are reported in a format compatible with the SFIT and SFIT2 retrieval algorithms, which are widely used for NDSC infrared atmospheric studies. The improved computer code, documentation, reference profiles, and test cases are available electronically.     

The alternating semigroups: Generators and congruences

The idea of an even permutation has recently been generalized, via path notation, to one-one partial transformations (charts) in the symmetric inverse semigroupsC _n. The even charts form the alternating semigroupA _n ^c ⊂C _n . Generators ofA _n ^c are identified: It then follows that forn≥5,A _n ^c is the collection of restrictions of the even permutations (of rankn). Like theC _n case, the congruences ofA _n ^c form a chain. Part of this research was supported by a Mary Washington College faculty development grant.
