Thin layers of aluminium: A molecular orbital study

Molecular beam epitaxy has been used to prepare thin layers (200 nm thickness) of aluminium grown either on aluminium or gallium arsenide substrates; their He(I) and He(II) photoelectron spectra have been recorded. The quasirelativistic CNDO/1 method has been applied to investigate the band structure of {Al}₁₇₂, {Al}₂₈₄ and {Al}₄₂₄ clusters obtained by a duplication of the unit cell: the DOS profiles and their projections were generated. These data were correlated with the periodic crystal orbitals of the EHT quality. The first excitation energy serves as a better estimate of the vanishing energy gap showing thus a metallic character of aluminium.     

Neutron diffraction study of RECo2Si2 intermetallics

A neutron diffraction study of polycrystalline RECo₂Si₂ intermetallics (RE = Pr, Nd, Tb, Ho, Er) carried out at liquid helium temperature shows the presence of a collinear antiferromagnetic ordering of +?+? type. Magnetic moment is localized on RE ions only and amounts to the RE³⁺ free ion value. In ErCo₂Si₂ the magnetic moment is normal to the tetragonal unique axis, whereas in the remaining compounds the magnetic moment is aligned along it. Néel points were determined from the temperature dependence of magnetic peak heights.     

Control of continuous sedimentation of ideal suspensions as an initial and boundary value problem

We present the control of continuous sedimentation in an ideal thickener as an initial and boundary value problem and construct the entropy solution.     

Determining radii of meromorphy via orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle

Using a convergence theorem for Fourier–Padé approximants constructed from orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, we prove an analogue of Hadamard's theorem for determining the radius of m-meromorphy of a function analytic on the unit disk and apply this to the location of poles of the reciprocal of Szeg functions.     

Discrete Sturm–Liouville problems, Jacobi matrices and Lagrange interpolation series

The close relationship between discrete Sturm–Liouville problems belonging to the so-called limit-circle case, the indeterminate Hamburger moment problem and the search of self-adjoint extensions of the associated semi-infinite Jacobi matrix is well known. In this paper, all these important topics are also related with associated sampling expansions involving analytic Lagrange-type interpolation series.     

Heuristic Rejection in Interval Global Optimization

Based on the investigation carried out in Ref. 1, this paper incorporates new studies about the properties of inclusion functions on subintervals while a branch-and-bound algorithm is solving global optimization problems. It is found that the relative place of the global minimum value within the inclusion function value of the objective function at the current interval indicates mostly whether the given interval is close to a minimizer point. This information is used in a heuristic interval rejection rule that can save a considerable amount of computation. Illustrative examples are discussed and an extended numerical study shows the advantages of the new approach.     

Large Scale Linear Programs and Heuristics for the Design of Survivable Telecommunication Networks

We consider the problem of providing a minimum cost multi-service network subject to one link failure scenarios. We assume our network is fully meshed and demand is satisfied by using direct or two hop-paths. We provide a large scale linear programming formulation and propose and test two effective heuristics.     

Curvature Conditions for Immersions of Submanifolds and Applications

Some curvature conditions about the geodesics emanating from a submanifold are obtained. These conditions are used to to study the topological and geometric properties of the ambient spaces which admit some minimal submanifolds.     

Local solution for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with periodic conditions

In this article we prove a local existence and uniqueness theorem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Equation (u _t +u _xxx +uu _x ) _x −u _yy =0) in the Sobolev spaces of orders≥3, with initial values in the same spaces, and periodic boundary conditions. This theorem improves previous results based upon the application of singular perturbation techniques.
