Homological properties of Sklyanin algebras

Summary. To a pair consisting of an elliptic curve and a point on it, Odeskii and Feigin associate certain quadratic algebras (“Sklyanin algebras”), having the Hilbert series of a polynomial algebra. In this paper we show that Sklyanin algebras have good homological properties and we obtain some information about their so-called linear modules. We also show how the construction by Odeskii and Feigin may be generalized so as to yield other “Sklyanin-type” algebras. Oblatum 25-XI-1993     

Metalation of unsaturated polymers by using activated organolithium compounds and the formation of graft copolymers. II

Polybutadiene was successfully metalated by use of tert-butyllithium activated with alkoxides of Group I metals without chain degradation. The metalated polymer was grafted with styrene and 1,3-butadiene to give novel graft copolymers of varying microstructure. This metalating system was found to be highly efficient; however, its catalyst effectiveness is less than that of organolithium-TMEDA metalation agent.     

Comparison of partial least squares regression and multi-layer neural networks for quantification of nonlinear systems and application to gas phase Fourier transform infrared spectra

The performance of back-propagation artificial neural networks (NN) and partial least squares (PLS) regression for the calibration of linear and nonlinear systems has been investigated by using six types of synthetic data. Three PLS methods, conventional linear-PLS and two nonlinear-PLS methods, have been used in the study. In all but one of the synthetic data types, the band intensities varied nonlinearly with concentration. These five data types were designed to represent the effect of band shifts with increasing concentration, a nonlinear relationship between peak height and concentration, or a combination of both types of nonlinearities. The results showed that NNs perform better than PLS for all the nonlinear datasets. When a band shift is the major reason for the nonlinearity, the relative performance of NNs and PLS depends on the overlap of the absorption bands. If there is no band overlap, neither NN nor PLS can calibrate the data accurately but the results could be improved by convolving the spectral features with a Gaussian broadening function. The results indicate that a combination of peak position shift and peak height change is the most difficult nonlinearity to calibrate. NN and PLS were also used to determine the concentration of CHCl₃ in pure component and mixtures of CHCl₃ and CH₂Cl₂ using their Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, a dataset that has been proved nonlinear in high concentrations due to the nonlinear response of the detector. The best results for the experimental data were obtained by applying one hidden layer NN to the mean-centered absorbance spectra.     

Total synthesis of the macrocyclic cysteine knot microprotein MCoTI-II

The first total synthesis of MCoTI-II, a cysteine knot microprotein and potent trypsin inhibitor, is described; a synthetic strategy has been developed that combines efficient backbone construction via optimised solid phase peptide synthesis with one-pot 'thia-zip' native chemical ligation and refolding to yield the natural product.     

Hyperfine structure and isotope shifts in near-infrared transitions of atomic nitrogen

We have obtained Doppler-free spectra of transitions in the → 2p²(³P) and → multiplets of atomic nitrogen using saturated absorption spectroscopy. These multiplets consist of respectively of seven and eight transitions, and have center of gravity wavelengths of 821 nm and 869 nm. Values for the hyperfine structure coupling constants of all the upper and lower states for these multiplets were obtained for both ¹⁴N and ¹⁵N. Isotope shifts of three transitions in each multiplet were also measured, and a significant J-dependence to the shifts was observed.
