Dispersion of the nonlinear refractive index in sapphire

The nonlinear refractive index, n2, of sapphire was experimentally measured in the 550-1550-nm wavelength range by use of a picosecond Z-scan technique. It was found that in this spectral region the value of n2 decreases monotonically from approximately 3.3 x 10(-16) to approximately 2.8 x 10(-16) cm2/W. An empirical expression for the wavelength dependence of the nonlinear refractive index in the 270-1550-nm range was obtained.     

High resolution absorption cross-section measurements of the Schumann-Runge bands of O2 by VUV Fourier transform spectroscopy

The photoabsorption spectrum of the O₂ Schumann-Runge bands was measured with resolution comparable to the Doppler widths by using the VUV Fourier transform spectrometer from Imperial College, London, combined with synchrotron radiation as a continuum light source at the Photon Factory, KEK, Japan. The analysis of the (12,0)-(17,0) bands of the Schumann-Runge system provides accurate rotational line positions as well as the line intensities from 185 to 175 nm. Molecular constants of the levels of the state have been determined. The (v^′,0) band oscillator strengths were determined as 2.38, 2.62, 2.70, 2.66, 2.40, and 2.12×10⁻⁵ for the bands from v^′=12 to 17, respectively.     

Lipase TL-mediated kinetic tesolution of 5-benzyloxy-1-tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy-2-pentanol at low temperature: concise asymmetric synthesis of both enantiomers of a piperazic acid derivative

Lipase TL-mediated kinetic resolution of (+/-)-5-benzyloxy-1-tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy-2-pentanol (5) at low temperature proceeded to give the corresponding (S)-alcohol 5 and (R)-acetate 6 in quantitative yields with high enantiomeric purity. The addition of bases such as pyridine, DMAP, 2,4- and 2,6-lutidines, or triethylamine considerably enhanced the rate of kinetic resolution. The alcohol (S)-5 and the acetate (R)-6 were converted to piperazic acid derivatives (R)- and (S)-3, respectively, via the intramolecular Mitsunobu reaction as a key step.     

Visible-light induced hydrophilicity on nitrogen-substituted titanium dioxide films

Nitrogen-substituted titanium dioxide thin films were found to undergo hydrophilic conversion under irradiation with visible light. The hydrophilicity was enhanced by increasing the degree of nitrogen substitution at oxygen sites. The water contact angle for the thin film with the greatest hydrophilicity, TiO1.9884N0.0116, changed from 20 degrees to 6 degrees following irradiation.     

Aging of the zero-field-cooled magnetization in Ising spin glasses: experiment and numerical simulation

Growth of the zero-field-cooled magnetization (ZFCM) under continuous heating with and without an intermittent stop(s) is studied on Ising spin glasses both experimentally and numerically. Despite the large difference between time scales of the experiment and the simulation, the ZFCM behavior observed in the two systems can be quantitatively interpreted by means of a common set of the scaling expressions based on the droplet picture. The results strongly suggest that the spin-glass coherence length reached by the laboratory time scales is about a hundred lattice spacings or less. Within this length scale no signature of the chaos effect (rejuvenation) has been found in the ZFCM measured.     

Analytic non-integrable Hamiltonian systems and irregular singularity

We study a C ^∞-Liouville-integrable and analytic non-integrable Hamiltonian system. We will show that an irregular singular character plays a crucial role in the analytic non-integrability of the system. Hydrobromic acid-dimethyl sulfoxide reagent for dealkylation of 5,10-dialkyl-5,10-dihydrophenazines: Synthesis of 10-alkyl-2(10H)-phenazinones

By the reaction of 5,10-dialkyl-substituted 5,10-dihydrophenazine with hydrobromic acid in dimethyl sulfoxide at 90–110°, 10-alkyl-2(10H)-phenazinone was obtained as a major product. Brominated dihydrophenazine was isolated in the case of 1,6-dichloro-5,10-dimethyl-5,10-dihydrophenazine.

Intensely Fluorescent Azobenzenes: Synthesis,Crystal Structures,Effects of Substituents,and Application to Fluorescent Vital Stain

2‐[Bis(pentafluorophenyl)boryl]azobenzenes bearing hydrogen, methoxy, dimethylamino, trifluoromethyl, fluoro, n‐butyl, and tert‐butyldimethylsiloxy groups at the 4′‐position or methoxy and bromo groups at the 4‐position have been synthesized. The 4‐bromo group of the 2‐boryl‐4‐bromoazobenzene derivative was converted to phenyl and diphenylamino groups by palladium‐catalyzed reactions. The absorption and fluorescence properties have been investigated using UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The 2‐borylazobenzenes emitted an intense green, yellow, and orange fluorescence, in marked contrast to the usual azobenzene fluorescence. The 4′‐siloxy derivative showed the highest fluorescence quantum yield (0.90) among those reported for azobenzenes to date. The correlation between the substituent and the fluorescence properties was elucidated by studying the effect of the substituent on the relaxation process and from DFT and TD‐DFT calculations. An electron‐donating group at the 4′‐position was found to be important for an intense emission. Application of fluorescent azobenzenes as a fluorescent vital stain for the visualization of living tissues was also investigated by microinjection into Xenopus embryos, suggesting these compounds are nontoxic towards embryos.
