Synthese und Kristallstruktur von Blei(II)‐oxidhalogenid‐Alkoholaten mit unterschiedlichen Verknüpfungsvarianten von Pb4O4‐Heterokubaneinheiten

Synthesis and Crystal Structure Determination of Lead(II) Oxide Halide Alcoholates with Different Connectivity of Pb₄O₄ Heterocubane‐like Subunits The reaction of red lead(II) oxide (Litharge) and lead(II) halide (Cl^? and Br^?) with diethylene glycole at a temperature of 180 °C leads to the isotypic compounds [Pb₆(C₄H₈O₃)O₂Cl₆] (1) and [Pb₆(C₄H₈O₃)O₂Br₆] (2) . In a similar synthesis with PbI₂ as educt at temperature of 160 °C the two modifications β‐[Pb₆(C₄H₈O₃)O₂I₆] (3) and α‐[Pb₆(C₄H₈O₃)O₂I₆] (4) were found, whereas at a reaction temperature of 180 °C [Pb₉(C₂H₄O₂)(C₄H₈O₃)O₃I₈] (5) was surprisingly obtained as product. The X‐ray diffraction data show that at a temperature of 180 °C a splitting of the ether took place. The cited compounds show cubane like subunits built by lead and oxygen atoms. These fragments are connected by alkoholate molecules. In 5 additionally an I₆ octahedra centered by lead is observed.     

On the Stereochemistry of Natural Irones,Dihydroirones, and their Precursors

Natural irones from the essential oil of Iris rhizomes develop by oxidative degradation of C₃₁-triterpenoids produced by the plant. Two enantiomeric forms of irones are found in Iris, oils of different origin. The optical properties and CD spectra of irones, dihydroirones and their C₃₁-precursors are reported and their absolute stereochemistry is determined.     

Separation of enantiomers: needs, challenges, perspectives

Chiral drugs, agrochemicals, food additives and fragrances represent classes of compounds with high economic and scientific potential. First the present implications of their chiral nature and necessity of separating enantiomers are summarised in this article. In the following a brief overview of the actual approaches to perform enantioseparations at analytical and preparative scale is given. Challenging aspects of these strategies, such as problems associated with data management, choice of suitable chiral selectors for given enantioseparations and enhanced understanding of the underlying chiral recognition principles, are discussed. Alternatives capable of meeting the requirements of industrial processes, in terms of productivity, cost-effectiveness and environmental issues (e.g., enantioselective membranes) are critically reviewed. The impact of combinatorial methodologies on faster and more effective development and optimisation of novel chiral selectors is outlined. Finally, the merits and limitations of most recent trends in discrimination of enantiomers, including advances in the fields of sensors, microanalysis systems, chiroptical methods and chemical force microscopy are evaluated.     

On the dimerization of BH3 and the associated delocalization (resonance) energy

SCF calculations utilizing a basis of all s-type Gaussians have been performed to investigate the dimerization of BH₃ to B₂H₆. Localized molecular orbitals and pseudonatural orbitals are calculated. The dimerization energy obtained (11.5 kcal/mole) supports the assumption that the non-Hartree-Fock interactions (electron correlation) play a dominant role (Exp = 40–60 kcal/mole). The energy of the principal type of resonance structure based on the SCF-MO 's of the separated-but-distorted BH₃ systems is rigorously calculated and found to be 150 kcal/mole higher in energy than the SCF energy of B₂H₆. Thus, resonance stabilization (delocalization) is shown to be extremely important to the stability of the “three-center” bonds in B₂H₆, as has been suspected for many years.     

Synthesis of (±)-Desmarestene and (±)-Viridiene,the Two Sperm Releasing and Attracting Pheromones from the Brown Algae Desmarestia aculeata and Desmarestia viridis

Desmarestene 1 6-(1Z,3-butadienyl)-1,4-cycloheptadiene and viridiene 3 cis-3-(1Z, 3-butadienyl)-4-vinylcyclopentene are chemical messengers for male gametes of the brown algae Desmarestia aculeate and Desmarestia viridis. Total syntheses of 1 , 3 and their stereoisomers 1a , 3a - c are reported. Gas-chromatographic comparison of synthetic 1 and 3 with the corresponding natural products has established their structural identity.     

Prediction of the glass transition temperature for compatible polymer blends of varying compositions

Compatible polymer blends have been found to have widespread commercial applications. The simplest criterion for judging polymer—polymer miscibility in the solid state is the glass transition temperature (T_g), which can vary widely according to blend composition for a compatible system.Recently, an equation which predicts the T_g of intimate mixtures of compatible polymers has been derived, based on classical thermodynamics. Only a knowledge of the T_g and heat capacity increment (ΔC_p) of each pure component is required to predict the T_g at any composition.In this paper, the validity of this entropy-based relationship is investigated for a variety of commercial compatible polymer blends, including some based on poly(vinyl chloride), polystyrene, and poly(2,6-dimethyl-,4-phenylene oxide). The T_g and ΔC_p of each pure component are measured with a Perkin-Elmer DSC-2 differential scanning calorimeter, are predicted glass transition temperatures are compared with those observed experimentally.     

Structure Determination of a New Spirobicyclic Triterpenoid from Iris foetidissima

The novel iridal 10 has been isolated from rhizome extracts of Iris foetidissima. Its structure was established by spectroscopic methods and oxidative degradation. Final proof of the spirobicyclic nature of the compound – a new feature in the triterpenoid field – was afforded by the correlations observed in the 2D-HMBC- (¹H-detected multiple-bond heteronuclear multiple-quantum coherence) spectrum. The possible biogenesis of this unusual compound is discussed.     

Intermolecular diels-alder reactions of n-acyl-n-alkyl(aryl)-1-amino-1,3-dienes

Intermolecular Diels-Alder additions of the readily available dienamides $\text{3}$ to various dienophiles proceeded in a regio- and stereoselective manner, allowing the preparation of complex anilides ($\text{5}$), cyclohexenyl amides ($\text{6}$, $\text{8}$) and bridged heterocycles ($\text{13}$).
