The sodium salt of polyacrylic acid (NaPA) precipitates in the presence of Ca2+-ions. This phase behaviour can be represented by a phase diagram where the critical NaPA concentration is plotted versus the critical Ca2+ concentration resulting in a straight line as a phase boundary. The location of this phase boundary is influenced by the
presence of an inert monovalent salt like NaCl. The present contribution focuses on the coil dimensions of NaPA chains in
dilute aqueous solution corresponding to the one phase region of such a phase diagram. A variety of parameters with which
the size and shape of the polyelectrolyte chains can be modulated are revealed. Approaching the phase boundary by decreasing
the NaPA concentration at a constant Ca2+ content leads to a collapse of the NaPA chains. Combined static and dynamic light scattering suggests a compact spherical
shape as the final state of this transition, both in 0.1 M NaCl and in 0.01 M NaCl. In the lower NaCl concentration, indication
is presented for the existence of a cigar or pearl necklace like intermediate. Most strikingly, the collapsed chains can be
reexpanded by increasing the concentration of inert NaCl at constant content of NaPA and Ca2+. Clearly, excessive Na+-ions displace the Ca2+-ions from the NaPA chains.

Measurements of muon-catalyzed dt fusion ( d(mu)t-->4He + n + mu(-)) in solid HD have been performed. The theory describing the energy dependent resonant molecular formation rate for the reaction (mu)t + HD-->[(d(mu)t)pee](*) is compared to experimental results in a pure solid HD target. Constraints on the rates are inferred through the use of a Monte Carlo model developed specifically for the experiment. From the time-of-flight analysis of fusion events in 16 and 37 microg x cm(-2) targets, an average formation rate consistent with 0.897+/-(0.046)(stat)+/-(0.166)(syst) times the theoretical prediction was obtained. 相似文献

The technique of collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy has been used to measure the isotope shifts of the even-even isotopes of Hg (Z=80) in the mass range 182≤A≤198 at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE at CERN. The atomic transition studied (6s 6p 3 P 2- 6s7s 3 S 1,λ=546.1 nm) starts from a metastable state, which is populated in a quasi resonant charge transfer process. The resulting changes in nuclear mean square charge radii show clearly that182Hg follows the trend of the heavier, even, weakly oblate isotopes. Correspondingly the huge odd-even shape staggering in the light Hg isotopes continues and the nuclear shape staggering and shape coexistence persists down to the last isotope investigated,181Hg. An update of isotope shift and hyperfine structure data for181–206Hg is given, with a revised evaluation of the differences in nuclear mean square charge radii and of spectroscopic quadrupole moments. 相似文献

Elastography is a technique to assess the viscoelastic properties of tissue by measuring an acoustic wave propagating though the object. Here, the technique is applied in the course of standard MR mammography to 15 patients with different pathologies (six breast cancer cases, six fibroadenoma cases and three mastopathy cases). Low-frequency mechanical waves are coupled longitudinally into the tissue in order to obtain sufficient wave amplitude throughout the entire breast. This leads to the presence of a substantial fraction of compressional waves, which contribute to the total displacement field. It is shown theoretically that the correct evaluation of these contributions from the compressional wave is rather difficult due to the almost incompressible nature of tissue. To overcome this problem, it is proposed to apply the curl-operator to the measured displacement field in order to completely remove contributions from the compressional wave. Results from simulations and a breast phantom demonstrate the feasibility of the technique. The in vivo results show a good separation between breast cancer and benign fibroadenoma utilizing the shear modulus. Breast cancer appears on average 2.2 (P<.001) times stiffer. All breast cancer cases showed a good delineation to the surrounding breast tissue with an average elevation of a factor of 3.3 (P< 1.4 x 10(-6)). The Doppler-free laser-spectroscopic frequency measurement of Doppler-shifted optical lines in forward and backward direction
of a fast ion beam permits a sensitive test of the relativistic Doppler-formula and, hence, the relativistic time dilation
factor . An experiment on metastable 7Li+, stored at a velocity of v = 0.064c in the Heidelberg heavy-ion storage ring TSR, has confirmed time dilation with unprecedented accuracy. Latest tests at two
different ion-velocities (v = 0.03c and v = 0.064c) will enhance these measurements. An improved version of this experiment will be carried out at the experimental storage
ring (ESR) at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt. The ESR permits 7Li+ to be stored at v = 0.33c which promises an improvement of the sensitivity to deviations from γ

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of 4-trifluoromethyl-azobenzene-4′-methyleneoxy-alkanethiols (CF3– C6H4–N=N–C6H4–O–(CH2)
n
–SH on (111)-oriented poly-crystalline gold films on mica were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray
absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The spectra are analyzed with the help of density-functional-theory calculations of the isolated
molecule. Only one doublet is detected in the sulphur 2p spectra of the investigated SAMs, consistent with a thiolate bond of the molecule to the gold surface. The C 1s XP spectra and the corresponding XAS π
* resonance exhibit a rich structure which is assigned to the carbon atoms in the different chemical surroundings. Comparing
XPS binding energies of the azobenzene moiety and calculated initial-state shifts reveals comparable screening of all C 1s core holes. While the carbon 1s XPS binding energy lies below the π
*-resonance excitation-energy, the reversed order is found comparing core ionization and neutral core excitation of the nitrogen 1s core-hole of the azo group. This surprising difference in core-hole binding energies is interpreted as site-dependent polarization
screening and charge transfer among the densely packed aromatic moieties. We propose that a quenching of the optical excitation
within the molecular layer is thus one major reason for the low trans to cis photo-isomerization rate of azobenzene in aromatic-aliphatic

Since the discovery that muonic deuterium at energies near a few eV could travel distances of the order of 1 mm in condensed
hydrogen, and in particular that muonic tritium and muonic deuterium could emerge from the surface of a solid hydrogen layer,
the advantages of solid targets have enabled the study of several processes important in muon catalyzed fusion. A review of
the results is presented, emphasizing the strengths and limitations of the use of solid hydrogen layer targets.
