Low frequency dielectric spectroscopy of two room temperature chiral liquid crystal mixtures

Dielectric spectroscopy of two room temperature chiral liquid crystal mixtures (W-96 and W-97) have been carried out in the frequency range of 100?mHz–10?MHz. Low frequency dielectric relaxation modes corresponding to collective behavior of molecules (Goldstone- and soft-modes) in the SmC* phase have been found to be masked by the ionic conductance. Two slow modes of dielectric relaxation due to the ionic conductance have been detected (below 15?Hz) in planar-aligned samples. It has been observed that the effect of ionic conductance decreases with the number of thermal annealing cycles on the materials. With large number of thermal annealing cycles it has been possible to wipe out the effects of ionic conductance and then to detect other weak modes of dielectric relaxation which are otherwise masked.     

Twisted Grain Boundary Phases in the Binary Mixtures of 3ß-Chloro-5-Cholestene and 4-N-Decyloxybenzoic Acid

From the thermodynamical, optical texture and dielectric studies of the binary mixtures of 3β-chloro-5-cholestene (ChCl) and 4-n-decyloxybenzoic acid (DOBA), the phase diagram has been drawn. It has been observed that low concentrations of ChCl (1 to 7 mol%) in DOBA induce various types of twisted grain boundary (TGB) submesophases, whereas higher concentrations induce a smectic A (SmA) mesophase. Various optical textures of the TGB phases under different conditions of molecular anchoring have been observed. Weak transitions related with TGB phases have been detected from the temperature dependence of dielectric permittivity. The observed phase diagram of ChCl-DOBA binary system is in complete conformity with the theoretically predicted mean-field phase diagram derived by Renn within the framework of the chiral Chen-Lubenski model     

Exact entropy of dimer coverings for a class of lattices in three or more dimensions

We construct a class of lattices in three and higher dimensions for which the number of dimer coverings can be determined exactly using elementary arguments. These lattices are a generalization of the two-dimensional kagome lattice, and the method also works for graphs without translational symmetry. The partition function for dimer coverings on these lattices can be determined also for a class of assignments of different activities to different edges.     

On modeling of MPS‐based multiphase fluid flow with low density ratios

A divergence‐free moving particle semi‐implicit framework has been formulated for modeling of multiple miscible fluids having small density ratios (≤ 1.10) in the presence of free surface. A density‐weighted pressure gradient along with a hybrid free‐surface treatment is specifically adopted to incorporate the effect of marginal density difference through a higher‐order kernel. The hybrid free‐surface treatment reduces error in velocity divergence and resulting spurious velocity fluctuation in the vicinity of free surface for low‐velocity system. Scalar transport equation is resolved to update density associated with the particles at every time step. A total of 9 cases of lock‐exchange flow with different lock positions and density ratios have been utilized to validate the proposed framework. The model performs satisfactorily irrespective of lock positions and low density variations (3%‐9%).     

Boron-Containing Lipids and Liposomes: New Conjugates of Cholesterol with Polyhedral Boron Hydrides

A series of boron-containing lipids were prepared by reactions of cyclic oxonium derivatives of polyhedron boranes and metallacarboranes (closo-dodecaborate anion, cobalt and iron bis(dicarbollides)) with amine and carboxylic acids which are derived from cholesterol. Stable liposomal formulations, on the basis of synthesized boron-containing lipids, hydrogenated soybean l -α-phosphatidylcholine and (HSPC) 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[methoxy(polyethylene glycol)-2000] (DSPE-PEG) as excipients, were prepared and then characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) that revealed the formation of particles to be smaller than 200 nm in diameter. The resulting liposomal formulations showed moderate to excellent loading and entrapment efficiency, thus justifying the design of the compounds to fit in the lipid bilayer and ensuring ease of in vivo use for future application. The liposomal formulations based on cobalt and iron bis(dicarbollide)-based lipids were found to be nontoxic against both human breast normal epithelial cells MCF-10A and human breast cancer cells MCF-7.

Chiral ionic liquid-catalyzed Biginelli reaction: stereoselective synthesis of polyfunctionalized perhydropyrimidines

A chiral ionic liquid-catalyzed, efficient and unprecedented version of the Biginelli reaction using new variants of its active methylene component, viz. 2-phenyl-1,3-oxazol-5-one/2-methyl-2-phenyl-1,3-oxathiolan-5-one, with aromatic aldehydes and urea/thiourea enantio- and diastereoselectively, yields 5-amino-/mercaptoperhydropyrimidines. This three-component domino cyclocondensation reaction is effected via ring transformation of an isolable intermediate in a one-pot procedure.     

Ionic liquid [Hmim]HSO4-promoted one-pot oxidative conjugate addition of sulfur-centred nucleophiles to Baylis-Hillman adducts

The first example of the one-pot oxidative conjugate addition of sulfur-centred nucleophiles to Baylis-Hillman adducts is reported. The reaction involves oxidation of Baylis-Hillman adducts with NaNO₃ in the Brønsted acidic ionic liquid [Hmim]HSO₄ to give [E]-α-cyanocinnamaldehydes followed by conjugate hydrothiocyanation/hydrosulfenylation with NH₄SCN/PhSH to afford the corresponding β-thiocyanato (or β-phenylsulfenyl)-α-cyanohydrocinnamaldehydes diastereoselectively in 76-89% yields in a one-pot procedure. After isolation of the product, the ionic liquid [Hmim]HSO₄ could be easily recycled for further use.
