On tolerance lattices of algebras in congruence modular varieties

We prove that the tolerance lattice TolA of an algebra A from a congruence modular variety V is 0-1 modular and satisfies the general disjointness property. If V is congruence distributive, then the lattice Tol A is pseudocomplemented. If V admits a majority term, then Tol A is 0-modular. The Largest Eigenvalue of Rank One Deformation of Large Wigner Matrices

The purpose of this paper is to establish universality of the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue for some non-necessarily Gaussian complex Deformed Wigner Ensembles. The real model is also considered. Our approach is close to the one used by A. Soshnikov (cf. [11]) in the investigations of classical real or complex Wigner Ensembles. It is based on the computation of moments of traces of high powers of the random matrices under consideration.     

Calculation of cyclodextrin-mediated enantiomer ratio shifting of racem norgestrel in aqueous solutions

Enantioselective solubility of rac-norgestrel was found in the presence of γ-cyclodextrin or hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin. In both cases the efficacious enantiomer was dissolved in greater extent. Calculating the molar absorptivity and molar ellipticity spectra of the γ- and hydroxypropyl-γ-cyclodextrin aqueous complexes, a simple and rapid direct circular dichroism (CD) spectrometric method was obtained for the determination of the enantiomer ratio in aqueous solutions.     

Thickness dependence of free‐standing thin films

Below a critical thickness, of about 60 nm, the glass transition temperature of polystyrene (PS) films decreases with film thickness, as demonstrated using free‐standing films. A geometrical model is developed here describing this phenomenon in the case of ideal (Gaussian) chains. This model, which can be considered as an application of the free volume model, assumes that the decrease of the glass transition temperature from thick to ultrathin films is due to the modification of the interpenetration between neighboring chains. The theoretical curve deduced from the model is in excellent agreement with the PS experimental results, without using any adjustable parameters. From these results, it can be concluded that new chain motions, usually buried in bulk samples, are expressed by the presence of the surface. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Difference schemes on uniform grids performed by general discrete operators

Our aim is to set the foundations of a discrete vectorial calculus on uniform n-dimensional grids, that can be easily reformulated on general irregular grids. As a key tool we first introduce the notion of tangent space to any grid node. Then we define the concepts of vector field, field of matrices and inner products on the space of grid functions and on the space of vector fields, mimicking the continuous setting. This allows us to obtain the discrete analogous of the basic first order differential operators, gradient and divergence, whose composition define the fundamental second order difference operator. As an application, we show that all difference schemes, with constant coefficients, for first and second order differential operators with constant coefficients can be seen as difference operators of the form for suitable choices of q, and  . In addition, we characterize special properties of the difference scheme, such as consistency, symmetry and positivity in terms of q, and  .

Rate of Convergence of a Stochastic Particle System for the Smoluchowski Coagulation Equation

By continuing the probabilistic approach of Deaconu et al. (2001), we derive a stochastic particle approximation for the Smoluchowski coagulation equations. A convergence result for this model is obtained. Under quite stringent hypothesis we obtain a central limit theorem associated with our convergence. In spite of these restrictive technical assumptions, the rate of convergence result is interesting because it is the first obtained in this direction and seems to hold numerically under weaker hypothesis. This result answers a question closely connected to the Open Problem 16 formulated by Aldous (1999).     

L'intégration graphique des équations différentielles ordinaires

In the period which precedes the appearance of computers, needs in calculation of the scientists and engineers led to an important development of graphic methods of integration. To contribute to the study of this little known phenomenon, the article presents techniques and instruments used for the graphic integration of ordinary differential equations, and looks for their historic origins by going back to the beginning of calculus: processes of geometric calculation by the polygonal method or the method of radius of curvature, use of tractional motion for the conception of integraphs, reduction to graphic quadratures in finite or infinite number.
