Half‐Sandwich Iridium Complexes Bearing a Diprotic Glyoxime Ligand: Structural Diversity Induced by Reversible Deprotonation

Synthesis and deprotonation reactions of half‐sandwich iridium complexes bearing a vicinal dioxime ligand were studied. Treatment of [{Cp*IrCl(μ‐Cl)}₂] (Cp*=η⁵‐C₅Me₅) with dimethylglyoxime (LH₂) at an Ir:LH₂ ratio of 1:1 afforded the cationic dioxime iridium complex [Cp*IrCl(LH₂)]Cl ( 1 ). The chlorido complex 1 undergoes stepwise and reversible deprotonation with potassium carbonate to give the oxime–oximato complex [Cp*IrCl(LH)] ( 2 ) and the anionic dioximato(2?) complex K[Cp*IrCl(L)] ( 3 ) sequentially. Meanwhile, twofold deprotonation of the sulfato complex [Cp*Ir(SO₄)(LH₂)] ( 4 ) resulted in the formation of the oximato‐bridged dinuclear complex [{Cp*Ir(μ‐L)}₂] ( 5 ). X‐ray analyses disclosed their supramolecular structures with one‐dimensional infinite chain ( 1 and 2 ), hexagonal open channels ( 3 ), and a tetrameric rhomboid ( 4 ) featuring multiple intermolecular hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions.     

An “OFF–ON–OFF” fluorescence protein-labeling probe for real-time visualization of the degradation of short-lived proteins in cellular systems

The ability to monitor proteolytic pathways that remove unwanted and damaged proteins from cells is essential for understanding the multiple processes used to maintain cellular homeostasis. In this study, we have developed a new protein-labeling probe that employs an ‘OFF–ON–OFF’ fluorescence switch to enable real-time imaging of the expression (fluorescence ON) and degradation (fluorescence OFF) of PYP-tagged protein constructs in living cells. Fluorescence switching is modulated by intramolecular contact quenching interactions in the unbound probe (fluorescence OFF) being disrupted upon binding to the PYP-tag protein, which turns fluorescence ON. Quenching is then restored when the PYP-tag–probe complex undergoes proteolytic degradation, which results in fluorescence being turned OFF. Optimization of probe structures and PYP-tag mutants has enabled this fast reacting ‘OFF–ON–OFF’ probe to be used to fluorescently image the expression and degradation of short-lived proteins.

Discotic Liquid Crystals of Transition Metal Complexes, 19: Discotic Mesomorphism and Double Clearing Behavior of Octakis(dialkoxyphenyl)phthalocyanine Derivatives

Eight novel octakis(3,4-dialkoxyphenyl)- phthalocyanine derivatives, Cn-M (2, M=2H; 3, M=Ni; 4, M=Cu; a, decyloxy; b, undecyloxy; c, dodecyloxy), have been synthesized and characterized. It was found that each of the derivatives exhibits discotic liquid crystalline properties, and that each of the Cn–Cu (4) derivatives has two kinds of D_rd2( P 2₁/ a ) mesophases. These Cn–Cu (4a,b,c) and C₁₂–2H (2c) derivatives exhibit a unique double clearing behavior.     

Thermal change of Alq3, tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum(III) studied by TG and XRD-DSC

The thermal change of the tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminum (Alq₃) is currently investigated by XRD-DSC and TG. The phase transition of Alq₃ from α-phase to γ-phase takes place at 643–669 K. A very sharp peak with the peak temperature at approx. 709 K is ascribed to the melting of the Alq₃. The decomposition of the Alq₃ was observed accompanied with the melting and evaporation at >703K. The effect of the atmospheres on the mass loss procedure was studied by TG. It was found that thermal process of Alq₃ was strongly influenced by the partial pressure of water vapor in the atmosphere instead of oxygen.

Iron(III)-catalyzed hydroarylation of propiolic acid with activated arenes

FeCl₃/AgOTf-catalyzed hydroarylation of propiolic acid with electron-rich arenes such as mesitylene, tetramethylbenzene, and pentamethylbenzene in trifluoroacetic acid proceeded to give 3-arylpropenoic acids in moderate to high yields. The same reactions with anisole and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene afforded double hydroarylation products, 3,3-diarylpropionic acids.     

Convenient green preparation of dipeptides using unprotected α-amino acids

Dipeptides and amides were obtained in high yields from N-carbobenzyloxy α-amino acids and 3-phenylpropanoic acid with unprotected α-amino acids via the corresponding mixed carbonic carboxylic anhydrides using ethyl chloroformate and triethylamine by an ecological and convenient method in which the protection of C-terminals is not needed.
