Solution of large configuration mixing matrices arising in partitioning technique and applications to the generalized eigenvalue problem

A method is presented that can be used (a) to determine the several lowest eigenvalues and eigenvectors of large symmetric matrices, (b) to solve the generalized eigenvalue problem associated with energy-dependent operators, that arises in computations involving energy-dependent many-body Green's functions and in the evaluation of the true parameters of the effective valence shell hamiltonian, and (c) to directly evaluate the matrices associated with resolvent operators. The applicability to large configuration mixing calculations arises when the N-electron basis functions can be easily broken down to a few dominant configurations (the primary block) and their complement. Using the partitioning technique, the effective hamiltonian within the primary block is directly evaluated. The method is extended to evaluation of the dynamical polarizability tensor, which effectively contains the contributions from all of the eigenstates of a hamiltonian matrix, without the necessity of explicitly calculating its eigenvalues and eigenvectors.     

Photocrosslinkable polyesters with conjugated double bonds: Reciprocity effect in laser recording

The reciprocity effect under intense illumination was studied with photocrosslinkable polyesters of p-phenylenebis(α-cyanobutadiene carboxylic acid) (I), m-phenylenebis(α-cyanobutadiene carboxylic acid) (II), and p-phenylenebis(acrylic acid) (III), with an argon ion laser as a light source. The reciprocal sensitivities of I, II, and III were 5.0, 1800, and > 10⁵ mJ/cm², respectively. II and III required sensitization to enhance their sensitivities to a level at which reciprocity effects could be measured. I obeyed the reciprocity law over a wide range of exposure times from seconds to microseconds. Both II′, a copolyester of II, and III showed a dramatic decrease of sensitivity in high-intensity/short-time exposure when sensitized by 9,10-phenanthraquinone and pyrylium salts.     

Substoichiometric isotope-dilution determination of sulphur after conversion to methylene blue and ion-pair extraction with dodecyl sulphate

The proposed substoichiometric determination of sulphur includes two key steps: conversion of sulphur to methylene blue and ion-pair extraction of methylene blue into chloroform with a substoichiometric amount of dodecyl sulphate. The method, combined with isotope dilution is applied to the determination of total sulphur in NBS SRM Citrus Leaves and in a seaweed sample (Laminaria religiosa Miyabe). The mean values obtained were 0.401±0.008% S (RSD 2%; n=9; certified value 0.407±0.009%) for the SRM, and 0.756±0.012% S (RSD 1.6%; n=5) for the seaweed. A sample of 0.5–1 g containing ca. 100 μg of sulphur can be analysed.     

Electropherograms in capillary zone electrophoresis plotted as a function of the quantity of electric charge

We have plotted electropherograms in capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) as a function of the quantity of electric charge (Q) in order to eliminate the dependency of the analyte peak areas, as well as that of the migration times, upon both the capillary temperature and the applied voltage. The procedure is based on an idea of a migration index (MI) and an adjusted migration index (AMI) which were originally proposed by Lee and Yeung. The value of Q is measured accurately and calculated easily because it is given by a product of the electrophoretic current and the migration times, where the index MI is derived by dividing the value of Q by the effective volume of the capillary. By calculating the CZE peak area from the newly plotted electropherogram, improvement in precision in quantitative analysis is expected. Concerning AMI, careful treatment is required in its application to analyte peaks whose migration time is close to that of the neutral marker. Experimental data and discussions concerning the migration indices are presented.     

Synthetic studies on selective type 4 phosphodiesterase (PDE 4) inhibitors. 1. Structure-activity relationships and pharmacological evaluation of 1,8-naphthyridin-2(1H)-one derivatives

In order to develop novel and orally active phosphodiesterase (PDE) 4 inhibitors, random screening was performed using our chemical library to find YM-10335 possessing the 1,8-naphthyridin-2(1H)-one skeleton which is a completely different structure from rolipram. In this report, the syntheses and structure-activity relationships of the YM-10335 derivatives were described. Some compounds showed selective inhibitory activities for PDE 4 derived from human peripheral blood cells and no effect on the other PDE types (1, 2, 3, 5). The inhibition of the tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) release in vitro and the carrageenan-induced pleurisy in rats were also described.     

Ionic salt permeabilities and membrane potentials of asymmetric polypeptide membrane

Asymmetric membrane potentials and transport properties of polypeptide membrane consisting of two layers with poly(L-glutamic acid) and poly (γ-methylL-glutamate) were studied in the pH range of 2 to 6 at 25 °C. Under the condition adopted, the poly (L-glutamic acid) layer of the membrane underwentα helix to coil transition which was confirmed by ATR-IR measurements. The membrane potentials of the asymmetric membrane between two identical solutions of KCl,Δψ _asym, which is called asymmetric potential, were observed.Δψ _asym values were effected by the structural transition of poly (L-glutamic acid) layer. As a result, the effective charge density of the membrane, which was derived by the asymmetric membrane potential measurements, had a maximum at the transition region of pH=4.8. On the other hand, the permeation coefficient of KCl,P _i, was higher in the direction from poly (L-glutamic acid) side to poly (γ-methylL-glutamate) side, “G →M direction”, than in the oppositeM →G direction. Furthermore,P _i inG →M direction was dependent on the solution pH, that is,P _i decreased when pH was increased to 4.8 and increased on further increasing of pH These membrane behaviors were described in terms of the competition between structural transition and variation of fixed charge density owing to the helix to coil transition of the asymmetric polypeptide membrane.     

Studies on penem and carbapenem. I. Syntheses and oral absorption of ester-type prodrugs of sodium (5R,6S)-2-(2-fluoroethylthio)-6-[(1R)-1-hydroxyethyl]penem-3-c arboxylat e

Acyloxyalkyl esters (2a-d), alkyloxycarbonyloxyalkyl esters (2e-g) and (5-methyl-2-oxo-1,3-dioxol-4-yl)methyl ester (2h) of (5R,6S)-2-(2-fluoroethylthio)-6-[(1R)-1-hydroxyethyl]penem-3- carboxylic acid (1) were synthesized. Enhanced oral absorption was observed in mice reflecting increased lipophilicity, compared with the parent 1 itself. Among them, the ester 2h showed a prolonged plasma level and a large area under the blood concentration-time curve (AUC) in rats. These ester-type prodrugs of penem 1 in phosphate buffer (pH 6.86) were much more stable than those of cephalosporins which easily degraded via isomerization to delta 2 cephalosporins.     

Total synthesis of (+/-)-stemodinone via an efficient ring-exchange strategy

A total synthesis of (+/-)-stemodinone, a tetracyclic stemodane diterpene, from the known tricyclic methyl olefin 11 is described. The key steps involve an efficient ring-exchange reaction and palladium(0)-catalyzed lactone migration. The ring-exchange strategy for controlling the stereochemistry was based on an initial Diels-Alder reaction to form a new ring followed by cleavage of the original ring. Cleavage of the original ring of the Diels-Alder adduct 9 was achieved by an initial regio- and chemoselective Baeyer-Villiger oxidation followed by the Pd(0)-catalyzed lactone-migration reaction reported by us.     

A study of the production of high-p t π0 at the CERN intersecting storage rings

The inclusive cross-section for π⁰ production near 90° inpp collisions at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings has been studied for thep _T range 3<p _T <16GeV/c at four different centre-of-mass energies ( \(\sqrt s = 30.6\) , 44.8, 52.7, and 62.8 GeV). In this experiment the two photons from the π⁰→yy decay were resolved and measured separately forp _T values up to 10 GeV/c. Results indicate an agreement with thep _T ^?8 behaviour for the lower values ofp _T and a slower decrease of the cross-section for the higher values ofp _T . The high-p _T data deviate from the scaling expressionp _T ^?n F(x _T ), which holds for the lowerp _T values (p _T <8GeV/c).
