New Preparation of Cyclic Acyloxyphosphorane by Reaction of Glyoxylic Acid with Phosphorus(III) Compounds

We have recently found that the reaction of α-keto acids (1) with phosphorus (III) compounds (3) yielded cyclic acyloxyphosphoranes(C-AOPs, 4), a new class of pentacovalent phosphorus species having a P-OC(O) group.^{1, 2)} The present paper deals with a new reaction of glyoxylic acid (2) with 3 to give C-AOPs (5) having no substituent at the C-3 position. 1 is an α-keto acid whereas 2 can be taken as an α-formyl acid. Although it is well known in the field of organic chemistry that the formyl group often behaves differently from a keto group, the reaction of 2 with 3 provides an example in which both groups behave in a similar manner.     

Photoswitchable organocatalysis in acylation of alcohol using dithienylethene-linked azoles

Three novel dithienylethenes bearing azole derivatives were synthesized and found to undergo reversible photocyclization of the dithienylethene units upon alternate irradiation with UV and visible light. Among them, the dithienylethene-linked imidazole and N-phenylimidazole exhibited a relatively high organocatalytic activity for the acylation of 2-decanol with acetic anhydride, and the catalytic activity of the dithienylethene-linked imidazole could be switched by reversible photoinduced cyclization/cycloreversion of the dithienylethene unit.     

X-ray characterisation of local molecular orientation in the electroclinic effect of surface-stabilised SmA liquid crystals

The local molecular orientation in the electroclinic effect of the chiral smectic A phase in a surface-stabilised cell has been determined using a time-resolved synchrotron X-ray microbeam diffraction technique. Space- and time-resolved X-ray wide-angle halo scattering under an electric field reveals the static and dynamic intralayer molecular orientation. The molecular orientation varies spatially in accordance with the stripe texture and is dependent on the applied voltage. It has been found that the deviation of the molecular orientation from the rubbing direction depends strongly on the sample history. The relation between the apparent molecular orientation and the layer structure is discussed.     

Synthesis of 8-Methoxycarbonyloctylβ-Glycosides of Tri-and Tetrasaccharides Related to Schizophyllan and Neoglycoproteins Therefrom

Abstract

The 8-methoxycarbonyloctyl β-glycosides of the trisaccharides O-β-d-Glcp-(1 → 6)- O-β-d-Glcp-(1 → 3)-d-Glcp and O-β-d-Glcp-(1 → 3)-O-[β-d -Glcp-(1 → 6)]-d-Glcp and of the tetrasaccharide O-β-d-Glcp-(1 → 3)-O-[β-d-Glcp-(1 → 6)]-O-β-d-Glcp-(1 → 3)-d-Glcp, corresponding to the fragments of schizophyllan, have been synthesized by using mono- to tetrasaccharide 1-thioglycosides as glycosyl donors, each bearing a participating benzoyl group in the 2-position, and N-iodosuccinimide and silver triflate as promoter. Saponification of the tri- and tetrasaccharide β-glycosides, followed by attachment to bovine serum albumin of the resulting sugar derivatives having a carboxyl group at the aglycon terminal, provided neoglycoproteins for immunological studies of the polysaccharide.     

Copper-mediated oxidative tandem reactions with molecular oxygen: synthesis of 2-arylbenzoxazinone derivatives from indoles

We developed an efficient method for the transformation of indoles by utilizing a copper catalyst and molecular oxygen as the oxidant. The transformation involves a tandem oxidative process of 2-arylindoles. Our reaction afforded a variety of N-benzoyl anthranilic acids and benzoxazinones. Our investigation revealed that the choice of solvent and additives is critical in these reactions.     

Topography and field effects in the inner side of microvia hole using ToF‐SIMS

We have developed a simple and powerful method, which is called ‘angled sample holder method’, to characterize a topographic structured sample such as microsized via hole of ball grid array using time‐of‐flight SIMS. The diameter of via holes was 100 µm and the depth was 70 µm. To remove the shaded area by incidence primary ion beam and to extract secondary ions from the bottom of a via hole, several types of angled sample holders with compensation steering plate were applied on the basis of simulation results using SIMION code. And the analyses using angled sample holder method enabled us to characterize the bottom and side wall of a via hole in clear. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Investigation of the biosynthesis of acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetic acid from pyruvic acid and the quantitative evaluation of incorporated 13C-labeled l-alanine in Arthrobacter hyalinus

Studies on the contribution to acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetic acid from the pyruvic acid transformation from l-alanine in Arthrobacter hyalinus were conducted by means of feeding experiments with l-[1-¹³C]alanine and l-[3-¹³C]alanine, followed by an analysis of the labeling patterns of coproporphyrinogen III using ¹³C NMR spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that l-alanine was transformed via pyruvic acid to both acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetic acid. Additionally, the quantitative analysis indicated that pyruvic acid was transformed to acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetic acid in the ratio of 1:0.8.     

Enhanced collective optical response of vast numbers of silver nanoparticles assembled on a microbead

We investigated the optical response of a huge number of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) densely assembled on an organic microsphere, i.e., AgNP-fixed bead, under the collective phenomena of localized surface plasmons. For this purpose, various optical properties of such a AgNP-fixed bead were analyzed in aqueous solution by dark-field optical microscopy and laser Raman microscopy. In particular, in comparison with the optical spectrum of single AgNPs, significant spectral broadening and redshift were observed due to plasmonic superradiance with decreasing interparticle distance to the subnanoscale when using small binder molecules in the AgNP-fixed bead. Furthermore, we observed surface-enhanced Raman scattering and clarified the sensitivity of the signal intensity to the size of the binder molecules between the AgNPs, which can be explained based on optical response theory using a discrete integral with spherical cells. These results and discussion provide a guiding principle for broadband plasmonic light absorbers and for highly sensitive detection of small molecules and nanoscale biomaterials based on vast numbers of nanogaps produced by a bottom-up self-assembly process.
